West Coast Shotokan Karate Association Celebrates 40 years
Temple City’s West Coast Shotokan Karate Association,
which was founded by the late Edwin Hamille in
1968, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with a
weeklong celebration beginning Monday, Oct. 13 and
concluding with a banquet at the Duarte Elks Club on
Saturday, Oct. 18.
Currently the school is owned and managed by Ed
Shanick, a 4th degree black belt. Ed is a graduate of
Temple City High School, Class of 1960. He started with
Hamile in 1970 and was joined in the years that followed
by current senior staff. They are Chief Instructor
Sensei David Hurlbut (7th degree black belt); Assistant
Chief Instructor Sensei Randy Tyrell (6th degree
black belt); Sensei Will Adams (5th degree belt);
and Senseis Tony Duran and Theresa Duenas (both 4th
degree black belts).
The staff shares a rich tradition established by
Hamile, who was a student of Masters Hirokazu
Kanazawa, Tetsuhiko Asai, who served as chairman of
the Japan Karate Association, and Masataka Mori.
Kanazawa has been described as the finest martial artist
of the 20th Century and Asai has been labeled as
probably having “no equal” as a martial artist.
Hamile started karate in Hawaii as a 34-year-old,
hoping to gain skills in self-defense and anger management.
Already a well-rounded sportsman, he surfed, iceskated,
played tennis, rode horseback and piloted private
planes.
Shihan Edwin Hamile was first non-Japanese recipient
of the Japan Karate Association’s coveted Gichen
Funakoshi Award.
Business Spotlight
Hamile was a radio announcer and
disc jockey for radio station KIKI,
Honolulu as well as a bandleader in
the French Quarter in Hawaii ——
the first musician to bring jazz sessions
to Hawaii.
In the same year he began karate,
Hamile married Manon Sumiko
Smith, an entertainer who specialized
in Japanese songs. The following year
she was awarded the first—“Mrs.
Hawaii” title.
After moving to Southern California,
Hamile taught karate in little
Tokyo, while bartending in
Chinatown. One of his karate students,
ex-professional boxer Alberto
Ayala sought a building where
Hamile could have his own school.
Ayala found a vacant bakery at
9506 Las Tunas Dr. and in October,
1968 a karate dojo opened there under
the newly-formed West Coast
Shotokan Karate Association.
Shanick recalls the days the building
was a bakery. He claims to have
taken his younger brothers and sisters
on soda pop bottle collecting excursions
to exchange bottles for small
cash to buy some of its delicious donuts.
As a “French, Filipino, Portuguese, Chinese,” Hamile
was one of the Asian pioneers of the modern Temple
City business community. He was a Temple City resident
and served extensively as a board member at the
Temple City Chamber of Commerce.
In his later years, Edwin maintained a mobile home
residence in the desert community of Boron, California,
where son Steven Hamile would occasionally land
his helicopter on the front lawn to say a quick hello.
Like his dad, pilot Steven distinguished himself in karate
by becoming one of the youngest brown belts in
America back in the 1960s.
His students enthusiastically carry on Hamile’s
legacy. This new generation of leaders is strongly committed
to “Ohana,” the Hawaiian idea that all involved
in the dojo ——students, parents, other family and
friends ——are part of an “extended family.”
WCSKA’s website is karate1.ws. The 40th anniversary
banquet Web site is on duarteelks.org. The school
may be reached by phone at 626-285-8887.
Toby Palmquist, now a resident of the state of Georgia,
will be returning for the festive occasion where he
will be one of the distinguished guests, having been
the group’s first instructor to be designated “Sensei,” a
title reserved for those achieving third degree black belt
and higher who have proven their skills as a teacher.
He is now a 4th degree black belt.
