(132). — On May 15th a boiler exploded in Morgan Bros.' new mill in Big Sandy, Tex.<br />

A. Holland lost a leg and an arm, and died shortly afterwards. J. H. Morgan, one of<br />

the owners of the mill, was perhaps fatally hurt. His head was badly bruised and cut,<br />

and he is not rational. Bert Rollins, the engineer, escaped with but slight injuries. <strong>The</strong><br />

boiler-house was blown to atoms, and large timbers, it is said, were blown a full mile<br />

away. <strong>The</strong> property loss was estimated at $3,000.<br />

(133.) — A boiler exploded on May loth in Smith & Thallman's mill in Pakota, near<br />

Salem, 111. <strong>The</strong> exjilosion occurred at the noon hour, and no one was killed, although<br />

the mill was wrecked.<br />

(134.) — On May 16th a boiler exploded in W. D. Arthur's mill in Kingwood, W. Va.,<br />

completely demolishing the building. <strong>The</strong> only person hurt was Howard Hileman,<br />

whose collar bone was broken, his legs burned, and his hands badly smashed. His in-<br />

juries are considered very grave.<br />

(135.) — <strong>The</strong> electric light plant in Eldora, Iowa, was wrecked on May 18th by the<br />

explosion of one of the boilers. <strong>The</strong> power-house and two frame buildings adjoining<br />

were completely destroyed, and Dr. A. E. Gier, who occupied one of the buildings, was<br />

instantly killed. Louis Templeman, the iireman, was buried under two feet of bricks.<br />

His left leg was broken in two places and he is so badly injured about the head that it is<br />

believed that he cannot live. A piece of the boiler carried in the end of the Ellsworth<br />

House, and several other buildings were injured. <strong>The</strong> ruined plant was completed one<br />

year ago, and cost $20,000. <strong>The</strong> total property loss is estimated at $25,000.<br />

(136.) — On May 19th a boiler exploded at Judd's mill, seven miles north of Columbia<br />

City, Ind., completely wrecking the mill, and instantly killing Charley Judd, the eightyear-old<br />

son of the proprietor. Christian Judd, who was himself seriously scalded. Frank<br />

Hass, a mill hand, was also severely injured. <strong>The</strong> mill was wrecked.<br />

(137.) —On May 21st a boiler exploded on the steam yacht Eva on Lake Winnebago,<br />

near Oshkosh, Wis. <strong>The</strong> yacht belongs to Daniel Jones. Mrs. Jones was seriously in-<br />

jured, and Mr. Jones was injured slightly.<br />

(138.) — One of a battery of five boilers exploded in Keene, N. H., on May 22d, at<br />

the Beaver mills. Herbert G. Holton and Lewis W. Starkey were killed, and Frank<br />

Droulette, George H. Carpenter, Gregory Carpenter, Michael Roach, George W. Piper,<br />

and William Clark were badly injured. Droulette died later in the day, and Piper was so<br />

badly cut and bruised that his recovery was considered doubtful. <strong>The</strong> building was<br />

badly wrecked, and the damage was estimated at $20,000.<br />

(139.) — A boiler exploded on May 17 in Marks Bros.' mill, near Leon, Iowa. Henry<br />

Honks and Anthony Marks were badly scalded, the former perhaps fatally so. Honks<br />

was blown 25 or 30 feet, over a pile of lumber. His back was badly hurt, his head was<br />

cut, and he was severely scalded about the head and shoidders. At last accounts his re-<br />

covery was considered doubtful. <strong>The</strong> boiler buried itself in the ground nearly a luuidred<br />

yards from the mill.<br />

(140.) — On May 25th a boiler exploded in Ring, Merrill & Tillotson's factory in Sag-<br />

inaw, Mich. Some damage was done in the engine and dynamo rooms, but it is thought<br />

that the loss Avill not exceed $300 or $400. <strong>The</strong> fireman received a severe scalp wound.<br />

(141.) — One of the large boilers in Truibb & Go's mill, in Capron, Va., exploded<br />

on May 2Gth. <strong>The</strong> fireman was somewhat injured. Pieces of the boiler were blown 5^0<br />

yards. <strong>The</strong> loss is estimated at between $10,000 and $15,000.
