AA boss: Tough times ahead
Tom Horton, the new chief executive
of AMR Corp, parent company
of American Airlines, warned
the carrier’s 88,000 workers that
tough times lay ahead as the
company restructures after entering
Chapter 11 creditor protection
two weeks ago. “We will have
to make very tough and sometimes
upopular decisions that will
impact people’s lives,” he said,
confirming that the workforce
will be trimmed and the network
downsized. He also suggested
that AMR could be the target of a
takeover while in Chapter 11.
exclusive branding rights to fastjet.
Close to 2,400 <strong>order</strong>s for Boeing, Airbus new engine-variants
<strong>Southwest</strong>’s firm <strong>order</strong> late last
close to the 1,000 mark, less
than four months after the
The deal will firmly dispel recent
rumours that Boeing could still
reverse the decision to re-engine
its best-selling <strong>737</strong> workhorse
for its own fuel-efficient offering,
the A320neo family, which
was announced last spring.
AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS
FedEx Express <strong>order</strong>s 27 Boeing 767
Freighters powered by GE’s CF6 engines
In <strong>order</strong> to continue the modernization of the
company’s aircraft fleet, FedEx Express signed
an agreement with Boeing to purchase 27 new
767-300F aircraft, with three arriving in fiscal
2014 and six per year in fiscal 2015-2018. The
767s were selected as the best choice to begin
replacing FedEx Express’s MD10 aircraft, some
of which are more than 40 years old. The 767s
will provide similar capacity as the MD10s,
with improved reliability, an approximate 30%
increase in fuel efficiency and a minimum of a
20% reduction in unit operating costs. FedEx
Express has selected the CF6-80C2 engine to
power the 27 new Boeing 767-300 Freighters.
FedEx Express is also delaying the delivery of
11 777F aircraft, two of which will be deferred
from fiscal 2013, five from fiscal 2014 and one
per year in fiscal 2015-2018, to better balance
air network capacity to demand. As a result of
these deferrals, FedEx Express will place into
service four 777s in fiscal 2013 and two in fiscal
2014. The company is also exercising two
777 options for aircraft to be delivered at the
end of the delivery schedule.
Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings confirmed
that its Atlas Air unit has accepted delivery
Air’s <strong>order</strong> of nine 747-8Fs with Boeing.
Together with an initial 747-8F delivered in
early November, the three aircraft will be
