Times. Rubicon will receive 

exclusive branding rights to fastjet.

FedEx Express <strong>order</strong>s 27 Boeing 767 

Freighters powered by GE’s CF6 engines 

In <strong>order</strong> to continue the modernization of the 

company’s aircraft fleet, FedEx Express signed 

an agreement with Boeing to purchase 27 new 

767-300F aircraft, with three arriving in fiscal 

2014 and six per year in fiscal 2015-2018. The 

767s were selected as the best choice to begin 

replacing FedEx Express’s MD10 aircraft, some 

of which are more than 40 years old. The 767s 

will provide similar capacity as the MD10s, 

with improved reliability, an approximate 30% 

increase in fuel efficiency and a minimum of a 

20% reduction in unit operating costs. FedEx 

Express has selected the CF6-80C2 engine to 

power the 27 new Boeing 767-300 Freighters. 

FedEx Express is also delaying the delivery of 

11 777F aircraft, two of which will be deferred 

from fiscal 2013, five from fiscal 2014 and one 

per year in fiscal 2015-2018, to better balance 

air network capacity to demand. As a result of 

these deferrals, FedEx Express will place into 

service four 777s in fiscal 2013 and two in fiscal 

2014. The company is also exercising two 

777 options for aircraft to be delivered at the 

end of the delivery schedule. 

VARIGLOG takes delivery of second 

AEI B<strong>737</strong>-400SF 

Aeronautical Engineers (AEI) reported 

that Varig Logistics has taken delivery of its 

second AEI B<strong>737</strong>-400SF 11 Pallet Configuration 

Passenger to Freighter Conversion. The 

aircraft, a high gross weight B<strong>737</strong>-400 (MSN 

25595) was built in 1992 and underwent 

passenger to freighter modification at AEI’s 

Authorized Conversion Center, Flightstar 

Aircraft Services, which is located in Jacksonville, 

Florida. The aircraft is being leased 

to Varig Logistics by Aviation Capital Group 

(ACG) which is located in Newport Beach, 

California. 

Atlas Air Worldwide takes delivery 

of two more 747-8 Freighters 

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings confirmed 

that its Atlas Air unit has accepted delivery 

of the company’s second and third Boeing 

747-8 Freighters. The aircraft are part of Atlas 

Air’s <strong>order</strong> of nine 747-8Fs with Boeing. 

Together with an initial 747-8F delivered in 

early November, the three aircraft will be 

operated for British Airways World Cargo 

(BAWC) under a long-term ACMI (aircraft, 

crew, maintenance and insurance) contract 

between BAWC and Global Supply Systems 

Limited (GSS), a UK company in which Atlas 

Air Worldwide holds a 49% interest. Atlas

Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental receives 

FAA certification 

Boeing received certification for the new 

747-8 Intercontinental from the U.S. Federal 

Aviation Administration (FAA). Certification 

clears the way for delivery of the new airplane 

early next year. The FAA presented 

Boeing an Amended Type Certificate (ATC) 

and the amended Production Certificate for 

Boeing’s newest passenger airplane. The 

European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is 

expected to issue its ATC for the airplane in 

the next couple of days. 

JetBlue selects P&W PurePower 

PW1100G-JM engines for A320neo 

JetBlue Airways selected Pratt & Whitney 

PurePower PW1100G-JM engines for its recently 

<strong>order</strong>ed fleet of Airbus A320neo aircraft. 

The memorandum of understanding 

(MOU) includes 86 PurePower engines with 

a long-term PureSolution maintenance service 

agreement. Deliveries for the carrier’s firm 

aircraft <strong>order</strong> are scheduled to start in 2018.

which was financed from FLY’s unrestricted 

cash and new bank debt. FLY also announced 

that it has sold two aircraft from its portfolio 

for a total of $139m. The aircraft sold were a 

B777-200ER on lease to KLM and a B<strong>737</strong>-800 

on lease to SpiceJet. Both aircraft were sold at 

a premium to their net book value. 

