BooK month
Guillaume Apolinaire (1880-1918) Alcools
Matin d’octobre
C’est l’heure exquise et matinale
Que rougit un soleil soudain
A travers la brume automnale
Tombent les feuilles du jardin.
Leur chute est lente. On peut les suivre
Du regard en reconnaissant
Le chêne à sa feuille de cuivre,
L’érable à sa feuille de sang.
Les dernières, les plus rouillées,
Tombent des branches dépouillées ;
The stripped and shapely
Maple grieves
The ghosts of her
Departed leaves.
The ground is hard,
As hard as stone.
The year is old,
The birds are flown.
And yet the world,
In its distress,
Displays a certain
Loveliness
John Updike
That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou see’st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west;
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death’s second self, that seals up all in rest.
In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the deathbed whereon it must expire,
Consumed with that which it was nourished by.
This thou perceiv’st, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.
William Shakespeare (1609)

A note from
the Executive Director Michael Crelinsten
O
n the Canadian twenty dollar bill is
a quote from Gabrielle Roy: “Could
we ever know each other in the
slightest without the arts?” We often give profile
to our ideals, to that which we value, to which
we aspire, but equally often we are distracted
from those very values by the exigencies of day
to day operational reality. The profile given to
the sentiments of Gabrielle Roy on our national
currency, notwithstanding, we are living in the
midst of some of the most dramatic cuts to the
cultural and social vehicles of Canadian society
that we have seen in a generation.
Our community has traditionally placed great
value on education, learning (they are not the
same), literacy and the arts. In this regard,
our Autumn programme season, will be offering
many unique programmmes including
the multiple award winning film “Little Rose”,
a true story that looks at pre-democratic
Poland, “Nicky’s Family,” a movie that documents
the incredible, nearly forgotten story
of the rescue of Jewish children by English
businessman, Nicky Winton, and an evening
with Marc Levy, l’auteur français le plus lu
dans le monde.
It is this kind of programming that gives life to
Gabrielle Roy’s observation and that fuels our
imagination and enhances our understanding of
our history and the world around us. It is to this
kind of activity that a number of independent
studies refer when describing the link between
literacy, the ability to understand the needs of others
and the inclination to engage on their behalf. It
is precisely this kind of programming and informal
learning, offered by the Library, that nurtures our
community’s capacity for Tikun Olam.
We look forward to your joining us at the Library,
to accessing our community’s Archives and to
attending a remarkable array of programmes
that bear testament to Gabrielle Roy’s insight
and enable us to know each other.
Un commentaire
du directeur général Michael Crelinsten
«Nous connaîtrions-nous seulement un
peu nous-mêmes, sans les arts ? »
film Little Rose (lauréat de plusieurs récompenses),
About the Jewish Public library
After nearly a century, we remain unique among Montreal’s – and
the world’s – Jewish institutions. An internationally-recognized
Judaica resource, we also meet the diverse informational, educational
and recreational needs of Montrealers. With our Main Library,
Children’s Library, Archives, Multimedia Centre and Cultural
Programmes for adults and children, we connect our community to
the world …while bringing the world to our community.
The Main Library
Whether you’re a recreational reader or a focused scholar, you’ll find what you’re looking
for among over 150,000 items in English, French, Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian.
Like any great public library, we carry the latest fiction and non-fiction bestsellers,
first-run DVDs, major newspapers and magazines, and music and audiobook CDs.
Our Judaica holdings – North America’s largest circulating collection – rival those of
major academic institutions.
In addition, we maintain special collections on Montreal and Canadian Jewry, Yizkor
(Memorial) books of pre-Holocaust Jewish communities, sheet music and photographic
archives, German-language Judaica, selections from Irving Layton’s personal
library and other rarities.
If you can’t visit us, let us visit you: our friendly Books-on-Wheels volunteers can bring
the Library to your door*. Our members can also use our Interlibrary Loan service to
obtain books from elsewhere, often for free or a minimal charge.
* Call (514) 345-2627, ext. 3003 for more information.
The Norman Berman Children’s Library
Our mascot, Shelley the Turtle, might move in little steps…but she still can hardly wait
to welcome you and your little and not-so-little ones to our library!
With over 40,000 books, magazines, DVDs, kits and CDs, we take our young patrons
to heart, while keeping their parents, grandparents and caregivers in mind. Aside from
those classic favourites from your childhood – and today’s soon-to-be classics – we
supplement the school curriculum with extensive collections that meet the information
and project needs of young students. Children and families also enjoy the
comprehensive collection of materials dealing with Jewish holidays, life and history, and
the exciting world of storytelling and children's literature.
