From The Editor
In this "history-themed" issue, we are proud to introduce
two exciting columns, "History of Maadi" and "Egyptology."
You might ask, "how can history be exciting," but these two
authors definitely achieve that goal. I find it fascinating
how much of Egypt is in the Bible and that will be the main
focus of the Egyptology column and the History of Maadi
column will give us a new appreciation and understanding
of this little spot of land we call home.
We also have a Kids' Gallery, where your children (under
age 10) are invited to publish their art work. In the Book
Review, two historical children's books are reviewed,
highlighting some of America's history.
For the Language Page, we discuss Arabic words for the
ancient sights around us and in the Education Page, we
learn how useful it is to learn Arabic, not just so we can
communicate better in Egypt, but it also stretches our
brains a bit!
Please let us know what you think of the new content and
send us ideas and articles to editor@road9.info.
10 8 Words of Wisdom
Words of Wisdom
11 9
Aligning my Life
with God
I was excited as I drove to the home of someone I had
long admired. An intelligent, multidegreed speaker, she
was someone I wanted to be when I grew up. So when I
saw that her lawn needed mowing and her house was full
of sagging, thriftstore furniture, I was taken aback. Her
books were shelved on brick-and-board bookcases, and
she worked at a desk made of a sheet of plywood resting
on file cabinets. I’d expected better than this. Would I want
to live next door? How would her unmanicured yard affect
my property values?
A few minutes later at a modest restaurant, our conversation
was full of the kingdom: her passion for helping women
overseas, the mysteries of loving and letting go in family
life, an outreach project into her community. I wondered
By: Jan Johnson
how many people would have gone without help if she’d
spent more time on her lawn. My whole perspective
changed: I couldn’t help thinking how exciting it would be
to live next door to her.
When I left, I knew I’d been with someone who “seek[s]
first [God’s] kingdom and his righteousness” (Mt. 6:33).
In The Divine Conspiracy, Dallas Willard translates that
verse this way: “Place top priority on identifying and
involving [yourselves] in what God is doing and in the
kind of righteousness He has. All else needed is provided.”
This woman had her priorities in order. Her example prods
me to let go of the drive to be a “dynamic Christian” or
“successful businesswoman” in order to spend my life on
what really matters.
God’s Work on Earth
“What God is doing” is what God has always been doing.
Old Testament events and Gospel encounters make it
clear that if the Trinity had a business card, it would read:
redemption, reconciliation, mercy, and justice. I find that
even thinking redemptively is a challenge! I was writing
an article for parents on teens and violence, and the editor
instructed me, “Don’t tell parents how to protect their
kids from violent situations at school. Speak to the topic
redemptively.”
“How?” I prodded.
“Find teens who have turned around a violent person or
situation,” she said.
Teenagers acting as peacemakers? Would I want my teens
to be committed to the message of reconciliation? To be
redemptive? To be anything but safe? After finding someone
else’s teenager who had acted redemptively by urging peace
during a racial disturbance, I confessed to God that I didn’t
want my precious teens doing foolish, redemptive things.
But I also began praying for the strength for both myself
and my kids to want to behave redemptively rather than
choosing the softer, easier path in life.
My Purposes within God’s Work
But what foolish, redemptive things am I called to do? As
I asked God this question in our ongoing conversation,
I saw that the answer would come only from connecting
with God. So day after day I asked God, “What issues of
redemption, reconciliation, love, and justice upset me
yet draw me?” This theme would dictate how I served at
church, what kind of friend I would be, and how I would
shepherd my children.
I’ve seen that practicing justice and mercy is never cut and
dried. I was a wreck inside when one woman asked me to
help her fill out forms to get custody of her baby. As I asked
God for wisdom, it seemed unmerciful to tell this mentally
impaired woman she should not get to care for her own
child. So out of mercy for the mother, I helped her spell
the words in her answers correctly. But out of justice for
the baby, I prayed the child would find a home in a loving
family. These moments of working within my purposes in
life are not easy, but they are when I am most alive.
