American crowd. I was extremely nervous before the start
as it was the first World Cup of the year. I need to learn to
stay more calm. I was pleased with my laser shooting,
however I still need to improve my Run and Swim if I want
to stay at the top”
Silver Medallist Mhairi Spence had a solid day finishing high
up in all disciplines, she said after the event: “In the
Combined Event I had to focus on my running as I could
hear the long legs of Schoneborn behind me. Getting Silver
means a lot to me as I missed out on the World
Championships last year and this is reward for my hard
training.”
Women’s Final
Triple World Champion Amelie Caze (FRA) won the first
ever Gold medal conducted with the new environmentally
friendly laser shooting at World Cup #1 in Rancho Mirage,
USA. Caze led from start to finish and easily held off a fast
finishing Mhairi Spence (GBR) and World #1 Lena
Schoneborn (GER) who recovered from a poor fence to
storm back to clinch the Bronze medal.
Caze dominated the fence and showed class in the ride
which resulted in a 50 second lead going into the Combined
Event which she maintained to the end. Caze said after the
historic gold: “I was very happy with all the support from the
Lena Schoneborn who had a terrible start to the day said: “I wanted to quit after the fencing, I was giving
away unnecessary touches. The day got better after that, I had a good swim and then great ride, and I just
pushed myself really hard in the Combined Event to win the Bronze which I am very happy with.”
made her “absolutely devastated".
World Junior Champion Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) not only
grabbed 4th place but did what no other Women has
done by beating Elodie Clouvel (FRA) in the swim. This
was the platform for her to finish in her highest World Cup
place. After the swim she said “I am very happy to be
better than Elodie for the first time, I had a fantastic
finish.”
Local Favourite Margaux Isaksen who had a fantastic
fence and swim and was on track for a dream medal in
front of her fans tasted disaster in the riding event
missing a jump to drop her back to 23rd position which
Men’s Final
Pavlo Tymoshchenko (UKR) won his first ever World
Cup Gold Medal at World Cup #1 and has also broken
the overall shooting World Record in a remarkable time
of 43 seconds for 15 shots.
He out shot and out ran World #3 Adam Marosi (HUN)
who grabbed silver and the biggest surpr surprise of the day
was World Ranked #174 Mikalai Hayanouski (BLR) who
stormed home to beat his more fancied rivals for
Bronzein a very competitive field in which World #1
Aleksander Lesun (RUS) and Double Olympic
Champion Andrev Moiseev (RUS) could not make th the
final.
2009 World Champion Adam Marosi who had to settle
for Silver after being beaten by Tymoshchenko's
incredible shoot and run said: "Life is great, I love laser
shooting, it makes everything hing much simpler and easier.
I had a disappointing World Championships last year so
I went away and freshened up in the off season and
changed coaches which has improved everything".
In addition to Tymoshchenko's World overall shooting
record for 15 shots, another World Record was also
broken by Michal Michalik (CZE) for one round of
shooting (5 shots) in a staggering 10.7 seconds, this
led to Michalik finishing in 4 th In addition to Tymoshchenko's World overall shooting
ts, another World Record was also
broken by Michal Michalik (CZE) for one round of
shooting (5 shots) in a staggering 10.7 seconds, this
position, together by him
winning the fencing earlier in the day.
These World Records, as well as being the first ever World Cup conducted with Laser Shooting and the first
World Cup in the USA since 1999 makes this World Cup very historic and certainly one to remember.
UIPM Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann reflected on the success of laser shooting: "Laser shooting allows the
Federation to bring this great sport to the kids, we can now go into schools and start kids shooting laser
pistols at any age. Laser Shooting is also beneficial for governments, as now all safety concerns are
withdrawn and there is no lead pollution deteriorating the environment."
UIPM Secretary General Joël Bouzou added: "Laser shooting makes the event much fairer for all athletes.
Athletes can now shoot outside and not be affected by wind conditions as we now shoot with light. To keep
the conditions exactly the same for the athletes the trigger pulls air which results in the same sensation whilst
shooting and also the laser stays in the pistol once the trigger is pulled for 10 m/s in order to replicate the
same time it takes for a pellet to be released from the pistol."
The medals were presented by Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann, UIPM Vice President John Helmick and UIPM
NORCECA President John Holland. Mayor of Rancho Mirage Richard Kite, Chairman of USA Pentathlon
Barry Matchett and Head of the Organising Committee Mike Duffy presented the flowers.

COYLE BECOMES FIRST IRISH ATHLETE TO MAKE A FINAL OF A WORLD CUP
After a solid placement of 14th at World Cup #1 Women’s Qualification, Natalya Coyle is the first Irish
Pentathlete ever to qualify for a final of a World Cup.
The Irish Pentathlon Federation (started just five years ago by a small
group of parents), and Pentathlon Ireland has coach Lindsey Weedon
to thank for all the momentum the sport has gained over the past 18
months.