Richard Huddleston, the school’s first student to
achieve black belt, is expected to be on hand Joining
these early students at the dojo located at 9506 Las Tunas
Dr. will be a contingent of prominent international
The late Edwin Hamile (far right), founder of West Coast Shotokan Karate Association, is
visited by Kung-Fu expert and film star Eric Lee (far left) and “father” of American Karate, Ed
Parker (center). Parker also known as Elvis Presley’s personal instructor was a frequent visitor
to the Temple City Dojo. Hamile and Parker were lifelong friends from Hawaii prior to their
passing in the 1990s.
belts promoted through the years.
Grandmaster “Lucky” Luciano of the Kajukempo
Self-Defense System is one of these instructors who will
conduct a seminar during the anniversary week. He
travels from San Diego and was a lifelong friend of
Shihan (Master) Edwin Hamile, who founded WCSKA.
Both were natives of Hawaii. Hamile passed away in
June 1999 at the age of 75, a 9th degree black belt.
In from Hawaii, Shihan George Sasano will be offering
2 seminars. He was Hamile’s senior in the highly
acclaimed Karate Association of Hawaii. During
Hamile’s reign as President of KAH, Sasano’s sparring
competition team became the first non-Japanese to beat
Tokyo’s team in World Championships.
A possible guest is international chief instructor of
West Coast Shotokan Karate Association, Shihan Shalom
Avitan, of Haifa, Israel. Avitan is the leading martial
arts figure in that country, where he maintains approximately
50 schools with more than 4,000 students.
WCSKA international has spread from Temple City to
about 40 countries.
Holland’s visiting group will probably be the largest
and is led by Chief Instructor Sensei Andre Kila, a 5th
degree black belt. Two of his students will be taking a
special black belt examination during the day on Oct.
18.
Belgium’s Chief Instructor, Sensei Ludo Bellemans,
an eighth degree black belt, has been a visitor to prior
anniversary events, and is a likely guest. Mexico Sensei
Jose Linares of Ensenada (6th degree black belt) is expected
to be in attendance.
Locally, Camarillo Chief Instructor, Sensei Victor
Young (8th degree black belt) who was a member of
Karate Association of Hawaii and close friend of Hamile,
will add to the list of notables. Sensei Mike Whiteside
(5th degree black belt) of Ontario will be present. Along
with Palmquist and Huddleston he was one of the pioneers
of the dojo and was in class the first week it
opened.
City Hall News
Upgrading city’s general plan; planning for next 20 years
By Charlie Martin
City Manager, Temple City
The Council recently undertook
study of the first of the
three Task Force and Planning
Commission’s recommendations
concerning the upgrading
of the city’s General Plan, and
devising a “plan” for the next 20
years.
The first subject is related to
the mandated affordable housing
in the city with a secondary
issue of achieving and completing
the Housing Element to be
incorporated into the General
Plan. The state has mandated
that Temple City provide zoning
for an additional 978 housing
units within the city. The
mandate doesn’t say that the
978 units must be built, but
does say that the zoning for
them must be provided not
later than 2014 in such manner
as to permit the development
with no administrative hurdles.
Of the mandated 978 new
units, almost half of them
would have to be “affordable”
– meaning they must be available
to buyers with low income.
“Low” is not well defined, but
as a rule of thumb, it amounts
to about $25,000 per year of
income, for each occupant of
the housing unit – for two,
about $50,000 per year of income,
of which not more than
30% may be spent on housing
(i.e. about $1,200 per month
for rent or mortgage plus taxes,
utilities, and insurance).
The 978 new housing units
would be pretty close to a ten
percent increase in total hous-
Temple City’s City Hall and Civic Center are
now operating on a four-day work week. office
hours are Monday through Thursday, from 7:30
a.m. until 6 p.m. and closed Fridays.
Live Oak Park Community Center operating
hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m.
until 10 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, from
ing units presently in the city,
and (if built) would have an
impact on traffic, parking,
sewer capacity, drainage facilities,
schools, city government
and the number of employees,
as well as many factors of city
life. Yet, it must be done unless
the law is changed or court action
invalidates the state mandate.
The present law provides for
the “possibility” of draconian
sanctions for failure to meet the
mandated goals. So far, the California
Department of Housing
and Community Development
has pressured, but has not yet
actually levied any substantial
fines or penalties.
