280 bulletin
Dear Collectors,
Welcome to what is a landmark edition of the Australian
Stamp Bulletin in many ways. It is the fi rst edition since
the Pacifi c Explorer Stamp Expo in April, which I am glad
to announce, was a great success. I would like to thank all
those who attended, volunteered and participated in making
it a wonderful experience, especially for fi rst time visitors.
(Further details and the highlights of Pacifi c Explorer will be
available in the September Stamp Bulletin).
This edition of the Bulletin also marks an exciting and
positive change to the way we will be distributing the Bulletin
in future. As part of our ongoing commitment to meeting
the needs of collectors, from this edition onwards the Stamp
Bulletin will become a quarterly publication. This will mean
that each edition will have a full three months of stamp
issues giving collectors even more notice of upcoming issues.
Further information relating to these changes can be found
on page 17. We trust that you will welcome this innovative
change.
In terms of stamp issues, we continue our program
in June with a new defi nitive international issue, which
includes some of Australia’s best-loved and recognisable
animals. Bush Wildlife is an issue of four stamps and uses an
illustrative design to bring to life these unique Australians. An
Australian Territories issue, also in June, is Cocos (Keeling)
Islands Reef Sharks. The issue is part of our World Wildlife
Fund series with the stamp designs carrying the WWF logo
drawing attention to these much maligned and yet fascinating
creatures.
A defi nitive issue in July is the beautiful Australian
Wildfl owers. We also celebrate the growth and success of the
Australian Wine Industry with a special issue illustrating the
process involved in Australian wine production. Trees are not
just beautiful; they are part of the very system that sustains life
on our planet. The release of the Native Trees issue coincides
with a world congress to be held in Brisbane in August and
the stamps will feature trees from different habitats and parts
of the country, including the notable “dinosaur tree”– the
Wollemi pine.
With best wishes and until next time,

WILDLIFE
INTERNATIONAL STAMPS
Stamps shown 80% actual size
A definitive issue of four new international
stamps will be released to meet the needs
of general postage requirements.
Featuring some of Australia’s diverse
wildlife, the stamp illustrations bring to life
the beauty of these unique Australians in
their natural habitat – the Australian bush.
THE STAMPS
$1.00 Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae)
The Superb Lyrebird inhabits the dense
rainforests and wet sclerophyll forest on
the coastal plain and associated highlands
of south-eastern Australia, from the
Dandenong Ranges in Victoria and around
the vicinity of Brisbane.
Lyrebirds are notable for their courtship
displays in which the male spreads and
vibrates the long feathers of the tail. He
then throws it forward over his head, while
prancing and stamping on a mound which
has been constructed for this purpose.
During courtship the male utters a long,
rambling, complex and extremely varied
song.
$1.10 Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae)
This bird can be found in eucalypt forest
and woodland throughout most of eastern
Australia – from Cape York Peninsula in
Queensland to Eyre Peninsula in South
Australia.
7 June 2005
It has also been introduced to Tasmania,
south-western Western Australia, and New
Zealand. It lives in groups that maintain
permanent territories, announcing
and defending these by means of loud,
rollicking calls uttered in chorus, especially
at dawn and dusk.
$1.20 Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus)
The Koala’s range in eastern Australia extends
from the tropics to the cool temperate south.
Throughout the range the Koala is associated
with the eucalyptus forests that provide
almost its sole diet of eucalyptus leaves.
The Koala has a low energy requirement
compared to most other mammals and is
usually inactive for 20 hours a day. Females
commence breeding when two years old,
producing one young every year.
largest living marsupials, males reaching
around 66 kilograms in weight and females
around 26 kilograms.
Most males are pale red to brick red in
colour and females are usually blue-grey, but
in some areas both sexes are reddish. The joey
stays in the pouch for 235 days after birth,
leaving when it reaches 4 to 5 kilograms in
weight. It continues to suckle for a further
four months, even when a younger sibling
occupies the pouch.
ILLUSTRATION AND DESIGN
Cocos (Keeling) Islands
Reef Sharks
There are around 340 species of sharks
in the world. Sharks live in almost every
marine habitat, at depths from one metre
to beyond 1000 metres. Australian sharks
range greatly in size. The smallest are about
50 centimetres in length, while the largest,
the giant Whale Sharks, might grow to 18
metres.
All sharks are carnivores, feeding on
almost every kind of animal life in the sea.
Many species feed during the day, but most
sharks hunt at night. They have excellent
vision, a keen sense of smell, good hearing
and touch senses with which to detect
their prey. Their highly developed lateral
line system can pick the vibrations of an
injured animal over long distances and they
can detect electrical fi elds around living
animals.
