§ 2104. NEGLECTED AND DELINQUENT CHILDREN. Tit. IX, Ch. 13.<br />

8 <strong>of</strong> their duties. Said chief probation <strong>of</strong>ficer shall receive a salary<br />

9 not to exceed fifteen hundred dollars per annum ; the deputy probation<br />

10 <strong>of</strong>ficers a salary not to exceed twelve hundred dollars per annum, said<br />

11 salaries to be fixed by the judge <strong>of</strong> the juvenile court and to be paid<br />

12 out <strong>of</strong> the county treasury ; provided, that in counties having a popu-<br />

13 lation <strong>of</strong> one hundred twenty-five thousand or over, the judge <strong>of</strong> the<br />

14 juvenile court shall have power to select a chief probation <strong>of</strong>ficer and<br />

15 not exceeding five deputy probation <strong>of</strong>ficers, the chief probation <strong>of</strong>ficer<br />

16 to receive a salary <strong>of</strong> not to exceed three thousand dollars and the<br />

17 deputy probation <strong>of</strong>ficers each to receive a salary not to exceed eighteen<br />

18 hundred dollars.<br />

SEC. 2104. Commitment—financial aid for widowed mother.<br />

1 When any child <strong>of</strong> the age stated in section twenty hundred<br />

2 eighty-nine <strong>of</strong> the compiled code shall be found to be dependent or<br />

3 neglected, within the meaning <strong>of</strong> this chapter, the court may make<br />

4 an order committing the child to the care <strong>of</strong> some suitable state insti-<br />

5 tution, or to the care <strong>of</strong> some reputable citizen <strong>of</strong> good moral character,<br />

6 or to the care <strong>of</strong> some training school, as provided by law, or to the<br />

7 care <strong>of</strong> some association willing to receive it, embracing in its objects<br />

8 the purpose <strong>of</strong> caring for and obtaining homes for dependent and<br />

9 neglected children, which association shall have been accredited as<br />

10 hereinafter provided.<br />

11 If the court finds that the mother <strong>of</strong> such dependent or neglected<br />

12 child is a widow and a resident <strong>of</strong> the county where aid is applied for,<br />

13 and if the court further finds that such mother is poor and unable to<br />

14 properly care for said child, but is otherwise a proper guardian, and<br />

15 that it is for the welfare <strong>of</strong> such child to remain at home, the court<br />

16 may enter an order finding such fact and fixing an amount <strong>of</strong> money<br />

17 necessary to enable such mother to properly care for such child ; and<br />

18 thereupon it shall be the duty <strong>of</strong> the county board <strong>of</strong> supervisors,<br />

19 through its overseer <strong>of</strong> the poor or otherwise, to pay to such mother,<br />

20 at such times as said order may designate, the amount so specified<br />

21 for the care K)f such dependent or neglected child until further order<br />

22 <strong>of</strong> the court. The amount to be paid for the care <strong>of</strong> any such child<br />

23 shall not exceed the sum <strong>of</strong> three dollars per week. Such payment<br />

24 shall cease upon any such child's attaining the age <strong>of</strong> sixteen years.<br />

25 At any time after such allowance is made the overseer <strong>of</strong> the poor,<br />

26 or the board <strong>of</strong> supervisors, may make objections to the continuance<br />

27 <strong>of</strong> such allowance. When such objection is made the court or judge<br />

28 there<strong>of</strong> shall fix a time for hearing and order that notice be given to<br />

29 the person receiving the allowance and at the time fixed the court or<br />

30 judge shall summarily hear and determine the objections made, and<br />

31 may revoke or modify the order for allowance theret<strong>of</strong>ore made and<br />

32 make such further order as shall be just and proper in the premises.<br />

33 The court may, when the health or condition <strong>of</strong> the child may<br />

34 require it, cause the child to be placed in a public hospital or institu-<br />

35 tion for treatment or special care, or in a private hospital or institu-<br />

36 tion which will receive it for like purposes without charge.<br />

37 No child under the age <strong>of</strong> ten years shall be committed to the<br />

38 training school for boys or the training school for girls ; but such chil-<br />

39 dren shall be eligible to admission to the soldiers' orphans' home at
