10 - Viva Lewes

When we first moved to Lewes, we would go religiously
every Saturday to a place which sold what we
regarded as the best sausage and bacon baguettes.
When that place shocked us by changing hands,
we resorted to making our own at home. Every
Saturday.
So sampling the locally sourced offerings from
Moveable Feasts, Erika Pratt’s food wagon at the
Lewes monthly market, had a lot of emotional
memory riding on it. And, let’s deliver the good
news up front, it didn’t disappoint.
With the sausages and bacon frying away, and
sweetly caramelising onion, baps piled high and
proper condiments up front, the initial impression is
strong. Choice of white or brown rolls, right amount
of crispiness on the bacon, sausage arrayed with
tomato sauce, we were quickly provisioned.
We had planned to carry them napkin-bound to the
Railway Land and breakfast there, but too tempted
we simply found the nearest bench and tucked in.
And the result transported me back to our first days
in Lewes – and forward to a long run of similar days
ahead, munching away and watching the market
spring into action.
We now also had an 8-year-old food critic in tow
– originally a sausage man like me, now a bacon convert
– whose comments have been known to make or
break an establishment. His verdict: “the best bacon
sandwich ever”.
Moveable Feasts also cater at Lewes FC – one of very
few non-league ground to offer stilton burgers, we
imagine – and are shortly to introduce to the Pan
that staple of the terraces, the pie. MyPy indeed. RR
