board of the AHA.
Lederle Laboratories, a division of American
Cyanamid Co., will underwrite the costs of the
"Eating for Healthy Tomorrows"
Program
During the past 2 years the AHA and the
American Association of Retired Persons have
piloted a nutrition program, "Eating for Healthy
Tomorrows," designed for African-Americans 50
years of age and older. The program is a 2-hour
combination of lecture, group discussion, interactive
games, and exercise to help participants
become aware of their sodium and fat intakes. A
cooking demonstration and tasting is included to
teach participants how to prepare a heart-healthy
meal.
Pilot testing indicates that participants increase
their knowledge of nutrition and learn ways to
improve their health. The materials are considered
easy to understand and the activities important
and helpful. Because of these positive results, the
AHA and AARP are proceeding with the production
of this program and anticipate that it will be
available in fall 1992. The program will be presented
by registered dietitians and volunteers at
churches, senior centers, community centers, nursing
homes, and housing locations and in hospitalbased
extension programs.
AHA Food Festival to Be Held
in September
The AHA's eighth annual Food Festival will
begin September 19, 1992. The week-long consumer
nutrition education event will be held at
participating supermarkets.
Shoppers will learn about heart-healthy shopping
and eating. The AHA's "Fat-O-Stat" quiz
will alert consumers to sources of hidden fat in
their diets. Nutrition information posters and educational
materials, all from the AHA, will be
available at no charge. The goal of the Food
Festival is not only to help consumers learn about
the relation between coronary heart disease and
diets high in fat, sodium, and cholesterol but also
to teach them about buying and cooking hearthealthy
foods while avoiding sources of hidden fat
and cholesterol.
More than 10,000 volunteers from AHA affiliates
will be working at the Food Festival to educate
their friends and neighbors about heart disease,
the nation's number one killer, and stroke,