Skywest Airlines to introduce 5 additional 

ATR 72-600s into Australia 

Australia’s Skywest Airlines will introduce five 

more ATR 72-600 aircraft into its fleet, to be 

operated on a range of routes on behalf of 

major carrier Virgin Australia. These five aircraft 

take to 13 the number of firm <strong>order</strong>s

for Skywest Airlines: four ATR 72-500s, which 

are already operating on Virgin Australia’s 

regional network, and nine new generation 

ATR 72-600s, the first of which Skywest will 

receive next year. This new contract for five 

ATR 72-600s also includes options for eight 

additional aircraft. The list price of the agreement, 

including options, is over $295m. Like 

the ATR 72-500s now operated for Virgin 

Australia by Skywest Airlines, all of the ATR 

72-600 aircraft will fly in Virgin’s new white 

and red colour scheme. The latest five aircraft 

are scheduled to be delivered from early 2013 

through early 2014. 

<strong>Southwest</strong> <strong>order</strong>s 150 <strong>737</strong> <strong>MAX</strong> airplanes 

and 58 Next-Generation <strong>737</strong>s 

<strong>Southwest</strong> Airlines finalized a firm <strong>order</strong> for 

150 fuel-efficient <strong>737</strong> <strong>MAX</strong> airplanes. <strong>Southwest</strong> 

is the first customer to finalize an <strong>order</strong> 

for the <strong>737</strong> <strong>MAX</strong> and becomes the launch 

customer for the new LEAP-1B engine-variant. 

In addition, the airline expanded its current 

<strong>order</strong> book with an <strong>order</strong> for 58 additional 

CFM56-7BE-powered Next-Generation 

<strong>737</strong>-800s. The firm <strong>order</strong> is the largest in Boeing 

history both in dollar value, nearly $19bn 

at list prices, and the number of airplanes. It 

supports <strong>Southwest</strong>’s initiative to modernize 

its all-Boeing fleet, the world’s largest fleet 

of <strong>737</strong>s. As the <strong>737</strong> <strong>MAX</strong> launch customer, 

<strong>Southwest</strong> will take delivery of the first airplane 

when it enters service in 2017. 

H80 Turboprop engine received EASA 

Engine Certificate 

GE Aviation’s H80 turboprop engine has received 

type certification from the European 

Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This is the first 

GE Aviation engine to receive its initial type 

certification from EASA. “The type certification 

on the H80 engine is a significant achievement 

for the GE Aviation facility in the Czech 

Republic along with the engineering teams 

in Evendale, Ohio, and Lynn, Massachusetts,

Flying Colours delivers Challenger 

850 to Lily Jet of China 

Flying Colours, a global aviation service 

company, delivered its fourth Chinese registered 

aircraft – a Bombardier Challenger 

850 business jet, Serial No. 8098 – to Shenyang 

based air charter company Lily Jet last 

month. The aircraft left Flying Colours’ Peterborough, 

Canada facility and arrived at the 

Lily Jet base on November 29th. The aircraft 

is scheduled to go into service immediately 

and will be available for third party charter.

Monarch signs base maintenance agreement with easyJet 

Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAEL) signed a base maintenance agreement with 

easyJet to carry out a series of wing rear spar inspection service bulletins on their Airbus 

A320 fleet. Under the terms of the agreement Monarch Aircraft Engineerings will 

provide easyJet with a dedicated line of maintenance during the 2011/2012 winter 

period at its London Luton facility, where they will perform the terminating action of 

SB57-1154R1 & SB57-1155R1.

SR Technics signs exclusive agreements 

with Philippine Airlines 

SR Technics, part of the Mubadala Aerospace 

Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul 

(MRO) network, signed exclusive Repair Cycle 

Management (RCM) and engine maintenance 

contracts with Philippine Airlines (PAL), 

the flag carrier of the Philippines. The RCM 

agreement is for PAL’s entire Airbus fleet, 

totaling 33 wide and narrow body aircraft, 

and covering in total 2,000 part numbers. 

