9 Decommissioning of <strong>Dam</strong>s<br />

The site should be reinstated and revegetated to a stable condition. Care should be taken<br />

to make sure that no material (usually silt) can be washed downstream or affect other<br />

dams.<br />

9.3 Maintenance of Site Until Stable<br />

A dam owner needs to check that the following questions can be answered to the<br />

satisfaction of the Licensing Authority:<br />

• Has due consideration been given to maintaining protection to safety of persons or<br />

property during abandonment works?<br />

• Is the abandoned dam likely to become a future public hazard?<br />

• Is there an environmental plan for re-instatement and/or regeneration of the<br />

inundated area?<br />

• Have inundation area and waterway erosion control measures been considered for<br />

the interim period until regeneration occurs?<br />

• Has consultation with environment authorities been undertaken and are proposed<br />

plans acceptable?<br />

• Can the dam site and inundated land be disposed of economically?<br />