There are several collateral
issues that were discussed, but
without decision thus far:
(1) Would it be better to concentrate
the 978 units (or at
least the affordable ones) in one
or two places in town, or disperse
them as much as possible
throughout the whole community
(inclusionary zoning) – so
as to lessen the breath of the
impact city-wide?
(2) How many stories is the
city willing to have built (depending
on the location) when
as many as six stories might accomplish
the goal by itself?
(3) Does the city want mixed
use (living quarters over stores
and industrial complexes)
along Rosemead Blvd. and Las
Tunas Drive, or in all commercial
and industrial zones?
(4) Does the city want to
subsidize the rent for some of
the units?
In the coming weeks, the
Planning Commission’s recommendations
regarding increasing
sale tax revenue in the commercial
zones, stopping the
drain of retail businesses, and
increasing the sales ambience
will be reviewed by the City
Council.
After that, the City Council
will review the recommendations
relating to new parks and
recreation – including the concept
of requiring major developers
to donate funds or property
for pocket parks.
Then the City Council will
make decisions on all three
study areas (housing, commercial,
and parks) with another
hearing and adoption of the
necessary resolutions and ordinances.
New office hours at City Hall, Civic Center
The new office of Social Security
has relocated and is now
open for business at 9351
Telstar Ave., El Monte.
The office is located south of
the Interstate-10 freeway. Exit
south at Rosemead Boulevard
and turn east on Telstar Avenue.
Continue to the northwest corner
of Telstar and Rio Hondo
Avenue. Public transportation
is available by transferring to
8:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.
The new office hours for City Hall and the
Civic Center have provided residents additional
time to conduct business before heading off to
work and after arriving home.
The city benefits with an energy cost savings
for city building and vehicles.
Keelin, a student at
Longden Elementary School.
The General Chairperson for
this year’s event is Ann Seitz.
The purpose of the festival
has always been to encourage
every young person in the community
to belong to a recognized
youth organization and to
participate in the affairs of their
City. Float participation in the
people are encouraged by their
adult supervisors to apply
themselves by designing, building,
and decorating a float.
Groups are able to submit their
float title selection to the Ca-
youth groups search for homes
in the area looking for camellias
and ask those residents if
they will save the flowers for
their group.
The parade, at 10 a.m. Saturday,
Comfortable lodging available in nearby Rosemead
By Tommy Low, Farmers
Insurance Agent
For baby boomers planning
their retirement, life insurance
is a very significant issue.
Whether to create an estate, save
money or help loved ones after
death, life insurance is important.
Life Insurance creates an estate
to help compensate for the
death of the primary wage
earner that will usually stop the
flow of income to a family. Also
financially devastating can be
the death of a nonworking
spouse who cares for minor
children. Planning for survivor
Comfort Suites Rosemead, 9488 Valley Blvd., Rosemead, opened for business in 2007.
The necessity of life insurance
protection requires careful examination
of current assets and
liabilities as well as determining
what survivors’ needs maybe.
A person may create an estate
through earnings, savings
and investments over a period
of time. However, all of these
methods require disciplined
action. If time is not available,
they may all fail.
The purchase of life insurance,
in the event of death, creates
an immediate estate. Estate
creation is especially important
for young families what are getting
started and have not yet
had time to accumulate assets.
Tommy Low, insurance agent.
When an insured person purchases
a life insurance policy, he
or she will have an estate of at
least that amount the moment
the first premium is paid.
There is no other legal
method whereby an immediate
estate can be created at such a
small cost. Life insurance proceeds
may be used to accumulate
specific amounts of funds
for specific needs and guarantees
that a specific amount will
be available when needed.
One of the essential differences
between life insurance
and other types of insurance is
that life insurance also performs
the function of accumulation.
A permanent life insurance
will have loan or surrender
values that the policy owner
may access.
In the event the insured dies,
the beneficiary will be provided
with the immediate cash necessary
to pay expenses associated
with death.