Listening, Not Lists
Repeated reading of the gospels shows me that Jesus didn’t
live from a list of things to do but from thoughts of people
to love. And those people often interrupted Him. Many
times, our purposes in life are fulfilled in moments etched
only in God’s Daytimer. So I plan my day and make my
lists, but I also listen to God.
Does that sound too subjective? Are you thinking,
Won’t I get out of balance or neglect important matters?
My experience is this: If you practice focusing on God’s
invisible kingdom by spending regular time with Him
in silence and solitude—and reject busyness, hurry,
clutter, and perfectionism—you’ll hear the voice of God
throughout life. God will prod you, remind you, nudge
you, and urge you to love the person you’ve overlooked. He
will make suggestions more practical than anything you’d
ever find in a self-help book. And He will meet your needs
in the process.
Ditching Distractions
The kingdom of God may be within me (Lk. 17:21), but
the American dream distracts me: making a “decent”
living (although I’m rich by global standards), raising
“decent” kids (who have every advantage middle-class
America offers), and living in a “decent” neighborhood
(no overgrown yards).
To live by kingdom purposes, we have to stay tough. Jesus
never made decisions the way we do: Take the job that pays
more; do the ministry that’s most convenient; eat lunch
with the friend who is least taxing; seize the opportunity
that’s most comfortable. Instead, Jesus keeps asking me,
“Jan, what is the redemptive thing? What is the thing I’ve
called you to do?”
Seeking first the kingdom of God means I have to keep
letting go of hurry and busyness to make room for the
conversation with God that never ends. God speaks,
urging me to do foolish, redemptive things. This terrifies
me, so we converse more. I take a deep breath and step out
into a truly Jesus-permeated moment and wonder why I
ever hesitated. Life with God in His invisible kingdom is so
much more engaging than I expected. ©2001.
14 12 Gold Basket/Benevolence
15 13
Gold Basket
For the month of December, we draw your attention to
Good Samaritan Nursing Home. The Home, located in
Shubra, has been operating for 10 years. Care for the
elderly residents is provided by young Egyptians who
have been trained in the Home. The difference between
the Good Samaritan and most of the other geriatric care
facilities in Egypt is that it accepts those elderly that
cannot help themselves and are in need of twenty-four
hour care.
Over the past ten years many elderly people have found
a home in the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Mrs.
Aziza, for example, suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. She
has no children and her husband cannot take care of her
anymore at home. Through her brother, who lives near
the Good Samaritan, she came to live in the Home. At
first she was disturbed and aggressive but, through rest
and cleanliness and the right approach, she has calmed
down.
Another example is Mr. Baraka, who has been in the
home for over one year. Now 87, he used to work as an
airplane technician. After a hip surgery failed, he found
he could no longer do anything himself. His only close
relative, a brother who is old as well, could not give him
the needed care.
The Good Samaritan Nursing Home is dedicated not only
to looking after the physical needs of the elderly, but even
more they desire to provide a shelter to lonely elderly
people who feel cut off from life, meaningful activities,
and family. To be able to continue to provide this care,
the Home needs help to cover its expenses. Life in Egypt
has become very expensive and it is not possible to keep
on increasing the patient fees. Your generous gifts to the
December Gold Basket will bless both the dedicated staff
and the elderly who come to them for shelter and solace.
Benevolence
Sponsorship Program for the Education ofHandicapped
Students
The cost of education for the mentally challenged students is
more than most parents are able to afford. The Maadi Women’s
Guild Benevolence sponsorship program encourages people
to sponsor a child to help meet these costs. A sponsor pays
LE 500 or LE 1000 per semester. The sponsor then receives
a picture and small file of information about the child
sponsored. Contact Trix at vanleeuwen@swissmail.org.
