8 qualify by taking the same oath as his principal, indorsed upon the<br />

9 certificate <strong>of</strong> appointment. The deputy, in the absence or disability<br />

10 <strong>of</strong> his principal, may perform all the duties <strong>of</strong> the principal pertaining<br />

11 to his <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

12 He shall receive a salary <strong>of</strong> not less than fifty per cent <strong>of</strong> that<br />

13 <strong>of</strong> his principal, nor more than fifteen hundred dollars per year, to<br />

14 be fixed by the board <strong>of</strong> supervisors, and in case additional deputies<br />

15 and clerks are needed, the board <strong>of</strong> supervisors may make such allow-<br />

16 anee therefor as they deem reasonable; provided that in counties hav-<br />

17 ing a population <strong>of</strong> fifty thousand or over the salary <strong>of</strong> the first deputy<br />

18 shall be not less than fifty per cent <strong>of</strong> that <strong>of</strong> his principal nor more<br />

19 than seventeen hundred fifty dollars per year to be fixed by the board<br />

20 <strong>of</strong> supervisors and the salary <strong>of</strong> the second deputy shall be not less<br />

21 than fifty per cent <strong>of</strong> that <strong>of</strong> his principal nor more than fifteen hun-<br />

22 dred dollars per year and the salary <strong>of</strong> the third deputy shall be fifty<br />

23 per cent <strong>of</strong> that <strong>of</strong> his principal; provided that in counties having<br />

24 within their limits a city <strong>of</strong> forty-five thousand or over the salary <strong>of</strong><br />

25 the first deputy and second deputy shall be sixty-five per cent <strong>of</strong> that<br />

26 <strong>of</strong> the principal and the salary <strong>of</strong> the third and fourth deputies shall<br />

27 be fifty per cent <strong>of</strong> that <strong>of</strong> the principal and in case additional deputies<br />

28 and clerks are needed the salary <strong>of</strong> such deputies and clerks shall be<br />

29 fixed by the board <strong>of</strong> supervisors ; provided further, that in counties<br />

30 in which the district court is held in two places, the deputy in charge<br />

31 at the place other than the county seat shall receive the same salary<br />

32 as the first deputy in said county. The increases <strong>of</strong> salary granted by<br />

33 the provisions <strong>of</strong> chapter two hundred seventy-eight, acts <strong>of</strong> the thirty-<br />

34 eighth general assembly be and continue in full force and effect until<br />

35 the first day <strong>of</strong> June, nineteen hundred twenty-three.<br />

CHAPTER 6.<br />

JURORS.<br />

SECTION 6990. Who exempt.<br />

1 The following persons are exempt from liability to act as jurors:<br />

2 All persons holding <strong>of</strong>fice under the laws <strong>of</strong> the United <strong>State</strong>s or this<br />

3 state; all practicing attorneys, physicians, veterinarians, registered<br />

4 pharmacists, dentists, and clergymen ; all acting pr<strong>of</strong>essors or teachers<br />

5 <strong>of</strong> any college, school or other institution <strong>of</strong> learning; and all persons<br />

6 disabled by bodily infirmity, or over sixty-five years <strong>of</strong> age; active<br />

7 members <strong>of</strong> any fire company ; and any person who is conscientiously<br />

8 opposed to acting as a juror because <strong>of</strong> his religious faith.<br />