A former competitor herself, Weedon has brought along three
promising pentathletes with a background in Tetrathlon, a sport
practiced by the IPC (Irish Pony Club) involving four of the five sports of
Pentathlon.
Natalia was also a hockey player, and did running and riding for her
school teams.
After just six weeks of training, Natalya competed in her very first
pentathlon event at the Swiss Nationals, and surprised everyone when
she qualified for the Moscow World Cup Final last year.
With more experience under her belt, her scores increased and she was able to rally support from the Irish
Sports Council and the Olympic Council of Ireland to begin a more professional training regimen. She
placed 5th overall at the Budapest Indoor, before heading for Rancho Mirage.
BENEFITS OF LASER SHOOTING
At World Cup #1 Laser shooting made it’s World Cup
Debut at Rancho Mirage, with the majority of the
athletes impressed of the simplicity it brought to the
shooting discipline. It also allowed 2 World Records to
be broken, one by Pavlo Tymoshchenko (UKR) Gold
Medallist 43 seconds for 15 shots and the other by
Mihael Michalik (CZE) for one round of shooting (5
shots) in a staggering 10.7 seconds.
With the new laser technology the shooting discipline
now works without any pellets / bullets (lead). In the
past the firearms polluted the air with gas and heavy
metals in the gunpowder. Making the change to go to
Air pistol was a first step but it kept the lead "pollution"
of the pellets for the grounds / environment) so Laser
Shooting is the ultimate way to have environmentally
friendly shooting for our great sport.
SO HOW MUCH DOES LASER SHOOTING ACTUALLY HELP THE ENVIRONMENT??
A Modern Pentathlete uses about: 80 pellets per training at least 3 times a week, this equals roughly 1000
pellets per month.
For 1000 pellets per month at a cost of €8; the investment is about is about €100 per athlete per year (equals
12000 pellets). Top athletes do easily the double amount and use hand selected pellets at a cost of double
to triple the price as well.
The estimated regular athlete (1000 shots / month @
€12 per pack = €288) The "pollution": 0,45 gr / pellet x
12000 = 5400 gr = 5.4 KG of lead / athlete per year.
This multiplied by 120,000 pentathlon athletes already
makes about 648 Tons of lead per year. A battery in a
laser pistol lasts an incredible 50,000 shots, so up to 50
months for just one battery. Which equals about 22.4 KG
of lead saved per battery. Now estimate what shooters
outside Pentathlon worldwide would save using laser
shooting.
In addition to this if the paper targets are hit by the
pellets the lead connects partly with the paper, when
melting the lead again there is a lot of extra "dirt" created
by the paper which comes with it.
Lead is an extremely dangerous element and is a poisonous metal that can damage nervous connections
(especially in young children) and cause blood and brain disorders. So to not use it is very beneficial to all
involved.
Even the shot-noise can be counted as ”pollution" or at least a stress factor, for this reason we have been
working on the dry firing mode as well; we can
"shoot" without shot-noise as well, so that this
factor is eliminated on demand.
For the realistic shooting feeling and the athlete
being under high adrenalin during competition, we
have constructed the air-pressure-shot noise in
order to give a slight recoil feedback to the
athlete: "I have shot".
SAFETY ASPECTS OF USING THE LASER
TECHNOLOGY
There is now no danger by projectile, having
replaced the original barrel; the safety of the laser
shooting is 100%. The laser is Class 1 which
means that a normal person can look into the (constant) beam for 8 hours without damage for the eyes. The
typical shot duration right now is: 40 milliseconds, so there is no harm from the sport device any more at all!
Having safe laser shooting also allows younger kids to begin shooting in the combined event earlier. This
gives incentive for the younger kids to start running as running is much more enjoyable when you get to
shoot as well. This is a major stepping stone in developing the sport.
THE GLOBAL VISION OF LASER SHOOTING
The new high secured product is useful to many areas of
today's life in order to create a more peaceful world;
honouring the Olympic Ideals and spirit in the most
perfect way. The weapons have been converted to really
peaceful sport devises with no danger to anyone involved;
even toddlers can use the new system. For the first
time in evolutional history the "throwing of stones onto the
enemy" has been replaced by nothing but light!
TRANSPORTATION OF THE PISTOLS
As the pistols are no longer weapons the transportation
in all fields has been made easier and convenient such
as: transport to the field of play / use in competition
Page 7 of 12
transport / use in training / competition transportation in public areas / transportation with public services,
buses, trains, airplanes
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
The positive and brain power enhancing psychological & pedagogical side effects of concentration
practises (with high self-motivation potential from young to old age) can be played out to full extend.
Some of the exercises (training methods) have therapeutic backgrounds; another tribute from the sport
enhancing the peaceful visions of Olympism.
This is the most historical and successful steps of UIPM with the newest technology.
So, as you can see laser shooting is certainly the best way forward to keep our sport environmentally
sustainable and safe for all.