We have a variety of programmes and activities for babies, toddlers and children
up to 14 years of age. Pre-School story times and music, author visits, and motherdaughter
book review clubs are just a sample of what’s happening at any given time.
You will find a detailed listing of all children’s programmes on pages 33 to 36.
A book for your child – every month, for free!
Brought to you by the Jewish Public Library.
As part of the community wide GEN J Initiative, The PJ Library® (“PJ” for pajama) is
a programme seeking to engage Jewish families in Jewish life. Each participating child
receives an age-appropriate Jewish book or CD every month, free of charge. The aim
is to help families explore core values of Judaism and pass them on to their children.
The book and music list was chosen by foremost early-childhood experts. All books
come with guides to help families use the selection in their homes. The list includes a
wide array of themes such as Jewish holidays, folktales and Jewish family life.
Montreal's programme, for children between 6 months and 5½ years old, was the
first pilot project in Canada. It now reaches 1,620 children. To sign up please visit
www.pjlibrary.org and enroll your child today!
A complete set of PJ Library books is available at the JPL.
“History Detective:
Tracking Synagogues, Uncovering a Community”
Beginning in the 1880s, there was a mass migration of Jews from Eastern
Europe to Montreal. Here they established small congregations, replicas of
those left behind.
To document the movement and development of Montreal’s Jewish community
before 1945, much like a detective, Sara tracked the locations
of Montreal’s early synagogues. The result is a fascinating story that
describes the social, religious, and economic aspects of a distinct group
of people through the architectural traces of its culture.
Movie presentation in French with English subtitles, 100 minutes
“The Names of Love” by Michel Leclerc (France, 2011)
with Jacques Gamblin and Sara Forestier
An attractive young woman with strong left leanings uses her sexuality to
convince men with opposing views of her ways. Her encounter with a man
in his 40s that she mistakes for a fascist will completely change her life.
She is a non-practicing Muslim. He turns out to be Jewish without really
knowing it himself. Their complex identities and secrets of their respective
pasts torment them and influence their lives.
Under a provocative shell, this is a refreshing comedy that tackles serious
and passionate topics such as politics, identity crises, religion, and quite
simply, love.
A discussion of these topics will follow the film, led and animated by
Maurice elia, novelist and film specialist.
First We Take Berlin: The 2012 Jewish Life in Germany Tour
In June of 2012, Eddie Paul joined a group of North American Jews
invited as part of the “Jewish Life in Germany” programme to tour sites of
Jewish interest in Berlin and Dresden. Roughly divided between Holocaust
memorials, synagogues, Jewish schools, rabbinical seminaries, and community
centres, this annual programme is organized to enhance the
understanding of postwar Jewish communal life in Germany. This will be
more than a travelogue: the presentation will look at the borderlines of
institutional Jewish identity in 21st century Berlin through metaphors of
identity and reconciliation.
eddie Paul is Head of Bibliographic & Information Services at the Jewish
Commemoration and Performance in Yiddish with English supertitles
60th Anniversary of the Night of the Murdered Poets:
August 12, 1952
Despite growing repression, Soviet Yiddish literature was one of the most fruitful
branches of world Yiddish literature from 1917 to 1948. However, the fate
of Soviet Yiddish literature was sealed on August 12, 1952 with the execution
of the foremost Yiddish writers. Acclaimed performer Shane Baker will pay
tribute to the lives of these writers and their cultural legacy through a program
of dramatic readings in Yiddish, with English supertitles. eugene Orenstein will
speak in English and Yiddish on the significance of Soviet Yiddish literature.
Shane Baker is Executive Director of the Congress for Jewish Culture in
A film in English, 96 minutes
“Nicky’s Family” by Matej Minác š & Patrik Pašš
(Czech Republic, 2011)
Nicky's Family tells the nearly forgotten story of Nicholas Winton, an
Englishman who organized the rescue of 669 Czech and Slovak children
just before the outbreak of World War II. This film fully reveals for the first
time, ` the details of the secret rescue operation orchestrated by the now
103 year-old Winton – an operation the likes of which has never been
repeated in recent history. This film demonstrates how one man can
inspire people and change the present-day world.