Tooth Brush Promotion
The Maadi Women’s Guild Benevolence committee is
collecting toothbrushes for poor children. Many children at
the clinics we visit don’t brush their teeth because they can’t
afford toothbrushes. You can help alleviate this problem by
donating toothbrushes at the Maadi Women's Guild meetings
or contacting Cathy at 2358-4719. The toothbrushes will
be given to the clinics to distribute to the children needing
them.
Baby Wash
At the Baby Wash, mothers bring their infants for four visits.
The babies are weighed and bathed; inexperienced mothers
learn by observation and instruction when needed. If a
volunteer notices problems, she can provide basic supplies
such as diaper rash cream, or she can send the baby to the onsite
clinic for medical treatment. Each mother also receives
a photo, baby clothes, and a blanket. We need additional
volunteers and a coordinator for next year. Volunteers can
participate weekly or monthly. The time commitment is
minimal, even for the coordinator. For more information,
please contact Tami at 012-235-1215.
St. Andrew's Refugee Ministry Adult
and Children's Education Programs
Enthusiastic volunteers needed to help us teach English and
Computers to adult refugees and a full English curriculum to
the children. We also need qualified individuals to help with
teacher training and curriculum development. Please call
2575 9451 or send an email to st.andrewsrs@gmail.com.
Special Items Needed
Fabric scraps needed for patchwork projects supported by the
encouragement and whatever snacks and gifts we can
provide. Items needed include juice, milk, cookies,
crayons, coloring books, bubbles, flight bags, baseball caps
- anything in quantities of 80 appropriate for children ages
1-18. Also Polaroid film size 600 and Fujifilm "Instax"
Food Page
Super Easy Ultra Healthy
Pasta Sauce
You know that problem with cooking? The fact that you
absolutely love eating, but cooking every day feels like
such a chore and you just run out of ideas?. You know that
you ought to feed your family loads of vegetables and here
in Egypt they are all so available and fresh and delicious
but your children are fussy about courgettes and so it's so
much easier to give them a toasted cheese sandwich and a
raw carrot?
Well this recipe is for those of you like me, who buy lots
of good fresh vegetables at the souq and then get it home
and run out of steam to think what to do with it! It is very
easy and healthy and what’s more, you can even pass it off
as being sophisticated if you serve it with enough elegance
and aplomb.
The only special thing this requires is some kind of food
processor. First of all look in the fridge, what have you
got lurking back there that once
upon a time came from the earth
of “grew upon a plant?”
Ah! An onion, good start, bring it
out and peel it. Garlic? Excellent
throw in a few cloves. Tomatoes?
Yes, yes, yes, these are very
important especially ones that
are just beginning to turn—you
know go a little wrinkly or soft in
the process of losing the bloom
of youth. Courgette (zucchini),
peppers of any kind, especially
if they are elderly. Get them
together and stick them all in
the food processor in a beautiful
party of colour, press the button:
whizz, whizz, whizz at the flick of
a switch, reduce the whole into
finally chopped vegetable mush.
By: Poppy Seed
Now, get a large wide pan, pour in a couple or three
tablespoons of olive oil, heat it up a bit and then plop in
all the vegetable mush, then season: salt: yes, black pepper:
yes, what herbs do you have? Anything vaguely French or
Italian? Pop in some generous pinches, perhaps a stock
cube if you have one but don't worry if you don't, a large
spoon of pesto works very well if you have any. Then bring
it all to sizzling, cover and let it sizzle and cook away,
merrily filling the house with a beautiful aroma. Next, cook
pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water, I always feel
more grown up and sophisticated if I use something like
tagliatelle, way more elegant dinner party like than spag!
If you have meat lovers coming round you could chop up
some beef bacon, grison or turkey ham, you could add any
cold chicken, leftover kofta, anything really, but you don't
have to if you don't feel like it! You could just choose to go
veggie!
