This month’s winning photo was shot by the talented David Stacey, and is a homage to David’s favourite
photographer, Bill Brandt. Brandt was born in Hamburg, but made England his home in the 30s. He is most
famo<strong>us</strong> for his black and white nudes, but he successfully practised many different genres of photography, including
landscape. You can find Brandt’s depiction of this very scene (Cuckmere River, S<strong>us</strong>sex 1963) on google,
or in a number of collections of his work: David has tried as closely as possible to take his shot from the same
position. “I took a copy of Brandt’s picture with me on my phone so I could check the compostion,” he tells <strong>us</strong>.
“It isn’t perfect, but my camera/lens combination is not the same as Brandt was <strong>us</strong>ing. I <strong>us</strong>ed a Pentax K10d
(I’m not sure but I think Brandt <strong>us</strong>ed a Rolleiflex and then cropped down from the square format). My version
is more tonal than Brandt’s very stark and graphic image.”
David is exhibiting this photograph and a selection of others, alongside the paintings of his wife Dawn, at his
home during Artwave. The show, at 14 Toronto Terrace, will be open on all three weekends of the Festival, from
11am-5pm.
