CHAPTER 6.<br />

BUREAU OF LABOR.<br />

SECTION 881. Expenses—inspectors—duties <strong>of</strong> woman inspector.<br />

1 One <strong>of</strong> the factory inspectors in the bureau <strong>of</strong> labor statistics shall<br />

2 be a woman, who shall, in addition to the general duties required <strong>of</strong> her,<br />

3 under the direction <strong>of</strong> the commissioner <strong>of</strong> the bureau <strong>of</strong> labor statis-<br />

4 tics, inspect the sanitary and general conditions under which the<br />

5 women and children are at work in all factories, workshops, hotels,<br />

6 restaurants, stores, and any other places where women and children<br />

7 are employed ; collect statistics and make recommendations and report<br />

8 the same to the commissioner <strong>of</strong> labor, who shall make special reference<br />

9 thereto in his biennial report to the governor, and said woman factory<br />

10 inspector shall render any other or additional service under the direc-<br />

11 tion <strong>of</strong> the labor commissioner as will tend to promote the health and<br />

12 general welfare <strong>of</strong> the women and children employees <strong>of</strong> this state. The<br />

13 appointment, by the commissioner <strong>of</strong> all factory. inspectors shall be<br />

14 subject to the approval <strong>of</strong> the executive council. Said commissioner<br />

15 shall be allowed the necessary postage, stationery and <strong>of</strong>fice expenses.<br />

16 The said salaries and expenses shall be paid as the salaries and<br />

17 expenses <strong>of</strong> other state <strong>of</strong>ficers are provided for. The commissioner or<br />

18 , any <strong>of</strong>ficer or employee <strong>of</strong> the bureau <strong>of</strong> labor statistics shall be allowed<br />

19 in addition to his salary his actual and necessary traveling expenses<br />

20 while in the performance <strong>of</strong> his duties, said expenses to be audited by<br />

21 the state board <strong>of</strong> audit and paid out <strong>of</strong> the general fund <strong>of</strong> the state<br />

22 upon a voucher verified by the commissioner or his deputy; but the<br />

23 total amount <strong>of</strong> the expenses for the <strong>of</strong>ficers and employees <strong>of</strong> said<br />

24 bureau other than the salaries shall not exceed four thousand dollars<br />

25 per annum.<br />

SEC. 888. Conditions under which children may be employed.<br />

1 No child under sixteen years <strong>of</strong> age shall be employed, permitted,<br />

2 . or suffered to work in or in connection with any <strong>of</strong> the establishments<br />

3 or occupations mentioned in section eight hundred eighty-two <strong>of</strong> the<br />

4 compiled code unless the person, firm or corporation employing such<br />

5 child procures and keeps on file, accessible to any <strong>of</strong>ficer charged with<br />

6 the enforcement <strong>of</strong> this chapter, a work permit issued as hereinafter<br />

7 provided, and keeps two complete lists <strong>of</strong> the names and ages <strong>of</strong> all such<br />

8 children under sixteen years <strong>of</strong> age employed in or for such establish-<br />

9 ments or in such occupations, one on file in the <strong>of</strong>fice and one conspicu-<br />

10 ously posted near the principal entrance <strong>of</strong> the place or establishment<br />

11 in which such children are employed. On termination <strong>of</strong> the employ-<br />

12 ment <strong>of</strong> a child whose permit is on file, such permit shall be returned by<br />