Make sure you keep it moist, add
water or extra tomatoes if it gets a bit
dry then serve it with the tagliatelle,
either arrange the pasta in a bowl
and pour the sauce in the middle
so the sauce is in a bowl of pasta or
else mix everything together. Grate
some cheddar or parmesan if you
have any on the top.
Now if you pop it in a dish and
plunk it down on the table it will
look very ordinary. But, if you serve
it with grace, speak in an Italian
accent, arrange the table nicely,
add a green salad and small bread
rolls and murmur words like: fresh,
organic, made from scratch, natural
sauce, basil, Tuscany, Provence,
etc., etc., it genuinely comes across
as quite posh nosh!
24 22 Life Stories
Life Stories 23 25
From Depression to Joy:
The Story of Alice
To meet Alice is to meet a sun burst of joyful energy. Alice
radiates intelligence, humour and quick loving interest in
all around her. She comes from Singapore and has lived in
Cairo for about three years.
The vivacity that fills Alice makes it incredible to believe
that her story is one of freedom from the blackest, most
life-sucking depression imaginable. Alice explains, “For
three years I was visited by depression, along with its
tormentors—unbridled anger, self-hatred, unabated
sorrow, and destructive isolation. I started each morning
with ‘why am I still here, please let me die,’ and ended each
painful night with a plea for release from this existence.”
She goes on to recount how hard it was to raise her beloved
boys from this place of hopelessness, “I lived with mental
anguish so searing and so intense I had to use anger to
fuel my motivation to stay alive. I loved my boys with a
love I never imagined I was capable of. But my depression
distorted the way I showed love to them.”
Depression robbed her of hope so that fear became her
constant. “I would look at my boys and think that they
would be better off in heaven than with me. But a burst
of rationality would take hold of me—what right did I
By: Hazel West
have to take their lives?” Alice felt trapped between an
intense desire to end it all and the need to push on for her
children’s sakes. Fearing insanity, she even became afraid
of being left alone with her boys.
Alice speaks with a quick intensity; the memory of those
days is very real to her: “Eventually, I realised Prozac was
not the answer for me—I needed to return to the Word of
God and I signed up for Bible Study. And thus began my
journey out of the heart of darkness. It wasn’t instant! But
the healing was consistent. I was pursued by a God who
would not let me go into death, because He is the Lord of
abundant life—life to the fullest of joy, peace and love!”
Alice had attended a Christian school in Singapore
and placed her trust in Christ as a sixyear- old child. “I
experienced the goodness of God growing up!” she smiles.
But in her twenties as she began her career, driven by the
desire for success she compromised her relationship with
God. “I sought to be my own master and embraced worldly
systems. I wanted the promises of going to heaven but not
at the cost of obedience to God! Listen to me carefully:
I am not suggesting that depression is caused by one’s
disobedience to God. But in my case my disobedience
opened the door to dark thoughts which led to depression.
My view of God was obscured by lies and when my spiritual
state became corrupted, my mental health faltered.“
In order for Alice to be healed she had to realise that she
had believed lies about herself and God, “For a long time
I thought He was an angry God who was disappointed in
me and depression was his punishment.” Alice continues,
“But slowly I realised God loves to show me love. He is
a God who listens to me when I pray. He is my faithful
Father, and will never abandon me.”
“I remembered one evening I told the Lord: 'The voices are
going to start again!'” Alice would hear voices accusing her
of being a useless mother, fueling her anger and fear and
tempting her to take her own life. “And at that moment,
I felt the Lord in a still quiet voice telling me, 'I am here
with you. You are precious to me. Don’t end your life. If
the enemy of your soul is out to get you and your sons, its
because your lives matter to Me!' I began to recall scripture
verses and these became my weapon against the voices of
despair, Psalm 23 helped me particularly.”
