Paper Mill (219). James H. McClintock and Charles A. Flonis were badly injured<br />

and scalded, on Dec. 6th, by the explosion of a boiler in a paper mill in Lock Haven,<br />

Pa. Although their injuries were serious and painful, they will recover. <strong>The</strong> damage<br />

to property was not great.<br />

Saw-Mill (220). At Black Hawk, a small lumbering town nine miles south of<br />

Rapid City, S. D., a boiler exploded on Dec. 7th, in J. W. Wilcoxsen's saw mill. Ben<br />

Richardson, the engineer, and two other employes named Stewart and Hart, were buried<br />

in the ruins of the demolished building. Richardson was killed, but it is thoughtlirob-<br />

able that Hart and Stewart will recover, though they were badly crushed.<br />

Cotton Gin (221). A sad accident occurred twelve miles north of Russellville, Ark.,<br />

on Dec. 7th. at the gin of Mr. Lewis Brashears. John Howard was assisting in rolling<br />

some cotton bales away from the gin, when the boiler exploded, killing him instantly.<br />

Mr. Brashears was scalded badly but not fatally.<br />

Brick-yard (222). On Dec. 8th a boiler exploded in the brick-yard of Gillespy &<br />

Jacob, near Wheeling, "W. Va. <strong>The</strong> building in which it stood was badly wrecked, but<br />

nobody was injured. <strong>The</strong> boiler had been leaking, and was recently patched.<br />

Planing Mill (223). Williams & Brothers' saw and planing-mills, at Red Springs,<br />

near Fayetteville, N. C, were blown up on Dec. 10th by an explosion of the boiler. Twa<br />

men were killed instantly and a number of others were wounded, some of whom are<br />

expected to die. <strong>The</strong> entire building is a complete wreck.<br />

Jail (224). A section of the heating boiler in the basement of the county jail in<br />

Pekin, 111., exploded on Dec. 11th, flooding the floor with hot water. Nobody was hurt.<br />

Car Heating Boiler (225).<br />

On Dec. 11th a heater exploded in a C, H. & D. pas-<br />

senger car in Wapakoneta, near Cincinnati, O. <strong>The</strong> top of the car was blown oflf and<br />

the windows were all broken, but, so far as we could learn, there was nobody injured.<br />

<strong>Locomotive</strong> (226). <strong>The</strong> boiler of locomotive Xo. 17, of the Montana Central Railroad,<br />

exploded on Dec. 11 at Mitchell, near Great Falls, Montana. Engineer Bell and<br />

his flreman were severely scalded. <strong>The</strong> track was badly torn up and travel was seriously<br />

interfered with for a few days.<br />

Paper Mill (227). A boiler exploded on Dec. 12th at the lower mill of the Ticonderoga<br />

Pulp and Paper Company, Ticonderoga, N. Y. <strong>The</strong> mill was partially wrecked<br />

and engineer Provincier was killed. Fireman Pelkey was painfully but not fatally hurt.<br />

<strong>The</strong> boiler-house is a mass of ruins. One-half of the exploded boiler crashed through<br />

the mill and lauded on a bleacher, and the other half was blown into a neighboring<br />

creek. <strong>The</strong> property loss was estimated by some to be as high as $25,000.<br />

Rolling Mills (228). On Dec. 13th two boilers exploded at the Newport Iron<br />

and Steelworks, Newport, Ky., completely wrecking the lower half of the establishment.<br />

<strong>The</strong> mill is situated on the Licking river, about half a mile from its mouth, and<br />

was built of corrugated iron. Two of the firemen, Herman Wessling and George Reed,<br />

were removed from the ruins, but they were so badly hurt that they died. Henry<br />

Maoke was burned, but not fatally so. Two unknown tramps, who had been loitering<br />

about the place, were at first supposed to be buried in the ruins, but their bodies could<br />

not be found. <strong>The</strong> property loss is estimated at $10,000. Portions of the boiler were<br />

found 1,200 feet away, and the explosion was heard in Cincinnati. <strong>The</strong>re was an ex-<br />

plosion at this mill six years ago, in which two men were killed.
