(8) Non-business factors<br />
Most Chinese are hospitable and show respect to foreigners, especially to<br />
Americans. In big cities many people speak very good English and have a<br />
relatively deep understanding of the western philosophy. However, due to<br />
differences in cultural backgrounds, <strong>PMMI</strong> Members are encouraged to take<br />
notice of some unique characteristics when doing business with Chinese<br />
companies. For instance, it is an unwritten law that Chinese purchasers want to<br />
send a delegation to visit the country where the product is manufactured. Only a<br />
very limited proportion of the agenda is spent discussing business with the seller.<br />
Another example is that Chinese businessmen like to talk about serious business<br />
over dining tables. When <strong>PMMI</strong> members are asked to a Chinese banquet, please<br />
be prepared for a business negotiation.<br />