In the years that followed, Alice entered into an empowering
relationship with Father God. It doesn’t mean that life is
easy or that she is not tempted to revisit those places of
despair but she is no longer afraid; “because I know who my
God is. And I know in Christ I am more than a conqueror,”
she confidently states with a huge smile! “How can I ever
lose the fight when I have the King of Kings fighting for
me? His powerful presence soothes me with peace, cheers
me with joy, and sustains me with hope.”
I glance at my watch—a mere 15 minutes late. “Not bad,” I think to myself as 2 large
buses filled with 75 excited teens pull away from the church and head off to . . .
Fall Retreat 2010!
Fall retreat always comes with a bunch of mixed emotions. There are lots of nervous
new kids stressed about who they will room with and whether anyone will talk to
them, as well as incoming 6th graders who are adjusting to their demotion back to
the bottom of the food chain and uncertain of all the social expectations. Of course
most of the bus is filled with kids who have done this fall rite of passage 3-4 times
and can, no doubt, recite the likely menu and all the main games we will play, and
have a bag of tricks up their sleeves for how they can stay awake all night and elude
detection.
The weekend’s theme was “What’s Your Story?” Our speaker, Jonathan Turland
(Director of African Hope Learning Center) reminded us that we all have a story that
God wants to shape and mold for His use and purpose.
I judge the success of such a weekend by the following simple criteria. A) Did I bring
home as many kids as I took with minimal bloodshed? B) Did they know one another
a bit better than when we then left? C) Were they smiling when their mom and dad
picked them up? By that standard it seemed that all had a good time! I do hope and
pray beyond that though. Praying that they absorbed the message that our God is a
God of second chances and that He desires to be involved in their day to day lives,
and I hope that they are more aware of the kids around them and their part in making
our youth group a fun and safe place to be known and cared for.
Other activities we have been up to this last month include painting at African Hope
Learning Center, and Middle School Pirate Night.
Croatian Teenager Wakes from
Coma speaking Fluent German
Not the sort of headline you expect to see a solid publication
like the Maadi Messenger, is it?
Well, the jury is still out on whether this girl in Croatia is
really fluent in German, but certainly her coma affected
her language capabilities! In 2006 an English lady had a
stroke and woke up with a Jamaican accent!
Scientists discovered long ago that different parts of the
brain affect language. Apparently your
left brain deals with grammar and
vocabulary, but your right brain deals
with accents and intonation. Put it all
together and you understand! How
the two sides relate to each other and
their relative dominance makes a
difference to how you learn, especially
languages. The right brain also deals
with your visual spatial abilities, like
map reading and parallel parking—
but more on that later.
Most foreigners in Cairo have
attempted to study Arabic at some
point, with varying degrees of success.
Those who struggle will be comforted
to hear of scientists in Haifa who
have recently discovered that reading
Arabic gives you more brain strain
than other languages. It seems that
because so many Arabic letters vary
by the number of dots above or below reading them is
difficult for the right brain. But the right brain is what we
use to learn something new—so it is badly needed. These
tests were done on Palestinian children learning to read
and write, so if it encourages you at all—reading Arabic is
hard even for native speakers.
The left brain/right brain issue is known to anyone who has
ever studied Arabic. Remember that day when you learnt
a new word, and proudly used it in context, but got odd
looks from the person you spoke to? That is because your
By: Chris Chorlton
left brain remembers the word, but it takes your right brain
a lot longer to ‘hear’ the differences with intonation and
pronunciation. So, you need to have been here a while to
hear and then remember the differences between ‘carrot’
and ‘butcher’ (gzar and gazaar), ‘university’, ‘mosque’ and
‘group’ (gama’ah, gama’a and gamaa’ah)
and of course ‘dove’ and ‘bathroom’
(hammam and hamaam).
But don’t be discouraged—you can
learn to speak basic Arabic and when
you use it, it is really actually quite
good! For example saying “want
bread” in English isn’t really the
height of politeness or grammar. In
Arabic though, it is perfectly correct
and how everyone orders!
