GWENT WELSH PONY AND COB ASSOCIATION SHOW
Hilltop Sports Ground, Ebbw Vale. Sunday 26 th June.
The Gwent WPCA Bronze Medal Show enjoyed the most glorious weather and the secretary Ann Tite
and her committee are to be congratulated for running a very well-organised event which attracted
some very strong competition.
Despite competitors having travelled from far and wide, the lion share of the awards went to two
Studs who are within walking distance of the showground, the Hywi Stud of Roger, Rhian, Jessica,
Patrick and Emma Davies and the Tryfel Stud of Chris, Marie, Michael and Bridie Cobley. The
Association is fortunate to have these two local Studs which have captured major awards at Shows
all over Britain.
The supreme award however went a little further afield, the four judges Miss Catryn Bigley (B) and
Messrs Adrian Bowen (A), John Kirk (C) and Brian Foster (D) awarding it to Messrs Eddie and Mark
Tamplin’s dark cream section B stallion Griashall Kiwi from Caerphilly. Kiwi was the 1999 overall
Royal Welsh champion as a two-year-old and, after being leased out and producing prize-winning
stock re-entered the fray from home last year and was Royal Welsh male champion and reserve
overall, also earlier this year won at the Royal Bath and West. Reserve section B champion was the
brood mare Rhydspence Sweet Pea owned by Mr and Mrs Hayes from Talyllyn, Brecon and her foal
Rhydspence Sweet Sorrel also won. Section B youngstock champion was Janice Woodland’s bay filly
Pennwood Daliah; she was the bargain of Mr Clive Morse’s consignment of seven filly foals on the
2008 Fayre Oaks Sale. Reserve youngstock champion was the yearling filly Griashall Cara which
breeder Mark Tamplin is producing for her owner Mrs J S Hall. Cara is sired by Griashall Nijinsky
three-quarter brother to Kiwi and she also won at the Three Counties and was 2 nd at the Royal Bath
and West.
Reserve supreme was the Cobley family’s good-moving thirteen-year-old section A brood mare
Tryfel Bethan who has won many awards during her career including the Royal Welsh Show and she
was champion at the Royal Bath and West Show earlier in the month. She is also a successful
breeder, her three-year-old daughter Tryfel Classey Lady being youngstock champion here; Classey
Lady is sired by Tryfel Dynamite, a son of Ty’rcapel Sprig who is also sire of Bethan. Bethan won her
class of 17 entries including many former champions and the 2 nd prize mare, the 2009 National
Champion, Sophie Williams’ Caerheulog Lady Jane was reserve champion. Reserve youngstock
champion was Mrs S L Mason’s yearling colt Wilcrick Envoy who won his class of 23 entries at
Lampeter and a class of 25 entries at Glanusk. Appearing for the first time ever in a showring was the
winning stallion, the eight-year-old Idyllic Idris, top-priced stallion at last year’s Fayre Oaks Sale; he is
produced for his owner Lancashire veterinarian Mrs Rosie MacKenzie by Bethan Hooper and Rhydian
Donati of the Milwas Stud, Pontyclun.
Section C champion was Hywi Stud’s well-known four-year-old chestnut mare Hywi Pollyanna; she
won her class and was reserve youngstock champion from 226 entries at last year’s Royal Welsh
Show and supreme filly over all sections at Glanusk. The equally well-known stallion Bryncarreg
Lightning Jack was reserve champion; owned by Wayne Groucott and Mrs Shirley Williams he has
been supreme at Lampeter and Glanusk and National champion section C and was 3 rd in the 2010
WPCS sire-ratings. Section C youngstock champion and overall youngstock was the two-year-old colt

Caebryn Endeavour, a very promising colt with impressive tail carriage; his breeder Mrs Veronica
Layton gave him to his producer Michael Cobley after he was reserve male champion at last year’s
Royal Welsh Show, a very rare achievement for a yearling. Reserve youngstock champion was the
two-year-old filly Pwllmelin Holly produced by Justin Walters for her breeder Graham Moffatt, she
has also been a good winner since a foal.
Hywi Stud reigned supreme also in section D with their eight-year-old bay mare Hywi Mari by Nebo
Sion. Mari has been consistently in the ribbons at major Shows, at the 2009 Royal Welsh Show she
was 3 rd in a class of 28 mares to the former RW youngstock champion Dyffryngwy Briallen and
Haighmoor Glain, Prince of Wales champion the following year. The section D stallions can always be
relied upon to produce a spectacle and the winner Mickey Morris’ Avonvalley Great Briton, winner
at last year’s Royal Welsh of the junior stallion class of 30 entries was on top form and was reserve
champion. The youngstock champion was Mr Dening’s three-year-old colt Danaway Charlie
produced by Paul Harper and he was later 4 th at the Royal Welsh. Reserve champion was the filly
Cascob Pretty Polly by Thorndonpark Harry who had won a class of 15 entries for her owner, former
WPCS President Mrs Mary Edwards of Cascob.
Miss Fiona Leadbitter judged the Welsh part-breds and the ridden classes. Anne Pritchard-Simmons’
many-times champion Cupidhill Calvados was in-hand champion from Lisa Drew’s large Patchwood
Skygazer who went on to claim the overall ridden championship from the Welsh cob gelding , Leah
Foster’s Cared Rhodri.
Champion young handler was Megan Williams (10 – 12 years) with Danielle Pritchard (13 – 15 years)
reserve.
Dr Wynne Davies
