Float participation in the parade is to help the youth achieve responsibility.
Festivities for the 65th Annual
Temple City Camellia Festival
will take place on Feb. 20,
21 & 22. The theme for this
year’s event is “Backyard Adventures,”
submitted by Matthew
Keelin, a student at
Longden Elementary School.
The General Chairperson for
this year’s event is Ann Seitz.
The purpose of the festival
has always been to encourage
every young person in the community
to belong to a recognized
youth organization and to
participate in the affairs of their
City. Float participation in the
parade is to help the youth
achieve responsibility. Young
people are encouraged by their
adult supervisors to apply
themselves by designing, building,
and decorating a float.
Groups are able to submit their
float title selection to the Ca-
mellia Festival office which are
taken on a first-come-firstserve
basis. During February,
youth groups search for homes
in the area looking for camellias
and ask those residents if
they will save the flowers for
their group.
The parade, at 10 a.m. Saturday,
Feb. 21 will cover a mile
and a half route that moves participants
down Las Tunas Drive
starting at Sultana Avenue and
finishes up at Rowland Avenue.
Floats will be on display in
Temple City Park until 9 p.m.
Saturday.
The three-day event includes
a carnival and talent show in
Temple City Park food and
game booths and a variety of
carnival rides for the entire
family. Carnival ride pre-sale
tickets are on sale at City Hall
until Feb. 19, at 20 tickets for
Feb. 20, from 4 p.m. to 10
p.m., Saturday after the parade
until 10 p.m. and Sunday from
12 noon to 8 p.m.
The Camellia Festival started
in 1944 with a contest held by
the Woman’s Club of Temple
City that brought forth a slogan,
“Temple City, Home of
Camellias.” Starting with a
handful of youngsters the first
year, who tossed Camellia blossoms
to the viewers along Las
Tunas Drive, the parade has
grown in size and significance.
Temple City is now to the point
that it is preparing to welcome
more that 5,000 children in its
parade and to greet more than
20,000 visitors to the city.