PENTATHLON FEATURE : RISE OF BRAZILIAN MODERN PENTATHLON
The recent development of Modern Pentathlon
of Brazil can be split in three phases. The first
stands until the creation of the Brazilian
Federation. The second ends with the Pan
American Games Rio 2007. And the last one
begins with the IOC decision, in 2009, choosing
Brazil and, more specifically, the city of Rio de
Janeiro as host city of the 2016 Olympic
Games.
Until 2001, when the Brazilian Federation was
created, the Modern Pentathlon training used to
take place only at some Army facilities. Having a
lot of difficulties to obtain financial resources to
compete and train abroad, some "self
sponsored" athletes got to represent Brazil in international competitions, including some Olympic Games and
World Championships.
The inauguration of the Brazilian Federation in 2001 happened during a special moment, when a Law
approved by the Congress started to guarantee financial resources for the Brazilian Olympic Sport,
considering a certain percentage of the weekly income of official lotteries all over Brazil.
The first expressive results of Brazilian Pentathlon appeared in 2003, during the Pan American Games Santo
Domingo 2003 (Dominican Republic), when besides winning the Silver Medal by Samantha Harvey, Brazil,
after 40 years away from the Olympics, was able to qualify 2 athletes for Athens Games: Harvey and Daniel
Santos.
In 2004, for the first time, Brazil held with great
success a World Cup of Modern Pentathlon.
Chosen as host country of the Pan American
Games 2007, Brazil improved the management of
Olympic Sports with the objective to present the
best performance of the history Games. Sportive
facilities of Olympic standard were built with the
objective of showing to the sportive community
that Brazil had got together the main attributes to
host an edition of the Olympic Games.
A combined action of the Brazilian Olympic
Committee and the Government established a
strong support plan to the Federation in order to
Page 8 of 12
buy equipments and materials. The CBPM received new air pistols, fencing material and uniforms and had
the opportunity to hire a foreign coach.
For the MP competitions in 2007, Deodoro Sports Complex was the stage, in a military area about 45minutes
away from downtown. A 50m Olympic standard pool was built and as a legacy of these Games, represents
today the nucleus of the MP Training Centre. The riding competition was organized at the modern jumping
arena especially made for the Riding Competition of the XV Pan Am Games.
The Gold Medal conquered by Yane Marque during the 2007 Pan Am, confirmed her presence in the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games. A new plan of technical development was designed by the Brazilian Federations
and by the Olympic Committee to support the athletes which represented the country in Beijing.
A great transformation began to occur in 2009 at Deodoro Sports Complex. Considering a decision taken
Just after the 2007 Games, one of the greatest national companies started important investments in that
place. Until the end of this year a hotel with 120 rooms and a Athletic’s track IATA level 1 will be functioning.
Besides that, with the Brazilian Government support, it was possible to arrange some refurbishments in other
older facilities in Deodoro in a way the 4 Events of Modern Pentathlon could be organized in a circle of a ray
of 200m. The 2009 World Cup Final was organized using this format, better for athletes and public.
Now-a-days, even not having the new facilities that are still under construction, about 50 athletes of different
categories train Modern Pentathlon in Deodoro.
The city of Rio de Janeiro will host the World Military Games this year. As one of the main venues, Deodoro
Complex is receiving more investments concerning infrastructure and modernization.
The main Pentathletes that will compete for Brazil are receiving, since 2009, a lot of support from the Army
and Government, mainly for training, also abroad, and allowing them to take part in many international
competitions and offering modern equipments, besides a multi-discipline team for athletes orientations.
This great job was crowned, by the end of 2010, when, for the first time in our sport's history, a Brazilian
Pentathletes, Yane Marques, finished the year among the Top Ten.
There is no doubt that the election of Brazil to host
the 2016 Olympic Games is providing a significant
increase in the level of the Brazilian Olympic sport.
Brazil has now being governed by a new President
and it seems that the official promises made during
the occasion of the historic decision of the IOC, of
increasing financial support for the Olympic Sport
during the next years, will be kept.
Even the Sports that do not have a significant
number of participating athletes, such as the
Pentathlon, are achieving this chance of support
getting additional resources to increase the total of
athletes training group in Brazil.
Some companies, without the historic of supporting sport, are modifying this behaviour, as they began to
identify great opportunities of marketing , associating their brands to the athletes.
Because of this new scenario, of huge sports support we are allowed to let the Training Center in Recife,
capital of the state of Pernambuco – where Yane is from – grows structurally and its quantity of athletes.
Being an Olympic power in a few years became a priority of the Brazilian Government, accompanied by a
supportive police for children and adolescents reaching, mainly, the more needed part of the population.
There are lot of policies in several Brazilian economy segments that follow the same way.
The Brazilian Federation is ready for this movement and will know how to take the opportunities to increase
the nucleus of training for our sport.
