AYP Alumnus Takes Center Stage
An Interview with MGMT Guitarist James Richardson
A lumnus James Richardson (AYP, 1997—2001, french horn) reminisces on his
days in the orchestra, and gives readers a glimpse into his current rock star life as
guitarist with MGMT, a band pegged as the “Artist to Watch in 2008” by Rolling Stone
magazine, and winner of “Best New Band” at the 2009 NME Awards.
How old were you when you began music, and what instrument did you play? “I was
always messing around on the piano for as long as I can remember. I started piano les‐
sons when I was five or six; that was my first ʹseriousʹ instrument.”
Vivace! 2008-2009 Season
Noteworthy Performances
T he American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras (AYPO)
began the 2008‐2009 concert season with gusto on
November 9th with Celebrations featuring the American
Youth Philharmonic ® and guest conductor James
Fellenbaum. Luis Haza stepped into the role of guest
violinist, performing John Williams’ “Schindler’s List” to a
full house at George Mason University’s Center for the
Arts.
In December AYPO’s youngest musicians, the American
Youth String Ensemble, celebrated Winter Magic by
performing popular pieces such as “Fantasia on
Greensleeves” and “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. For
the latter, Luis Haza narrated the favorite tale while
stockings hung from each music stand with care.
After a long winter break, the Philharmonic reemerged on
February 8 th at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall,
offering complimentary tickets for all youth ages 18 &
under, and promising a Spanish‐inspired Colores de España
concert. Pianist Orlando Alonso joined the ensemble for
Manuel de Falla’s “Nights in the Garden of Spain”.
(“AYPO Music Director” continued from page 1)
program into a formidable organization, improving mu‐
sician quality year after year and steering the organization
with his clear artistic vision. Today AYPO is
regarded as one of the finest youth orchestra
programs in the nation with a stellar reputa‐
tion for excellence and distinction, and we
thank Maestro Haza for his years of dedica‐
tion and devotion in building this institution
into what it is today.
Over the years, Maestro Haza shaped the
lives of thousands of young people, so much
so that he often jokes that no matter where
he travels in this world, he always runs into
AYPO alumni. Countless numbers of alums
always recall their time as a musician in the
program, working and learning from Haza, with great
pride and nostalgia. AYPO looks forward to continuing
and building upon Maestro Haza’s legacy by passing the
Later in the month on Feb. 22 nd (same time, same place!) the
American Youth Concert Orchestra, led by J.D. Anderson,
and the American Youth Symphonic Orchestra, led by
Carl J. Bianchi, welcomed tuba aficionado Kevin Stees to
the stage. Stees brought Edward Gregson’s contemporary
“Tuba Concerto” to life while accompanied by the full
sound of the Symphonic Orchestra.
For the springtime concerts, AYPO featured several of its
own musicians. On March 15 th at the Ernst Cultural
Community Center of Northern Virginia Community
College, the String Ensemble highlighted the Principal
musicians for Hofeldt’s Soaring Spirit. On April 19 th at
George Mason University Center for the Arts, the
American Youth Philharmonic proudly accompanied its
Concertmistress violinist, Marina Aikawa, for a rousing
performance of Edward Paganini’s “Violin Concerto No. 1
in D major”. Aikawa, who will be attending the Juilliard
School this fall, was adorned in a flowing turquoise dress
and had the poise of a professional, bringing the audience
to its feet for several standing ovations.
Bravo to all of AYPO’s talented musicians; we will see you
at the final concerts of the season on May 9 th , 10 th , and 31 st !
baton on to the next Music Director in a smooth and
seamless transition.
With the help of Luis Haza, AYPO began the extensive
search for a new Music Director in September
2008. The process of searching for Haza’s suc‐
cessor has been a thrilling and enlightening
process, with more than 95 applicants from
throughout the United States and beyond. The
Search Committee has been working hard to
narrow down the selection pool of candidates
to those who are best qualified and suited to
continue and build the musical excellence of
the AYPO program. Be the first to hear who
the final candidates are by attending the An‐
nual Parent Meeting on Monday, May 11,
2009, 7:00pm at Kilmer Middle School in Vi‐
enna, Virginia—we will be making a special announce‐
ment then about the finalists. And, as always, stay tuned
for more details through the Vivace e‐newsletter and on
the AYPO website!

Education & Outreach in the Community
Bringing Music to the Schools
This season, 25 AYPO musicians mentor 36 young students at public schools throughout the region, as part of the Music
Buddies Mentorship Program. The musicians are matched with students who
demonstrate a talent and desire to learn more on their instrument, but do not
necessarily have the means to receive private lessons. Over 1,000 lessons are given to
the students throughout the school year, culminating in a Showcase Recital in June.
students and a way to achieve goals on a weekly basis.