Jane Litwack, a Montreal Holocaust survivor who was rescued by Sir
Nicholas Winton, follows the movie presentation with a brief account of
her experiences.
Introduced by Susyn Borer, Immediate Past President, Montreal Holocaust
“Partisans of Vilna” weekend
Documentary in Yiddish and English with English subtitles, 130 minutes
“Partisans of Vilna: The Untold Story of Jewish Resitance
during World War II” by Joshua Waletzky (USA, 1986)
Joshua Waletzky blends songs, newsreels and archival footage with interviews
of over forty Holocaust survivors to paint an eye-opening portrait of
the courageous Jewish resistance in Vilna, the “Jerusalem of Lithuania.”
Recounting how a commando unit was formed under tremendous risk to
conduct sabotage missions against the Nazis, the film explores the moral
dilemmas facing the Jewish youth who organized an underground resistance
in the Vilna ghetto, and fought as partisans in the woods against the Third
Reich. More than just a record of great historical importance, Partisans of
Vilna is an intensely stirring and uplifting commemoration of heroes during
the darkest of times.
Joshua Waletzky, award-winning director, editor, writer and musician, will
introduce his film.
Presented in partnership with the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre
and with the collaboration of the Mapping Memories project.
Sponsored by the Nathan Igelfeld Foundation.
Presentation in English with Yiddish songs and poems available in translation.
“Cultural Resistance of the Partisans of Vilna”
What is the legacy of the “cultural resistance” of Jews caught in the
genocidal campaign of World War II? Vilna, the "Jerusalem of Lithuania,"
was a Jewish cultural center of great importance before WWII. During
the war, Vilna was the cradle of not only a large armed movement, but
a remarkable cultural resistance. Many of the songs and poems produced
by Vilna's Jews have become icons of this tragic period. Joshua
Waletzky, director of Partisans of Vilna, commemorates and explores this
cultural legacy with a presentation of songs and poems by Kaczerginski,
Sutzkever, Glezer, and Glick.
Joshua Waletzky is a documentary film director, editor, writer and musician.
His extensive body of work includes Academy Award-nominated Partisans
of Vilna and Image before My Eyes. Josh’s work has garnered Academy
Awards, Peabody and Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award nomination.
This event takes place during a special Open House at the Montreal
Holocaust Memorial Museum from 10 am to 4 pm. Don’t miss the opportunity
before or after the presentation to visit the museum for free, and
to discover artifacts portraying Jewish life before, during and after the
Holocaust.
“The Virgin Cure ” with author Ami McKay
The Virgin Cure is the story of a young girl abandoned and forced to fend
for herself in the poverty to post-Civil War New York City. This is a tale
in women’s medicine in nineteenth century New York. In a powerful
novel, Ami McKay brings to life the story of early, forward thinking social
warriors creating a narrative that readers will find inspiring, poignant and
utterly unforgettable.
An Evening with Leslie Maitland
“Crossing the Borders of Time:
A True Story of War, Exile, and Love Reclaimed”
Journalist Leslie Maitland will discuss her new book, Crossing the Borders
of Time: A True Story of War, Exile, and Love Reclaimed and will further
illustrate it with an in-depth PowerPoint presentation. The dramatic story
of Maitland’s mother’s life unfolds against a vivid historical portrait of the
Jewish experience in Nazi Germany, occupied France, a Cuban detention
camp, and within the refugee community of New York City’s “Fourth Reich.”
At the heart of the story are star-crossed lovers – Leslie’s mother, a German
Jew, and her French Catholic fiancé – who were separated by war and family
… that is until Leslie sets out to reunite them.
An award-winning former New York Times investigative reporter, Leslie,
often discusses literature on the Diane Rehm Show on NPR. She is a
graduate of the University of Chicago and the Harvard Divinity School and
The Marvin A. Drimer Foundation presents the JBM Keynote Event
An evening with
Simon Sebag Montefiore “Jerusalem: The Biography”
Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three
faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgment Day and the battlefield
of today’s clash of civilizations. From King David to the 21st century, from
the birth of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict,
this is the epic history of three thousand years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism,
and coexistence. In this masterful narrative, Simon Sebag Montefiore brings
the holy city to life, through the people who created and destroyed it — from
Herod, Cleopatra and Nero to Churchill, Rasputin and Truman — and draws
on the latest scholarship, his own family history, and a lifetime of study to
show that the story of Jerusalem is truly the story of the world.