Life insurance proceeds may
be used to pay state inheritance
taxes and federal estate taxes so
that it is not necessary to sell off
assets from the estate to pay
these costs.
Boosting Immunity —
Taking care of oneself is
a full-time occupation
By Sheila Yonemoto, P.T.
When I first started practicing as a
physical therapist, most of my patients
wanted a quick fix that didn’t require
much work.
Today, they may come in with a particular
condition hindering their functioning,
but in fact, they actually want
to improve their overall health and prevent
further deterioration of their bodies.
No longer satisfied with taking medications
to merely make them “feel better,”
they actually wish to improve to the
point where they no longer need medications
and can actually fight off future
illnesses.
We all know diet, exercise and mental
states affect health, and everyone
knows positive changes in lifestyles and
habits improve health. We understand
how taking control of our health habits
now will help keep us out of hospitals
later.
Most people include fresh fruits and
vegetables in their diet and restrict red
meat intake. Processed foods and depleted
soils make foods less nutritious
than 50 years ago, so adding supplements
may also boost an individual’s health.
Daily exercise, however, remains
problematic for the majority, even
though we know we should do it. Once
a person has experienced an injury, however,
he is more likely to develop the exercise
habit.
Changing and managing stress levels
may seem difficult at first, but once stress
factors are recognized, most people can
take steps to reduce stress in their lives.
One way you can both reduce stress and
boost your immune system is looking for
things that make you smile and feel
happy. Studies show happier people are
healthier.
Norman Cousins cured himself from
an incurable disease using laughter while
watching funny movies. Many relaxation
techniques calm the nervous system and
stimulate your body’s healing capabilities.
Deep diaphragmatic breathing or taking
a pleasant walk around the neighborhood
admiring the flowers and trees can
activate your own self-healing. When the
body is relaxed, more oxygen gets to vari-
Jerry and Pat Jambazian
Sheila Yonemoto, P.T.
ous parts of the body, thus increasing the
body’s nutrition supply.
As a physical therapist, some of the
techniques I use help boost the immune
system as do some osteopathic and acupuncture/acupressure
techniques. As a
qigong (Chinese energetic exercise) instructor,
I teach specific exercise forms
to boost the immune system.
In Chinese medical theory, the body’s
energy manufacturing centers are influenced
using certain movements, improving
the body’s ability to fend off disease.
Taking care of ones’ self is a full-time
occupation. You can start by simply sitting
down, taking a few deep breaths and
relaxing your body.
Sit quietly for a few minutes, and begin
noticing surrounding sounds, smells,
sights and sensations. Try relaxing your
body further concentrating on a very
happy thought. Smile and enjoy the feelings.
Then think about being healthy and
active.
Reorient yourself to the environment
and see if things appear differently. Try
doing this for two weeks and see if it
makes a difference in how you feel or act.
If it makes you feel better, pass the word
on to a friend.
therapist for over 27 years, specializing
a holistic approach. She can be reached
Protect Marriage Amendment (Proposition 8) deserves passage
I would never, ever, endorse a candidate from the
pulpit. Not only is it illegal, more important is the fact
that’s it’s wrong — it’s an abuse of the pulpit. It detracts
from the church’s central mission,
which is to present Jesus
Christ.
However I would, and now
do, tell you how strongly I feel
about the Protect Marriage
Amendment (Proposition 8),
which you will have a chance
to vote on in November. The
same day America selects a
new President, California will
decide what to do about the
Dr. Glenn Layne
future of marriage in California. And make no mistake:
what California does will shape what happens all across
America.
That is why I intend to vote for Prop 8 on November
4. You will have to decide how you will vote. But this is
how I’m voting, and I want to explain why.
First, I am voting this way because how I vote must
be informed by my faith. In a democracy, God holds
me and you accountable for my part in the decisions
made in my country. Here are some Biblical realities,
which inform the way I am voting:
• God intentionally designed and created us male and
female. (Gen. 1:27; Gen. 5:1-2; Matt. 19:4; Mark 10:6)
• God intended sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only
within the context of the male and female relationship.