The services provided will include component 

maintenance, management, logistics and engineering 

support. The engine maintenance 

contract covers 21 CFM56-5C engines for 

the entire Airbus A340-330 fleet. 

CIRCOR Aerospace to manufacture 

landing gear for BLACK HAWK Helicopters 

The CIRCOR Aerospace Products Group has 

been selected by Sikorsky Aircraft to execute 

a multi-year contract, with an initial award 

of approximately $25m, to manufacture 

landing gear for its H-60 – BLACK HAWK

Spirit AeroSystems to realign Boeing 

787 Dreamliner wing component 

production 

To meet unprecedented demand for its 

products and services, Spirit AeroSystems 

announced plans to transition production 

of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fixed leading 

edge composite wing component from Spirit’s 

Tulsa, Okla., facility to Spirit’s Malaysia 

facility. The realignment will allow Spirit to 

make more efficient use of its global manufacturing 

operations. Oklahoma employees 

working on the 787 fixed leading edge will 

be transitioned to other <strong>program</strong>s to help 

meet increasing rates. Increased production 

is planned for all Spirit facilities. 

Comlux Aviation Services gains full 

Bombardier Global ASF approval 

Comlux Aviation Services of Indianapolis, Indiana 

has been appointed by Bombardier 

as a fully Authorized Service Facility (ASF) 

for the Global aircraft family. A designated 

service facility for Learjet 40, Learjet 45, 

Learjet 60, Challenger 604, Challenger 605, 

Challenger 300, and Challenger 850 aircraft 

since May 2009, Comlux Aviation Services 

also held an Aircraft-on-Ground line maintenance 

facility designation for Global aircraft. 

With the addition of the full ASF accreditation 

for Global business jets, Comlux Aviation 

Services now services the full offering 

of Bombardier business aircraft.

long front fuselage section for the A350 XWB 

in Saint-Nazaire (France). This phase will continue 

over the coming weeks and once completed, 

the front fuselage will be transported 

by Beluga to the A350 XWB Final Assembly 

Line in Toulouse. This will be the first major 

section of the A350 XWB to enter the Final 

Assembly Line. This front fuselage is destined 

for the A350 XWB static test airframe, the 

first A350 XWB to be assembled. It will be 

followed closely by the first “flyable” airframe 

for MSN1, one of the five flight test 

aircraft Airbus will build. The static airframe is 

used solely for ground tests that will demonstrate 

the aircraft’s ability to sustain certification 

loads and provide key data ahead of the 

first flight in the first half of 2013. 

FINANCIAL NEWS 

AAR reports second quarter fiscal 

year 2012 results 

AAR reported second quarter fiscal year 

2012 consolidated sales of $475.9m and 

income from continuing operations of 

$17.5m. Results for the second quarter include 

$1.4m of transaction-related expenses 

for acquisitions announced during the second 

quarter. For the second quarter of the 

prior fiscal year, the Company reported sales 

of $440.5m and income from continuing 

operations of $18.1m. 

Sales to commercial customers increased 

11% versus the second quarter of last year 

and were principally driven by strength at 

the Company’s supply chain business. Sales 

to government and defense customers increased 

5% compared to last year due to 

sales growth at AAR Airlift and at the Company’s 

Defense Logistics business. The Company 

generated $30.4m in cash flow from 

operations and had capital expenditures, 

exclusive of the Airinmar acquisition, of 

$13.4m during the second quarter. 

FedEx Corp. reports strong second 

quarter revenue and earnings growth 

FedEx Corp. reported consolidated revenues 

of $10.59bn for the 2nd quarter, up 10% 

from $9.63bn the previous year. Operating income 

was $780m, up 66% from $469m last 

year, while operating margin was 7.4%, up 

from 4.9% the previous year. Net income was 

$497m, up 76% from $283m a year ago. FedEx 

projects earnings to be $1.25 to $1.45 

per diluted share in the third quarter and 

reconfirms its forecast of $6.25 to $6.75 per 

diluted share for fiscal 2012. This guidance 

assumes the current market outlook for fuel 

prices, normal winter weather and moderate 

growth in the global economy.

