Slaitgiiter IIorsE (229). A boiler exploded in Lewis Frederick's slaughter house<br />

in Heading, Pa., on Dee. VMh, blowing the loof oil the building.<br />

Tank IIotsk (230).<br />

<strong>The</strong> boiler in the New York Central tank house at Churehville,<br />

near Rochester, N. Y., exploded on Dec. 14th, with terrific force. Tlie building, which<br />

was about twentj' feet s(|uare, wa.s completely demolished, and the boiler was liurled<br />

over telegrai)h poles and across Black Creek into Samuel Kichniond's orchard, twenty<br />

rods away. Thomas Mooney, who was in charge of the pumping station, was sitting<br />

about six feet from the boiler, but he escaped with oidy sligiit bruises. He is said to<br />

have been " blown into the ash i)it."<br />

Saw-^Iili, (331). <strong>The</strong> boiler in Swansey's steam saw-mill, situated a few miles<br />

north of Columbus, Miss., burst on Dec. 15th, killing ^Ir. Ehvard Swansey and his negro<br />

fireman, and destroying the mill.<br />

Planing Mill (233). <strong>The</strong> boiler in the Marshall Lumber Company's planing mill,<br />

one-half mile south of Brookhaveu, Miss., exploded on Dec. 16th. Henry Webb, the<br />

fireman, was blown seventy-five feet, and died in half an hour from his injuries. No<br />

one else was near the boiler at the time, all the other hands having just gone to work in<br />

the mill. <strong>The</strong> boiler-house was completely demolished. A portion of the boiler was<br />

blown across the Illinois Central railroad track, tearing down the telegraph wires on<br />

both sides and falling in an old field 100 yards away. <strong>The</strong> force of the explosion was<br />

terrific. Every house in town was jarred by the concussion and windows rattled. <strong>The</strong><br />

loss is estimated at $1,000.<br />

Cotton Gin (333). On Dec. 17th a boiler exploded in the Gin house of Joseph H.<br />

Lee, Fort White, Fla. Frank Smith was killed, and Mr. Lee and half a dozen others<br />

were seriously injured. <strong>The</strong> building and contents were destroyed.<br />

Pump House (334). At Venedito, Mexico, on Dec. 18th, the boiler in a pump house<br />

belonging to the International Mexican railroad, exploded, killing one man instantly<br />

and badly scalding two others. Epimania Garza, who was running the pump, had some<br />

section hands wheeling in coal at the time the explosion occurred, and one of these men,<br />

who was standing by the boiler, was killed. Garza, and another Mexican, were blown<br />

sixty feet into the yard and badly scalded. <strong>The</strong> pump house was completely wrecked.<br />

Heating Boiler (335). A small boiler exploded on Dec. 18th in the basement of<br />

the South Hall in St. .Johnsbury, Vt. It wrecked the partitions and ceilings in its im-<br />

mediate neighborhood, but the damage was not great, and nobody was hurt.<br />

<strong>Locomotive</strong> (336). A locomotive exploded in the roundhouse of the Grand Trunk<br />

railroad in London, Ont., on Dec. 19th, doing considerable damage to the building and<br />

surrounding property. <strong>The</strong> concussion was felt in almost every part of the city. Wil-<br />

liam Connor and William Campbell, Grand Trunk employes, were seriously injured.<br />

<strong>The</strong> loss is estimated at $15,000. One account says, that "the whole city was shaken<br />

like a reed in the wind by the shock."<br />

HoRSE-SHOE Works (337). Three boilers in the large manufactory of the Perkins<br />

Horse-shoe Company, at Valley Falls, near Providence, R. I., blew up on Dec. 19th, and<br />

Nelson Judson, acting as night fireman, was instantly killed, and another man slightly<br />

injured. One of the boilers was blown 300 feet into the Blackstone river. <strong>The</strong> build-<br />

ing was badly wrecked.<br />

Colliery (338). One of the large boilers in the Victoria colliery. Cape Breton<br />

Island, Can., exploded on Dec. 34th, killing George Long, and injuring Daniel McDonald,<br />

Cyril McAdam, John McSween, John McPherson, and Murdock Mclntyre. <strong>The</strong>