Sharks do not have scales like other fi sh,
but a tough outer covering of skin embedded
with countless minute denticles or teeth.
When the teeth in the jaw become worn or
damaged they are replaced with new ones.
THE STAMPS
50c & $1.00: Blacktip Reef Shark
(Carcharhinus melanopterus )
The Blacktip Reef Shark is the most
commonly seen shark on shallow reef-flats,
often entering subtidal zones to hunt for
parrotfish.
Under most circumstances this species is
not considered dangerous, but if provoked
or cornered, it could bite. It has been known
to strike at the fl ippers of divers snorkelling
in shallow water.
The Blacktip Reef Shark forms small
groups or lives alone in deeper water. It will
usually grow to about one metre in length,
but can achieve a maximum of 1.4 metres.
50c & $1.45: Grey Reef Shark
(Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos )
The Grey Reef Shark is thick-bodied, with
a grey back, white belly and black margins
to the fins. It is the most commonly seen
shark in depths of 10-30 metres in offshore
reefs.

A sleek inquisitive species, it is also a swift
efficient predator, is very territorial and can
be dangerous to divers.
Always curious, it will approach divers
at close range and will attack if provoked or
excited. It lives on fi sh, turtles and crustaceans
and grows to 2.5 metres in length.
This species is sometimes referred to
locally as the Bronze Whaler, the term applied
to several similar species.
AUSTRALIAN
Wildflowers
There are some 18,000 species of flowering
plants native to Australia, grouped in
about 200 families. Like the continent’s
distinctive fauna, the flora has evolved in
isolation for 50 million years, and many
plants and flowers are found nowhere else
on earth.
THE STAMPS
50c Sturt’s Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa )
This prostrate biennial or annual plant
grows in arid regions of the Northern
Territory and all mainland states except
Victoria. The leaves and stems are covered
in downy hairs and the vivid red flowers are
about nine centimetres long and arranged
in clusters of six to eight on short, thick
erect stalks.
The fruit is a legume measuring about
fi ve centimetres long that splits at maturity
releasing several fl at kidney-shaped seeds.
The spectacular fl owers are the fl oral emblem
of South Australia.
50c Coarse-leaved Mallee (Eucalyptus grossa )
A small mallee from three to six metres
high, this eucalypt is distinctive for its
large, thick glossy leaves. The bullet-shaped
buds are red and the attractive yellow to
yellow-green flowers appear in axillary
8
umbels of up to seven from August to
November.
Each of the blooms measure up to four
centimetres in diameter. The tree occurs
naturally south from Salmon Gums, and
westward to the area near Newdegate, in
Western Australia.
50c Common Fringe Lily (Thysanotus tuberosus )
Blooming in spring and summer, this lily
is an erect perennial herb growing up to 60
centimetres high.
The mauve fl owers have three broad,
fi nely fringed petals, in groups of one to
eight at the ends of branched stems up to 80
centimetres long. The plant is widespread in
heath, woodland and open forest and can be
found in all mainland states.
50c Swamp Daisy (Actinodium cunninghamii )
This plant is a small shrub growing up to a
metre in height, with wiry, erect stems. It is
not a true daisy, but belongs to the myrtle
family.
The fl ower heads, around three to four
centimetres in diameter, consist of clusters
composed of white sterile outer fl owers and
fertile smaller pink inner ones. The shrub is
native to low-lying, moist sandy areas in the
south-west of Western Australia.

5 July 2005
The United Nations International Year of
Microcredit is celebrated with the release
of this special pre-stamped envelope.
Microcredit helps alleviate poverty by
providing small collateral free loans for selfemployment
to very poor people, especially
women, throughout the world. Loans from
Australian Wine
Wine production in Australia is a growth
industry. Australia is now the world’s fourth
largest wine exporter – behind France, Italy
and Spain – and the single largest exporter of
wine outside the European Union. Australia
is the number one supplier of wine to the
United Kingdom and number two to the
United States of America.
Approximately 70 per cent of all
Australian grapes come from the inland
regions such as Griffi th and Mildura and
not the more famous regions like the
Barossa, Hunter and Yarra. About 60 per
cent of the total area of wine plantings is
devoted to red varieties, of which shiraz
makes up about a third.
Australia is known for its shiraz – one in
four glasses of wine consumed is a shiraz.
Chardonnay is the most widely planted of
the white-wine grape variety, constituting
almost a third of all white-wine plantings.