Jackson Square Aviation (JSA) closed a $435m 

secured term loan, which provides the Company 

with committed long-term debt capacity 

for eleven next-generation aircraft. Financing 

for the facility was provided by DVB Bank 

SE, Norddeutsche Landesbank, and Citibank. 

“This is something of a landmark deal for our 

company,” commented Scott Weiss, JSA’s 

COO and EVP, Capital Markets. “It’s the largest 

facility we have executed to date and the first 

to mix widebody and narrowbody aircraft. Our 

lender group certainly worked hard to execute 

for us in a turbulent financing environment.” 

MILITARY & DEFENSE 

Australian Aerospace delivers 15th 

MRH90 Helicopter 

Local defence manufacturer, Australian Aerospace, 

delivered the 15th MRH90 (Multi-Role 

Helicopter), tail number 014, to the Australian 

Defence Force (ADF) – the second such 

handover in two weeks. Australian Aerospace’s 

production facility on Brisbane Airport 

is assembling and delivering 46 MRH90s to 

replace Army and Navy Black Hawk and Sea 

King helicopters. 

£59m Indian Hawk spares contract 

for BAE Systems 

BAE Systems secured a £59m contract with the 

Indian Air Force (IAF) and aircraft manufacturer 

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the 

provision of spares and ground support equipment 

to aid the Hawk training aircraft operations. 

This brings the total value of Hawk-related 

contracts won in India to more than £600m 

in the last 18 months. Hawk is manufactured 

in India under license by Hindustan Aeronautics 

Limited with materials, parts and support 

services provided by BAE Systems.

Boeing delivers 2nd Peace Eye 

AEW&C aircraft to Republic of Korea 

Air Force 

Boeing delivered the second Peace Eye 

<strong>737</strong> Airborne Early Warning and Control 

(AEW&C) aircraft to the Republic of Korea 

Air Force (ROKAF). The aircraft was delivered 

ahead of schedule to ROKAF Base Gimhae, 

the main operating base for the Peace Eye 

fleet. Peace Eye No. 2 is the first aircraft in 

the fleet to be modified into an AEW&C 

configuration by Korea Aerospace Industries 

(KAI) at its facility in Sacheon. Two additional 

Peace Eye aircraft are being modified by 

KAI in Sacheon and will be delivered to the 

ROKAF in 2012. 

Ducommun awarded $14m in contracts 

from Bell Helicopter 

Ducommun Incorporated received contracts 

totaling approximately $14m from Bell Helicopter. 

The Ducommun LaBarge Technologies 

business unit (DLT), a provider of electronics 

manufacturing services (EMS), will produce 

electronic assemblies and wiring harnesses 

for the V-22 Osprey military aircraft. DLT has 

supported the V-22 <strong>program</strong> since 2005. DLT 

expects the new contracts will expand production 

on the V-22 <strong>program</strong> at the Company’s 

Huntsville, Ark., and Joplin, Mo., operations 

through the fall of 2013. 

Mexican Air Force takes delivery of 

Airbus Military C295 

The Mexican Air Force has taken delivery of 

a new C295 aircraft that it <strong>order</strong>ed from Airbus 

Military. This <strong>order</strong> is in addition to the 

five C295s delivered last year and that the 

Mexican Secretary of Defence already operates. 

The primary use of the aircraft will be 

transport of troops and paratroops. It can also 

be readily configured for medical evacuation 

(MEDEVAC) or can carry up to nine tonnes of 

palletized or bulk cargo. 

OGMA and EMBRAER sign partnership agreement for KC-390 

OGMA and EMBRAER Defense 

and Security signed a partnership 

agreement for the KC-390 

aircraft development <strong>program</strong>. 

The contracted work package 

covers the industrialization, 

production and product 

support phases of the KC-390 

central fuselage panels, elevators, 

fairings and landing-gear 

doors. Production of the first 

KC-390 prototype is to begin in 

2013 and the aircraft’s maiden 

flight is scheduled for 2011.

