Where to go next? There are all sorts of un<strong>us</strong>ual
spaces to choose from. The B<strong>us</strong> Station, for
example, exhibiting a multi-media show of
work by the likes of Rachael Plummer, Sara
Grisewood, Mark Hewitt and Laurence
Galpin. The Former Cramps Butchers
Shop, on Market Street, which will be showing
photographs by Sarah Weal and Catherine
Benson, taken inside Harveys Brewery. The
Brewers Arms, showing T.A.T.E Lewes,
showcasing the work of the Paddock Wednesday
Evening Group. And the Elephant and Castle,
juxtaposing the art of established 50-something
fine artist Peter Messer, with acrylic works by
his 11-year-old protegé Ashley Carter.
In July we helped organise the massive Artists
United exhibition, in the Foundry; the other
side of a similar coin is an exhibition of old
photographs and memorabilia concerning Lewes
FC, celebrating their 125th anniversary in
September. The Rook Inn at the Dripping Pan
is the venue for the show: the bar will be open for
drinks and refreshments.
The Café at the Needlemakers, meanwhile, is
the venue for the latest exhibition of the Paddock
Printers. You may remember the group’s joint
exhibition on Tom Paine, last year, or on ‘The
High Street’ the year before. This time round
they’ve turned their attention to the footsteps
of Gideon Mantell: the series of prints is called
Round the Block and has been made into a
calendar and book.

For many, though, Artwave is about wandering
around artists’ ho<strong>us</strong>es, and no tour is complete
without a visit to rising star Jessica Zoob’s place
on De Montfort Rd. Other homes that sound
worth a visit are 20 Dorset Rd, where mother and
daughter Meryl and Alison Stringell exhibit
their mix of oils, assemblages and silver jewellery
and, in the most imaginatively titled show in
the festival, there is work from four different
artists, including Rowan Hannay’s mixed media
abstracts, in Wave from the Hill! at 17 Chapel
Hill. As we say, read the brochure for much,
much more. There’s enough out there for threeweekends-worth
of entertainment.
All that doesn’t leave <strong>us</strong> much room to round up
other art events going on in Lewes in September,
but we’ll do our best. We’re particularly taken
by the sound of an exhibition in Lewes Ho<strong>us</strong>e,
Immagini e Memoria featuring photographs
taken in Rome by Father Peter Paul Mackey
between 1891 and 1901, previo<strong>us</strong>ly exhibited
in the Sir John Soane M<strong>us</strong>eum in London.
Where’s the Lewes connection, you might ask?
Mackey was friends with former Lewes Ho<strong>us</strong>e
owner Ned Warren and there are images of him
with Rodin taken on the balcony of Warren’s
flat in Rome. The last day of the exhibition,
on September 11th, coincides with National
Heritage Day, and there will be a guided tour of
the historic ho<strong>us</strong>e, and the stable block where the
French sculptor’s The Kiss was stored for some
years.