While the first vines arrived in Australia in
1788 with the First Fleet, they were not
successful and in the following years many
attempts were made to establish winemaking
ventures.
Notable amongst these was Gregory
Blaxland, who in 1822 shipped 136 litres of
19 July 2005
wine to London where it won a Silver Medal
from the Royal Society of Arts. Five years
later, a larger shipment of 1,800 litres of
Blaxland’s wine won the Gold Ceres Medal.
Vines were planted in the Hunter Valley
in the 1820s and in the Barossa and Yarra
Valleys in the 1840s and 1850s. The Yarra
Valley was the dominant region of the
nineteenth century and by 1890 Victoria
produced almost 60 per cent of Australia’s
wine – more than all other states combined.
However the scourge of phylloxera ruined the
Victorian wine industry in the 1890s.
The Wine Board was established in the
1920s and by the end of WWII, Australia
was producing almost 117 million litres
of wine per year. The primary focus of the
wine industry before the 1950s was fortifi ed
wines. The Rutherglen district of northern
Victoria produced (and still produces) some
of the country’s greatest fortifi ed wines.
In the 1950s refrigeration was introduced to
control fermentation thus providing scope
for standardisation across the different
regions and from year to year.
This, combined with the rapid infl ux
of post-war migrants from Europe, who
brought with them their appreciation of wine
Australian Wine
First day cover
and winemaking skills, pushed the Australian
wine industry into the next phase of growth.
The 1960s saw a shift in preference to red
wines of the fuller-bodied Bordeaux style and
invention of the wine cask (in 1965). The
1970s saw the aromatic wines boom and the
widespread use of the wine cask. By the end
of the 1970s wine preference had changed to
dry white table wines and the Chardonnay
boom began.
The late 1980s saw Australian wine break
into the traditional markets of Europe.
They were, and are, perceived as being clean
and fresh with fruit-driven white styles
and robust reds. This export boom created
a greater demand for our red wines than
the whites, fuelling the start of the red wine
boom – still the trend today.
Wine-grape growing and winemaking are
now carried out in every State and Territory
of Australia. The period between 1990 and
2001 saw Australia emerge as one of the
leading winemaking countries in the world
with approximately 1.5 million bottles of
wine leaving Australia every day, supplying
89 international markets.
The design adopts a photographic approach
illustrating the process of wine production
from growth in the vineyards to the convivial
act of drinking.
The stamps evoke a sense of the tradition
and history in the Australian wine industry
whilst simultaneously creating a sense of
intimacy, recognition and pride. Graphic
motifs – the fence post and wire, bottle and
bottle opener have been used to expand the
narrative.
Native Trees
Trees are not just beautiful, they are a vital
part of the system that sustains life on the
planet. Without trees we have concrete
jungles, deserts or tundras. Among other
things, trees provide shelter from the wind,
shade from the sun, nesting places for birds
and other animals. There have also been
a myriad of economic uses for trees, from
supplying timber for construction and
furniture-making, to railway sleepers and
telegraph poles.
This stamp issue coincides with the 22nd
International Union of Forest Research
Organisations World Congress being held
from 8-13 August 2005 at the Brisbane
Convention & Exhibition Centre. The theme
for the 2005 Congress is Forests in the Balance:
Linking Tradition and Technology.
THE STAMPS
Snow gum (Eucalyptus paucifl ora)
The Snow Gum grows in the highest and
coldest parts of southern Australia, in the
Snowy Mountains, along the tablelands
in southern New South Wales through
Victoria to Tasmania. A small to medium
sized spreading tree, the Snow Gum usually
has a crooked trunk and many branches
with distinctive beautiful smooth green,
grey and cream bark. The bark changes to
the vibrant colours of red, green, pink and
14
orange when wet with rain or snow. The
leaves are glossy, thick and waxy. The Snow
Gum, although called “paucifl ora” meaning
few fl owers, in fact fl owers quite profusely
and frequently with white blooms from
October to January.
A very long-lived species, it is also very
slow growing. It can withstand snow and
ice but is able to grow in diverse areas and is
easily cultivated from seed. It can be used for
windbreaks, shade, fence posts, fuel, honey
and for medicinal purposes.
Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis)
One of the world’s oldest and rarest tree
species, the Wollemi Pine was presumed
extinct until re-discovered near Sydney in
1994. Dubbed “the botanical find of the
century”, akin to finding a living dinosaur,
extensive research is now underway in
order to conserve this ancient species.