Knowing enough Arabic to speak
to the people you encounter in the
street and your neighbourhood will
introduce you to a whole new group
of people. And now I'll let you into a
secret. The friendliness of Egyptians
is often proportional to how much
money they have. In my experience
poor people can be a lot more friendly—but also the least
likely to know a word of English. So if you only use English
your perception of Egyptians is probably tainted by the
sometimes aloof rich—who could talk to you, but would
rather not!
So…back to the maps. When you read
a map do you turn it round to make the
way you are heading face ‘up’? This is a
classic example of more dominant left
brain activity – and often an example
used to highlight differences between
men and women. Unfortunately for us
men, we might be super map readers
and parallel parkers, but our left brain
is also where we process vocabulary.
Girls vocabulary develops more
rapidly than that of boys; by adulthood,
women generally speak almost double
the number of individual words in a
day than men. So, ladies who struggle
with maps, you might have had
trouble finding your way to a good
language school here in Maadi. But at
least you’ll far outshine us guys with your vocabulary skills
when you get here!
Taba Heights
Jewel of the Red Sea
By: Debbie Nell
Photography by: Debbie Nell
I was recently invited to visit Taba Heights, in the Sinai, to get a little taste of what is there and I can tell you one thing, it
is truly a wonderful place to go on vacation. Whatever your interests, there is something for you—whether it is relaxing
by a pool, snorkeling in some of the clearest water in the world, where one can swim with turtles, colorful coral and an
amazing array of fish, quad-biking in the desert canyons, playing golf with a stunning view, parasailing, having a beachside
massage, laying in a hammock, playing volleyball, bocce, you name it, you can do it here.
There are five hotels in Taba Heights, Hyatt Regency, Intercontinental, Marriott Beach Resort, Sofitel and The Three
Corners El Wekala Golf Resort, and they all have different vibes and décor, but all have one thing in common—you, the
customer. Club Med will be opening soon in this resort area as well.
I got a little taste of all five hotels, literally and figuratively and can definitely recommend visiting Taba Heights. There are
numerous restaurants in each hotel covering various cuisine, and there is also a shuttle bus that will take you to any of
the other hotels for you to try their restaurants known as the “Dine Around Program." There are also evening events for
your enjoyment, one of which I really would like to attend next time I go; at Intercontinental, they have lamb on a spit
on the beach with the Bedouins, definitely something I am looking forward to experiencing. At the Marriott, we were
spoiled with a Bedouin evening with individual barbecues, belly dancing and sheesha.
The hotels also offer day trips to the neighboring countries, Jordan and Israel as well as day trips inside Egypt. I was also
pleased to find out that there is a little shopping area, including a mobile phone shop, grocery store, pharmacy, bank,
as well as some souvenir shops. All five of the hotels in this region have Kids Clubs so you can relax while your kids are
being looked after. There are also numerous playgrounds for the children. The Marriott hotel has a quiet area separate
from the pool area which is meant to be a peaceful sanctuary, with beautiful trees and flowers— definitely a welcome
escape from the noise of Cairo!
Egypt Air now has flights to Taba once a week—it was actually quicker to fly to Taba than to get to the airport from
Maadi. Visit their website at www.tabaheights.com, and make a reservation today—the weather is still beautiful there
and I think that November through March are probably the best times to go as it will still be warm, but not as blistering
hot as it was when I went in July.
A Pious Pirate,
a Patriot and Other Art
Thieves
Mona Lisa in the Hands of a Patriot
Another theft, this time with patriotic motivation, was committed by Vinzento
Peruggia, an Italian, who in 1911 managed to leave Louvre Museum with
Leonardo da Vinci’s famed “Mona Lisa” hidden under the white artists smock
which was supposed to hide his real identity. Peruggia kept the painting in his
Paris apartment and two years later moved it to his apartment in Florence, Italy.