(Gen. 1:28; Matt. 19:5, Mark 10:7-8; Romans 1:24-32)
• God intends marriage to be a committed, life-long,
covenant relationship between a man and a woman
based on love, respect, mutual submission and personal
...how I vote must be
informed by my faith.
In fact, heterosexual marriage
is found in nearly every
human society and almost
always as a pivotal institution.
sacrifice. (Matt. 5:31-32; Matt. 19:3-11; Mal. 2:14-16;
Mark 10:2-12; I Cor. 7:10-16; Deut. 5:18, 21; Eph. 5:21-
• Jesus confirmed that God’s design is only to be fulfilled
within the context of a committed marriage of
one man and one woman. (Matt. 19:3-11; Mark 10:2-
12).
• Children are a blessing. God’s design is that moms
and dads create and raise children. (Gen. 1:28; Psalm
127:3-5; Proverbs 22:6)
• God’s design is to have dad and mom train their
children to love, honor and obey God. (Deut. 4:1-9;
Proverbs 22:6)
• All sexual activity outside of God’s design (marriage)
is forbidden’— it is morally impure and personally
• There is tremendous safety and blessing in following
God’s plan for marriage. (Deut. 5:10; Exodus 20:6;
Deut. 4:1-9; Romans 2:5-10)
Second, I am voting for the PMA because of the need
to preserve marriage’s stabilizing role in society.
In all or nearly all human societies, marriage is the
socially approved union between a woman and a man,
conceived both as a personal relationship and as an institution,
so that any children resulting from the union
are understood to be emotionally, morally, practically
and legally affiliated with both of the parents.
The history of marriage demonstrates that non-recognition
of same-sex “marriages” does not stem from a
particular religious tradition; it is universal. Even secular
and aggressively atheist regimes (like the old Soviet
Union) have never recognized same-sex “marriages.”
In fact, heterosexual marriage is found in nearly every
human society and almost always as a pivotal institution.
Homosexual marriage outside contemporary
Western societies is exceedingly rare and has never been
considered the equivalent of male/female marriage,
even in societies that had a”“tolerant” attitude toward
homosexuality (like ancient Greece).
Marriage (real, God-designed heterosexual marriage)
is good for men, for women and for children.
Marriage is good financially, from a health standpoint
and from mental health standpoint.
Research clearly demonstrates that family structure
matters for children, and the family structure that helps
the most is a family headed by two-biological parents
in a low-conflict marriage.
On the other hand, nations in Europe that have experimented
with same-sex marriage discover that such
so-called marriages pull down the overall value of marriage
and that marriage rates drop while out-of-wedlock
childbearing, already at epidemic levels in Europe,
rises.
That’s why I’m voting for the Protect Marriage
Amendment.
community, regardless of
church background or affiliation.
Knights of Columbus sponsors
Tootsie-Roll fundraiser, Oct. 17-19
The Knights of Columbus Council #9128 of St. Luke’s Catholic
Church will be having an Annual fundraiser for the Marian Home
for the developmentally disabled on Oct. 17, 18, and 19. This event
Cloverly Street and Las Tunas Drive. They will wear their yellow
vests and ask for donations, giving giant Tootsie-Rolls as a “thank
you” to the donors. The Knights have a goal of raising $5,000.
Marian Homes was initiated in February of 1986, after a group
of parents gathered to discuss the welfare of young adults with disabilities
and their welfare when parents were no longer able to provide
for them. Out of this meeting and many others that followed a
nonprofit corporation was formed in 1987.
Their goal is to provide a permanent residence to young adults
within the context of a “home like” atmosphere. Marian Homes
serves all of Southern California. There are no geographic limits to
serving their residents.
All young adults work outside the home in the local community
or in educational or vocational training settings. Several young
adults have jobs working at local restaurants, schools, and day care
centers.
The homes are staffed by a full-time house administrator who
lives at the home during the week. On weekends, there are live-in
relief staff members. A full-time program director oversees the staff
and the activities at the home.