Gulfstream International Airlines announced 

its adoption of a new name and 

brand: Silver Airways. VPAA Co. dba/Gulfstream 

International Airlines was founded in 

May 2011, when Victory Park Capital, a Chicago-based 

investment firm, acquired select 

assets from the former Gulfstream International 

Airlines, which filed for bankruptcy in 

November 2010. Silver Airways continues the 

evolution of the carrier under Victory Park. 

Aviation training centre Baltic Aviation 

Academy signed a contract with Austrian 

company Air X Executive Jets. According to 

the newly signed agreement the academy will 

provide the Austrian carrier with type rating 

training services. It is the first Baltic Aviation 

Academy‘s contract with the business and private 

jet charter flight provider. 

On December 15th the official opening ceremony 

for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 Training 

Center was held in Zhukovsky. The Training 

Center offers the complete cycle of training 

for flight and technical staff of the SSJ100 customers 

and has a range of the most advanced 

training equipment and simulators including 

Computer Based Training (CBT), Flight Procedure 

Training Device (FPTD), Flight Training 

Device (FTD LV), Full Flight Simulator (FFS) and 

Cabin Emergency Evacuation Trainer (CEET). 

The Training Center is able to train up to 180 

pilots and 250 technicians annually starting 

from 2012. 

VAS Aero Services will open a sales and 

marketing office in Singapore in early 2012 

to support its growing customer base in Asia. 

The Singapore office will serve as VAS’ gateway 

to the Asian market enabling the company 

to expand its presence and be closer to 

our customers’. VAS Aero Services, an H.I.G. 

Capital portfolio company, is a provider of aftermarket 

services in the aviation industry. VAS 

Aero Services sources, warehouses, and markets 

aftermarket components across a broad 

range of aircraft and engine platforms and 

provides related services to airlines, OEM’s, 

and MRO providers around the world. 

Delta Air Lines and US Airways announced 

the closing of their agreement to transfer 

takeoff and landing rights at New York ‘s La- 

Guardia and Washington D.C .’s Reagan National 

airports. The agreement was approved 

on Oct. 10 , 2011, by the U.S. Department 

of Transportation, which concluded that the 

transaction is in the public interest because of 

the service benefits and efficiencies that would 

result in both New York and Washington, D.C. 

Under the agreement, Delta acquired 132 slot 

pairs at LaGuardia from US Airways and US 

Airways acquired from Delta 42 slot pairs at 

Reagan National, as well as the rights to operate 

additional daily service to Sao Paulo, Brazil 

in 2015. In addition, the airlines divested 16 

slot pairs at LaGuardia and eight slot pairs at 

Reagan National to airlines with limited or no 

service at those airports. 

Aviation spare parts platform Locatory.com 

signed a cooperation agreement at the Dubai 

Air Show with the Russian State Research Institute 

of Civil Aviation (GosNIIGA). According 

to the agreement, both parties will work 

closely together in their attempt to ensure the 

authenticity of aviation parts within the Russian 

market. A successful implementation of 

the agreement terms will enable Locatory.com 

to offer its clients new prospects in Eastern Europe, 

Russia and the CIS. In close cooperation 

with GosNIIGA Locatory.com will continuously 

modify the aircraft parts platform based on the 

recommendations and guidelines provided by 

the institute. 

Embraer’s large Legacy 650 executive jet has 

been type certified by the Civil Aviation Administration 

of China (CAAC) with the revised 

Validation Type Certificate Data Sheet. This 

paves the way for customers to register and 

operate the Legacy 650 in China. The jet has 

been certified by other major aviation regu-

latory authorities, including Brazil’s National 

Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), European Aviation 

Safety Authority (EASA) and United States 

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In 2011 

alone, Embraer received many <strong>order</strong>s for the 

Legacy 650 from Chinese customers, including 

13 for Minsheng Financial Leasing Co. 

Ethiopian Airlines became Star Alliance’s 

28th member airline on December 13th and 

the third African airline in the alliance. The 

joining ceremony was held at Addis Ababa’s 

Bole International Airport, where the Star Alliance 

Chief Executive Board (CEB) welcomed 

Ethiopian Airlines into the alliance. 