Less than 100 mature trees exist in the
wild. Wollemi Pines are members of the
ancient Araucariaceae family, also known
as Monkey Puzzle trees. These are plants of
the southern hemisphere.
Ancient pollen samples show that the
Wollemi Pine, or its near relatives, dominated
the forests of the southern hemisphere for
over 100 million years. Dramatic changes
to the world’s climate about 2 million years
ago led to their demise.

The tree is being propagated for
commercial release in 2005. Royalties
from the sale of the trees will go to the
Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney to fund
conservation efforts.
Boab (Adansonia gregorii)
The Australian Boab is indigenous to the
Kimberley region of northern Western
Australia, where its distinctive shape has
become symbolic of the region. Related
to the Baobab tree of Africa, it is a large
spreading tree up to 15 metres high with
branches that radiate from the top of the
trunk.
The barrel shaped trunk, with its smooth
grey-brown bark, can grow to 20 metres in
circumference. The tree fl owers with large
fragrant white blooms just before the wet
season. The fruit are small to large woody
capsules containing many kidney-shaped
seeds. Aboriginal people carve Boab nuts as
decorative ornaments and traditionally use
parts of the tree for food, medicine, water
supply, fi bre, glue and shelter.
Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor)
In the south-west of Western Australia fine
forests of towering gum trees, known by
their Aboriginal name Karri trees, once
dominated the area. Most of the forests
were cleared for farms and the great trees
became the building materials for cities.
The botanical name for this distinct tree,
Eucalyptus diversicolor, refers to the contrast
in leaf colour. With delicately marbled trunks,
the graceful Karris can grow to great heights,
up 75 metres –the tallest trees in Western
Australia. It is also one of the most important
timbers. Hard, tough and quite durable, it is
used extensively for shipbuilding, flooring,
and telegraph poles.
Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla)
The Moreton Bay Fig is best-known as a
massive tree native to the rainforests of
coastal NSW to northern Queensland.
However it can also take the form of a
strangling vine, depending entirely on
where the germinating seed lands.
If the seed is deposited in the trunk of
another tree and germinates there, its roots
will spread down the trunk of the host tree
which will eventually be strangled. If the seed
lands on the ground and germinates, it will
grow into a magnifi cent tree with thick glossy
leaves with massive buttresses at the foot of its
trunk and huge spreading roots.
Moreton Bay Figs have been cultivated
extensively in public parks and gardens
around the country, where they are valued for
their beauty and their extensive shade. The
buttresses serve as wonderful playgrounds
for children. Many of these old giants have
achieved iconic status.
Australian Stamp Bulletin change
Previously, collectors of the Australian Stamp
Bulletin received five editions each year as follows:
January - February
March - May
June - July
August - September
October - December
From this edition onwards the Australian Stamp
Bulletin will be issued as four editions in line with
the Australian Stamp Explorer and other philatelic
publications around the world.
As a quarterly publication, this will allow for
more stamp issues to be covered well ahead of their
release date, and may even assist some collectors
with postage costs. Each edition will have a full three
months of stamp issues from the Australian philatelic
program. The four editions will run as follows:
January - March
April - June
July - September
October - December
For example, included in this edition is information
relating to stamp issues for August, which normally
would not have been covered until the August/
September Australian Stamp Bulletin.
The fourth and last edition for this year will
include stamp issues for September through to
December. This means you will have information
about the Christmas stamp issue a full month earlier.
From January 2006, the quarterly editions will be
sent to collectors as outlined above. The four editions
will provide more timely information for collectors
each quarter and is part of the ongoing commitment
of the Australia Post Philatelic Group to meet our
customer needs.
Designing Australian Identity
11 June - 14 September 2005
This exhibition presents the work of the 1970s
All-Australian Graffiti graphic design group,
and the more recent flag design concepts
behind Russell Kennedy’s A Vision Unfurled.
Both projects focus on images and icons of
Australian identity. All Australian Graffi ti was
urban, street wise and irreverent. Infl uenced by
American cartoonist Robert Crumb and the
graphics of Monty Python, the group captured
the regional and multicultural elements of the
day and challenged the minimal international
style that was current.
Produce Food! Traditional and contemporary images
of agriculture on Australian stamps
Curated by Gary Corbett and Ann Wookey
There was a time when Australia’s economy and
image“rode on the sheep’s back”. While wool,
wheat and beef were the industry’s traditional
icons, Australian agriculture now produces
such diverse products as wine and bush foods.
This exhibition examines rural and agricultural
themes on Australian stamps and includes the
drawings, photographs and original artworks
used in their design and development.
