Pelham House
We are enthralled by Alex
Bamford’s long exposure
photographs, which seem to
turn even the most familiar
Sussex land and seascapes
into visions of another world.
Shooting mostly at night by
the light of a full moon, Alex
exposes for periods of three
to ten minutes. His favourite
subjects include capturing
movement and abstraction
with artificial light and soft
seas interrupted by hard,
architectural lines. Also check
out the work of two playful
visual storytellers: paintings
with a flash of Dubuffet by John
Harmer and characterful papier
mâché sculptures by Emily
Warren. Aug 25th-4th Oct
Print Room
Although the Print Room
on North Street isn’t strictly
a gallery, they do have some
high-calibre graphic artists
exhibiting, often working in
print-based media and collage.
Throughout August it’s the
turn of Maria Rivens, who
creates detailed, fantastical
narratives from found images
gleaned from a cornucopia of
sources. Rivens, who trained in
3D design at Brighton in the
eighties, is also a professional
jeweller, and manages to inject
depth into paper collage. Hers is
a hallucinatory dreamworld that
alternates between technicolour
nightmare and high camp. We
like it a lot.
Hop Gallery
George Robertson’s remarkable
oil paintings show the
mysterious details hidden in
the Sussex landscape. Taking a
close eye to the edges, he reveals
abstract forms and elegant lines
among simple hedgerows. Also
at the Hop during Aug is the
finale of the Open Exhibition of
works by 60 Sussex artists (until
Aug 7th), and a solo show by
last month’s cover artist Nick
Orsborn. Like Maria Rivens,
Orsborn works equally well
as a jeweller and watercolour
artist. In his signature, almost
impossibly cheerful palette,
Orsborn’s dances, holidays,
parades and parties tell stories
infused with light humour.