Simon Sebag Montefiore majored in history at Cambridge University. His
books are international bestsellers, and have been published in more
than thirty-five languages. Young Stalin won the Los Angeles Times Book
Prize for Biography, the Costa Biography Prize (UK), and Le Grand Prix de
Biographie (France). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
Introduced by Dr. Csaba Nikolenyi, Associate Professor, Department of
Political Science, Concrdia University.
While not guaranteeing success, the event should give a clear, practical
guide to performing the research.
An Evening with Noah Richler
“What We Talk About When We Talk About War”
Noah Richler wants Canadians to ask themselves whether Canada's role
in the war in Afghanistan truly reflects our country's values.
It's an important question, to which Richler's new book, What We Talk
About When We Talk About War, answers a resounding “no.” In his book,
Richler describes what he views as the militarization of Canada — a
shift from the Pearsonian notion of a peacekeeping nation to that of a
warrior culture.
“Fallen” by Lauren Kate
Lauren Kate’s story of fallen angels has captured the hearts and imaginations
of readers all over the world with enough action and intrigue to
guarantee readers an engrossing read. “If you’re looking for formulaic,
skip this one. Fallen has everything: mystery, elements of the supernatural
and compelling relationships. Move over vampires and werewolves, fallen
angels are now the objects of obsession!”
If you want to meet Lauren Kate in person, please join us at our Girls’
Night Out on Sunday, November 18th at 7 p.m. For further information,
“Moon Over Manifest” by Clare Vanderpool
“There's no magic in Manifest, Kansas. No vampires or zombies, no gossip
girls, no bling and no texting. But there are secrets, bootlegging,
con artists and a mystical gypsy. There are good friends, kind people,
clever schemes, lessons learned and not one but two engrossing stories.
Newbery award winning author, Vanderpool weaves humor and sorrow into
a complex tale involving murders, orphans and a mother in hiding. With
believable dialogue, vocabulary and imagery appropriate to time and
place, and well developed characters, this rich and rewarding first novel is
powerful in its simplicity and rich in historical detail.
Ingeniously plotted and gracefully told, this father/daughter tale will resonate
with any reader who's ever wondered whether those old family stories
really tell the whole truth.”
“Uglies” by Scott Westerfield
“Uglies is like the grandmother of teen dystopian fiction that is so popular
right now. In Scott Westerfield’s post apocalyptic futuristic society,
teens cannot wait to turn 16 when they will undergo an operation that
transforms them from “uglies” into beautiful “pretties.” The strong characterizations
and page turning plot will grab readers and will encourage
them to contemplate themes of betrayal, conformity, self-concept and
the invasiveness of technology. Young adults will sink their teeth into the
provocative questions about an image-obsessed society and the ethical
quandaries of a mole-turned-ally.”
“The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan
“Engaging characters, surprises at every turn, and a melding of mythology
and our everyday reality combine to make The Lightning Thief a thoroughly
enjoyable read. Riordan’s award-winning fast-paced adventure is fresh,
dangerous and funny. Percy is an appealing, but reluctant hero, the modernized
gods are hilarious and the parallels to Harry Potter are frequent
and obvious. A riotously paced quest tale of heroism that questions the
realities of our world, family, friendship and loyalty.”
On voit tout le temps, en automne,
Quelque chose qui vous étonne,
C’est une branche, tout à coup,
Qui s’effeuille dans votre cou.
C’est un petit arbre tout rouge,
Un, d’une autre couleur encor,
Et puis, partout, ces feuilles d’or
Qui tombent sans que rien ne bouge.
Nous aimons bien cette saison,
Mais la nuit si tôt va descendre !
Retournons vite à la maison
Rôtir nos marrons dans la cendre.
Lucie DELARUE-MARDRUS (1874-1945)
The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry’s cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.
The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I’ll put a trinket on.
Emily Dickinson
How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Déjà plus d’une feuille sèche
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Parsème les gazons jaunis ;
Colors gleaming in the sun.
Soir et matin, la brise est fraîche, At other times, they wildly fly
Hélas ! les beaux jours sont finis ! Until they nearly reach the sky.
On voit s’ouvrir les fleurs que garde Twisting, turning through the air
Le jardin, pour dernier trésor : Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Le dahlia met sa cocarde
Exhausted, drop to earth below
Et le souci sa toque d’or.
To wait, like children, for the snow.
La pluie au jardin fait des bulles ;
Elsie N. Brady