LAN Airlines released that during November, 

system passenger traffic increased 13.4% as 

capacity rose 15.1%. As a result, the Company’s 

load factor for the month decreased 1.3 

points to 80.3%. International passenger traffic 

accounted for approximately 65.6% of total 

passenger traffic. Starting in January 2011, 

these figures include AIRES’ domestic and international 

operations. 

The Revisa group announced the acquisition 

of CLTOP (TCL Up Air Services Ltd.), a company 

with strong presence in the general aviation 

segment, recognized for high quality services 

on maintenance, repair and overhaul of 

Virgin Australia is collaborating with Lufthansa Systems to develop a state-of-the art 

inflight entertainment system (IFE) using Wi-Fi technology delivered to personal, handheld 

devices on its aircraft. The 

two companies signed a letter 

of intent to produce and install 

the initial systems, known as 

BoardConnect, from mid-2012. 

“This system, considered to be 

at the leading edge of IFE technology, 

provides guests with a 

wide range of products including 

video and audio streaming 

delivered on demand to personal 

entertainment devices (PEDs) 

or Wi-Fi enabled laptops,” said

is approved by the ANAC through CHE 1009- 

41, standards / Classes D1/F3 and H. It has 

equipped laboratories for fuel system, electrical, 

non-destructive testing, machining, digital 

test stand, painting, assembly, among others. 

Euravia reported the re-launch and expansion 

of on-site services through the newly established 

Euravia Mobile Repair Team (EMRT). 

The new EMRT is led by a Senior Product Support 

manager, who has over 30 years’ experience 

on gas turbines, including direct ‘handson’ 

experience with P&WC and with a major 

PT6 fleet operator. The EMRT will initially 

continue to provide PT6A and PT6T on-site 

support and Euravia will further expand PT6B 

and PT6C in 2012. 

In a unanimous decision, the Federal Court of 

Appeal denied Air Canada’s appeal against 

Porter Airlines Inc. and the Toronto Port 

Authority (TPA) in which Air Canada alleged 

wrongdoing related to the slot allocation at 

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The Court 

found each of Air Canada’s arguments to be 

without merit and also awarded Porter and 

the TPA payment of their legal costs, in an 

amount to be determined at a later date. The 

judgment, which was released on December 

12, 2011, reiterated that the agreements between 

Porter and the TPA were entirely appropriate 

and found no evidence of unfair treatment 

towards Air Canada. 

Garmin International, a global satellite navigation 

company, received the European Aviation 

Safety Agency’s (EASA) validation of the 

U.S. Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for 

the GTN 650 and GTN 750 series touchscreen 

PEOPLE 

The Governing Board of oneworld elected American Airlines chairman, president and 

chief executive Tom Horton as its chairman. He takes on the role from Gerard Arpey, 

whom he succeeded at the helm of the alliance’s US partner late last month following 

Arpey’s decision to retire from the carrier. Horton will act as “first among equals” of the 

chief executives of the group’s member airlines, leading oneworld as the alliance undergoes 

its biggest expansion in five years with the addition in 2012 of airberlin, Kingfisher 

Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. 

The chief executive board of Star Alliance appointed Mark Schwab to head the Star Alliance 

central organisation, based in Frankfurt, Germany as its new chief executive. Schwab 

comes from Star Alliance member United where he was responsible for the company’s alliances 

as senior vice president Alliances. He succeeds Jaan Albrecht, who was appointed 

as CEO of Austrian Airlines on November 1, 2011. 

TAT Technologies appointed Itsik Maaravi as its new president and chief executive officer 

effective January 1, 2012. Maaravi is currently president of TAT’s Piedmont Aviation Component 

Services, LLC subsidiary (Piedmont), a position he has held since July 2011. 

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty appointed Gilles Garczynski, as executive vice president, Human 

Resources. He replaces Stéphane Legrand, who has transferred to another position within 

the Safran group.