The “Mona Lisa” was only discovered when Peruggia contacted Alfredo Geri,
the owner of an art gallery in Florence. Police hearings revealed that the thief
was actually expecting a reward for returning the famous Italian painting to its
homeland.
Just a Practice…
"Don't worry, we're the police. This is just a practice," said two men to tourists
visiting Scotland's Drumlanrig Castle in 2003. On that day, the security alarms
didn’t work and everybody calmly watched “Madonna with the Yarnwinder,”
Leonardo da Vinci’s painting worth $65 million, being taken away from the
castle. Drumlanrig Castle houses one of the finest private art collections in the
United Kingdom and also contains masterpieces by Rembrandt and Holbein.
The painting was recovered four years later.
By: Ati Metwaly
Last August the theft of a Van Gogh painting, “Poppy Flowers,” worth $55
million from Cairo's Mahmoud Khalil Museum added to the number of art
thefts around the world. Fortunately, the painting has since been recovered.
Thefts of works of art normally have financial motives, but they can also include
patriotic or pious elements. An awkward demonstration of piety was the case of
Hans Memling's (a Dutch painter) triptych “The Last Judgment,” which was the
property of Medici’s family. This painting was stolen in 1473 by Paul Beneke, a
“pious” pirate, in order to decorate one of the churches in Danzig, Poland, the
birthplace of Beneke.
Norwegian Scream of Desperation
Some thieves excel not only in criminal skills, but have also very advanced
crudeness. On February 12, 1994, the same day as the opening of the 1994
Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, four men decided to benefit from the time
when all Norwegians were mesmerized by the sports excitement and broke into
the National Gallery. They left a note: “Thanks for the poor security” in the place
of Edvard Munch’s painting, “The Scream,” valued at £50 million. Lillehammer’s
sporty atmostphere was immediately stained with a culture scandal. A few
months later, “The Scream” was recovered, undamaged. However the “scream
story” didn’t end there, as history likes to repeat itself. A decade later, on August
22, 2004, another version of “The Scream” was stolen, this time from the
Munch Museum in Oslo. The thieves also took “Madonna”, another of Munch’s
paintings. Two years later, police recovered both paintings which unfortunately
were considerably damaged and had to undergo some restoration.
5 Days, 6 Paintings, 2 Locations
On February 10, 2010, three armed men broke into The E.G. Buehrle Collection
(one of the most important private collections of 20thcentury European art) and
stole four paintings by impressionist masters: Van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas and
Monet. This robbery is considered to be the biggest one in the history of Europe.
The total estimated value for Cézanne's “Boy in the Red Waistcoat,” Monet's
“Poppy Field at Vetheuil,” Edgar Degas’ “Ludovic Lepic and his Daughters” and
Vincent van Gogh's “Blossoming Chestnut Branches” is $163 million.
It was the second art theft in Zurich in five days. On February 6, 2010, two
Pablo Picasso paintings, "Tete de Cheval" ("Head of Horse") and "Verre et
Pichet" ("Glass and Pitcher"), worth $4.5 million, were stolen from a nearby
cultural center. On February 18, 2010, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh
paintings were recovered, but the Cézanne and Degas canvases remain missing.
To date, the Picassos have not yet been recovered.
auto-immune diseases and skin conditions, e.g. eczema.

Exercise and nutrition both play an important role in
alleviating stress symptoms.
When we are under pressure or stress, our nervous
system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones,
including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse
the body for emergency action, our heart beats faster,
blood pressure rises, we may begin to sweat, and we may
breathe harder. If our bodies are not used to those changes
(pressure or stress), we tend to have a tough time thinking
and managing the pressure. When we are energetic, the
same changes in our bodies take place. If we are active,
our bodies get practice dealing with the increased heart
beats, breathing, etc. Also, the more fit a person is, the
more action is needed to make these changes in the body.
Therefore, when a person becomes stressed, a fit body is
not going to react as radically as an unfit body. A better
mind and capability to handle stress will increase work
performance.
