<strong>TCUSD</strong> Welcomes Back Staff<br />

<strong>TCUSD</strong> held its annual welcome back breakfast for all District staff on<br />

Wednesday, September 3, at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>City</strong> High School. Board Members<br />

Rachel LaSota, Janet Rhee, Bob Ridley, Matt Smith, Joe Walker and<br />

Superintendent Chelsea Kang-Smith cooked and served pancakes to staff<br />

members. After <strong>the</strong> breakfast, everyone ga<strong>the</strong>red in <strong>the</strong> TCHS gym to<br />

kick <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> school year and recognized employees reaching milestones in<br />

years <strong>of</strong> service to <strong>the</strong> District.<br />

Sunrise Community Church<br />

in <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>City</strong> is announcing<br />

fall events for <strong>the</strong> community<br />

at large. Whe<strong>the</strong>r you are looking<br />

for family friendly events or<br />

smaller groups that <strong>of</strong>fer personal<br />

times for fellowship and<br />

study, Sunrise has an activity<br />

this fall for you and wants to<br />

invite you.<br />

On Tuesday nights, Sunrise’s<br />

mid-week Bible study resumes<br />

with Pastor Andrew Kikkert.<br />

The group is currently studying<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> Luke and all are<br />

welcome to pull up a chair<br />

around <strong>the</strong> table to discuss what<br />

insights <strong>the</strong> Bible has in lives<br />

and how this can give hope in<br />

such a confusing world.<br />

a new women’s Bible study<br />

study is open to anyone in <strong>the</strong><br />

church background or affiliation.<br />

Sunrise Community Church<br />

is also continuing Game Nights<br />

are on <strong>the</strong> first and third Friday<br />

<strong>of</strong> every month from 7 to 10<br />

p.m. There is no charge if you<br />

are looking for a night out, but<br />

donations for food and beverages<br />

are always welcome. The<br />

<strong>the</strong>me for Friday, Oct. 3 will be<br />

baseball as we enjoy both <strong>the</strong><br />

Dodgers and <strong>the</strong> Angels play<strong>of</strong>f<br />

runs.<br />

deeper sense <strong>of</strong> fellowship, Sun-<br />

Knights <strong>of</strong> Columbus sponsors<br />

Tootsie-Roll fundraiser, Oct. 17-19<br />

The Knights <strong>of</strong> Columbus Council #9128 <strong>of</strong> St. Luke’s Catholic<br />

Church will be having an Annual fundraiser for <strong>the</strong> Marian Home<br />

for <strong>the</strong> developmentally disabled on Oct. 17, 18, and 19. This event<br />

will take place in front <strong>of</strong> Ralphs Market and Rite Aid Drugstore at<br />

Cloverly Street and Las Tunas Drive. They will wear <strong>the</strong>ir yellow<br />

vests and ask for donations, giving giant Tootsie-Rolls as a “thank<br />

you” to <strong>the</strong> donors. The Knights have a goal <strong>of</strong> raising $5,000.<br />

Marian Homes was initiated in February <strong>of</strong> 1986, after a group<br />

<strong>of</strong> parents ga<strong>the</strong>red to discuss <strong>the</strong> welfare <strong>of</strong> young adults with disabilities<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir welfare when parents were no longer able to provide<br />

for <strong>the</strong>m. Out <strong>of</strong> this meeting and many o<strong>the</strong>rs that followed a<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>it corporation was formed in 1987.<br />

Their goal is to provide a permanent residence to young adults<br />

within <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> a “home like” atmosphere. Marian Homes<br />

serves all <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn California. There are no geographic limits to<br />

serving <strong>the</strong>ir residents.<br />

All young adults work outside <strong>the</strong> home in <strong>the</strong> local community<br />

or in educational or vocational training settings. Several young<br />

adults have jobs working at local restaurants, schools, and day care<br />

centers.<br />

The homes are staffed by a full-time house administrator who<br />

lives at <strong>the</strong> home during <strong>the</strong> week. On weekends, <strong>the</strong>re are live-in<br />

relief staff members. A full-time program director oversees <strong>the</strong> staff<br />

and <strong>the</strong> activities at <strong>the</strong> home.<br />
