The ceramic tile industry of 

Spain 

It is no secret that Spain has a long and brilliant tradition in ceramics, 

pioneering new techniques for centuries. Although today’s industry 

has its origin in this noble artisan tradition, the process has evolved 

over the last 30 years into a leading high-tech business with great 

success in today’s world markets. 

The majority of ceramic tile plants (95% of the production) are located 

in Castellón, a privileged province in the Spanish Mediterranean 

coast. It constitutes an industrial cluster that integrates not only tile 

manufacturing, but also all types of related industries and activities 

such as glazes and chemical engineering, machinery for ceramics, 

design services, R&D, etc. It is a very dynamic business community 

in constant evolution. 

With 663 million sq.m., Spain is the fi rst tile producer in the European 

Union, representing 41.7% of its production. In 2006 total sales were 

to 4.21 billion euro or 5.78 billion $. Exports amounted to 2.18 billion 

euro or 2.99 billion dollars, that is, more than half of the industry’s 

sales were made abroad. Being present in 181 countries, Spain is 

one of the largest ceramic tile exporters in the world, representing 

19.26% of the global ceramic tile trade. 

ASCER 

ASCER, the ceramic tile manufacturers’ association of Spain, 

represents 201 member companies, that is, 98% of the national 

production. Its target is to support, represent and promote the 

general and common interests of the ceramic tile sector, providing a 

wide set of services to its members, as well as supporting sustainable 

competitive advantages within the industry. Most ASCER’s activities 

are oriented by the convenience of joint actions where companies, 

separately, would obtain an inferior result.

TILE OF SPAIN 

As the voice of the industry, ASCER promotes ceramic tiles through 

the collective brand “Tile of Spain”. This is a joint effort of the members 

of ASCER, with the support of the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade 

(ICEX). While every tile producer promote and market their brands 

individually like any company, “Tile of Spain”, represents, as an origin 

mark, their common values such as the choice of excellent raw 

materials and the highest possible quality standards. 

The promotional campaign is designed to increase awareness of the 

excellence and benefi ts of ceramic tiles of Spain through different 

ways. Trade shows are an important piece of the campaign, and 

the presence in major exhibitions like Cevisama, Coverings, Cersaie 

or Mosbuild is a good example. But there is also an advertising 

campaign in international design and architectural magazines, the free 

magazine Ceraspaña, editor junkets to Cevisama in Spain, and an 

ambitious program of educational seminars both for the specifi cation 

and the distribution segments. 

Spain’s bathroom equipment 

industry 

The Bathroom Equipment sector includes a number of sub-sectors 

that coalesce as they all use the same routes to market and exhibit 

at the same fairs. In general terms, what we mean by Bathroom 

Equipment is all those products that can be used in a bathroom 

except for ceramic tiles. There is nonetheless a distinction to be 

made between those that are consumer goods and those that are 

industrial goods. 

The various sub-sectors that make up the Bathroom Equipment 

industry number some 400 manufacturers all together. Around 

30% of these are engaged in exports and are located in Spain’s 

Mediterranean coastal areas, specifi cally in the Comunidad Valenciana 

and Catalonia. 

The industry has become tremendously dynamic in recent years and 

Spain’s exports of bathroom Equipment are turning into a global role 

model. 

ASEBAN 

ASEBAN is the Spanish Association of Bathroom Equipment 

Manufacturers. It has 100 member companies around the country 

and from sub-sectors that are closely linked to the world of bathrooms 

such as bathroom accessories, baths and showers, sanitary ware, 

taps, fi ttings, bathroom furniture, washbasins, lighting for bathroom 

furniture and plumbing.

of bathroom equipment, as indeed is CERSAIE.

Spain´s ceramic tile industry 

at Cersaie 2007 

Around 90 ceramic tile manufacturers will be exhibiting their latest 

series and collections at Cersaie 2007, showing the entire world 

the top designs produced by the Spanish industry for the coming 

seasons. 

Practicality, differentiation and innovation are the defi ning features of 

today’s Spanish tile industry. The major investments in R&D undertaken 

by the sector in recent years have turned ceramic tiles into the ideal 

choice for all types of surfaces and settings, guaranteeing results of 

an extraordinarily high standard that are both practical and attractive. 

The sector is also at the forefront of all the very latest trends, and 

is capable of meeting even the most demanding ergonomic and 

environmental criteria. 

The use of ceramic tiles on ventilated façades, raised fl oorings, lattice 

façades and walls, industrial zones, large format designs and the 

production of ceramic tiles specially adapted for the disabled, or 

which are inspired by other materials such as natural stone, wood 

or steel, are just a few of the new ideas that the Spanish ceramic tile 

industry has come up with that have revolutionised the construction 

sector. 

Other even more exciting and original innovations include piece 

bending techniques, dry laying, surfaces with magnetic properties, 

elastic fl oor tiles, concealed joints or intelligent ceramic tiles. This 

latter product, which has only recently been launched on the market, 

allows for interaction with various elements in the building simply by 

touching the corresponding drawing. The principal functions this 

feature offers, which can also be written in Braille, include the control 

of window blinds, lighting and heating systems, thereby allowing for 

the creation of personalised settings. 

In conclusion, Spanish tiles are highly versatile, and are of particular 

interest thanks to their capacity for adapting to any surface and 

combining with other materials. The large number of colours, 

shapes, formats and textures currently available has considerably 

extended the range of possible applications, making them the ideal 

architectural and design solution for exteriors and high traffi c areas 

as well as for interiors.

Spain´s bathroom 

equipment at Cersaie 2007 

5 exporters of bathroom equipment from Spain will be exhibiting 

at the upcoming CERSAIE, showing their new products and latest 

collections. 

There is currently a plethora of designs that can be used to plan 

a bathroom in a classic or cutting edge style, with a rustic look or 

minimalist stylised shapes, with echoes of the past or in line with the 

most contemporary styles and where health and relaxation go hand 

in hand. 

Furniture 

Furniture is an essential part of any bathroom as it resolves the 

problem of storage in a room that needs to be tidy and hygienic. 

There are many designs available on the market that have been 

conceived to fi t in with all styles of bathroom: rustic designs with 

items made of wrought iron and wicker, wooden structures that 

can re-create classical spaces and items made of steel for more 

contemporary rooms. 

Shower screens 

There are a number of pointers as to the way ahead for the next few 

years in the fi eld of shower screens. Just as in other sectors the 

trends as regards design and materials used in the bathroom industry 

refl ect various social, economic, technical and other factors. 

Hydrotherapy Baths 

The growing impact of SPA baths and the new “Wellness” concept 

as synonymous with wellbeing in our society has changed the focus 

of bathroom design and out of this, of course, has come its main 

feature: the hydrotherapy bath. 

Taps 

As with any other product, tap design is changing, perhaps because 

people are looking for change within archetypal models of taps or 

for alternatives to what is available in the marketplace, or maybe 

the intention is to create a new need amongst consumers. What is 

certain is that the change has been at once radical – a move towards 

rectilinear shapes – and conservative – viz the minimalist cylindrical 

shapes. 

Washbasins and baths 

There is a growing trend in washbasins and baths for developing 

global, integrated products and solutions that appeal to different 

types of consumer. One ongoing objective is to add new lines of 

product and offer solutions to different markets. 

Bathroom accessories 

Every year changes, trends and new developments emerge in the 

fi eld of bathroom accessories that are directly linked to fi xtures, 

fi ttings and furniture. The trends we are seeing at the moment are 

towards impact, volume and multifunctional designs, in other words 

items that perform several functions.