One school in particular consistently hosts and supports the Music Buddies program
since the program’s inception ten years ago. Luther Jackson Middle School, located
in Falls Church, serves a highly diverse community in Northern Virginia and encour‐
ages music education for its students. This season, there are four mentors teaching
eight students every week on the violin, viola, cello and trumpet. Sometimes students
risk falling behind or losing interest in their instruments all together; the Music Bud‐
dies program not only encourages musicianship, but provides a role model for the
Another way of bringing music to schools is through a “run‐out” concert— a community concert that gives AYPO the
opportunity to share orchestral music with people who are not already a part of the regular audience. These concerts
also provide young musicians an educationally enriching experi‐
ence and bolsters their confidence by repeating a performance of
works they have rehearsed for many weeks. Every year AYPO
partners with a local public school to provide such a concert for its
students. On March 13, 2009, the American Youth String Ensemble,
led by Cheri Collins, visited Spring Hill Elementary School in
McLean, Virginia. The string ensemble performed for an audience
of more than 300 fourth and fifthgraders, and were joined by
Spring Hill musicians to perform a side‐by‐side concert of Del
Borgo’s Sinfonia in G and Spata’s Agincourt.
Chamber Music Heard Around the Town
During the 2008‐2009 season, AYPO formed a relationship with two local senior centers providing five free perform‐
ances for their residents. The outreach performances reached more than 125 seniors, many of whom are physically un‐
able to attend AYPO concerts. The Lincolnia Senior Center in Alexandria,
Virginia, hosted the Room 40 Quartet (pictured left) on April 5 th and the
Duchess Duo, comprised of violins, on April 11 th . The Sunrise Assisted
Living of Fairfax hosted five ensembles this spring: the Kong Quartet, Muse
Quartet, Fantastic Three cello trio, the Forrest Quintet and Quintet Con
Fuoco. Each season, the chamber ensemble performances reach more than
3,000 audience members from the community. This year, ensembles per‐
Vivace! 2008-2009 Season
What is your favorite memory from your days with AYPO? “My favorite memories with AYP might be from the
year we attended the National Youth Orchestra Festival in Sarasota, Florida. We got to meet
friends from other youth orchestras, mix up and play in different ensembles with each
other. We were very proud to represent AYP and there were some great conductors there.”
What has been your most memorable moment with MGMT to date? “My most memorable
moment with MGMT was probably opening for Radiohead in Manchester. Coming onstage in
front of a sold out arena crowd and seeing your heroes on the side, ready to watch you perform,
was pretty indescribable. We got a glimpse of what it is like to be on that level, where youʹre
playing to fifty thousand people every night.”
What is your role in MGMT? Give us a glimpse into the personality of the band and its
James Richardson, 2001 members. “My role in MGMT is guitar player. Andrew and Ben are the two founding members
of the band and they made the first album before the other three of us (guitar, bass, drums) joined the band. Weʹre all
going to contribute and cooperate on the new record, though. Iʹd say that weʹre all pretty easy going, fun loving people,
and we donʹt take things too seriously. We are all kind of geeky and appreciate the same things.”
What inspires you as a musician? “I find inspiration to play music everywhere around
me. For me, music is connected to everything in life; itʹs part of my world view. Music is
my main means of expression, and my main purpose in life, so I canʹt go without it.”
How has your classical training helped you with your current career path? In what
ways? “My classical training helps me today in so many ways. It would be impossible to
think of playing music without it. For one thing, it makes communicating about music so
much easier. The other guys in the band are trained musicians so I can say stuff to them
like, ʺCould you clean up that dotted rhythmʺ, or ʺI think we should bring out the seventh
hereʺ, instead of being vague. But much more than that, studying classical music has en‐
Richardson performing
live with MGMT
riched my understanding of all music; knowing the history of how harmony developed gives
every chord new meaning, and thereʹs a lot of counterpoint going on in our music too. For me,
learning about all different kinds of music and comparing them with each other helps me under‐
stand and appreciate both kinds more than I ever could if I had stuck to just one.”
What advice would you give to AYPO musicians interested in continuing with music? “I
would encourage AYPO musicians to keep on with their musical education after high
school. Even if you donʹt go on to major in music, there are still so many opportunities to study
and play. Take music classes and get involved in ensembles. College is such a great opportunity
to find other musicians and learn, and it gets harder to do when youʹre out of school, so defi‐
nitely take advantage while you can. The other piece of
advice I would give is to always stay open to new and dif‐
ferent opportunities, stay in touch with all your old friends, and always keep the
attitude that anything is possible with music, because you never know what might
happen. So many great things can happen if you stay involved.”
forum at www.myspace.com/mgmt. The band will be touring this summer throughout the
United States, including a sold‐out performance on July 1st in Brooklyn, New York.
AYPO Annual Report: Financial Review, 2007‐2008
I n the 2008 fiscal year, AYPO received income from 7 main sources. 53% of AYPOʹs total income was from tuition,
and substantial non‐tuition sources included grants (19%), ticket sales (11%), and donations (8%). AYPO’s expenses
for the year were predominantly program related — 68% of the organization’s expenditures went straight back to the
four orchestras, the chamber program,
the Music Buddies mentorship pro‐
gram, and other outreach activities.
The remaining 32% covered the or‐
