Board Chairperson 

and President/CEO 

Dear Members and Friends, 

The past year has brought great success and many blessings for the YWCA during what can only be 

described as very challenging times. Despite national crises and local recession, our community continued 

to see the tremendous value the YWCA brings to those in need and committed itself to ensuring that 

those turning to us for help would continue to find it here. The YWCA’s audit showed, once again, 

exemplary financial stewardship. And with an eye to our future, the membership of the YWCA’s Heritage 

Society continued to grow, adding the names of those who have made estate gift arrangements to 

eventually benefit the YWCA and those it serves. 

The YWCA has been blessed with a wonderfully rich history on which we often pause to reflect, particularly 

during such difficult times. Over the last 102 years, this organization has witnessed tragedy – world 

wars, economic depression, atrocities against humanity – and great achievement – advances in the 

rights of women and minorities, local collaboration to more effectively deal with the issues that tear at the 

very fabric of our community, the individual triumphs of those seeking our support. Through it all, the 

YWCA has sustained and in fact, thrived. Since the very beginning the YWCA has been a place of 

healing and renewal because of the generosity and support offered by our community and great friends, 

like you. It is with pleasure and appreciation that we, in turn, offer to you this report of the successes you 

have helped the YWCA achieve in the last year.

Programs 

and 

Services 

Sexual Assault Program 

The YWCA Sexual Assault Program continues to be considered one of the most comprehensive 

programs of its kind in the state. Our services include: 24-hour crisis line; the Nurse Examiner 

Program; crisis counseling; support groups and longer term therapy. The volunteers who generously 

give of their time to be with victims of sexual assault during their examinations make this 

program work by providing personal care and support during a horribly traumatic time. During the 

past fiscal year we provided services to 767 victims of sexual assault and their family members. 

The YWCA Nurse Examiner Program also continued to fill its lead role in research, contributing 

to the knowledge base in the relatively new field of forensic nursing and gaining prominent 

recognition for YWCA projects in several national journals. 

Domestic Violence Program 

Marking its 25th anniversary in 2002, the YWCA Domestic Crisis Center became a refuge for 650 

women and children fleeing domestic violence situations last year. In addition to the nurturing, 

safe environment available at our emergency shelter, families caught in domestic violence are 

given access to our community’s most comprehensive and progressive domestic violence 

services which include individual counseling and support groups as well as transitional housing 

for families leaving the YWCA shelter. Through Project H.E.A.L. (Housing, Employment, Advocacy 

and Legal Assistance), the YWCA offered supportive services for twenty families in 2002 so 

that they could better educate and equip themselves as they transition out of the cycle of domestic 

violence. The YWCA Men Choosing Alternatives to Violence (MCAV) Program also saw a 

change in 2002. With the support of the 61st District Court, which is now providing meeting 

space for this critical element to our community’s domestic violence response, future MCAV 

Program groups will be held at the courthouse. This is in order to provide a more sensitive 

environment at the YWCA for victims, but to still continue offering this vital domestic violence 

service. 

Underscoring the high-quality staff available to those we serve, the YWCA was also pleased to 

learn that Nancy Twiehaus, Family Advocate at the Domestic Crisis Center for 14 years, was 

chosen by the City of Grand Rapids to receive a National Community Development Week Award 

in 2002. 

Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program 

Since opening its doors in 1982, the YWCA Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program has helped 

approximately 4500 families – 200 families in 2002 alone – to deal with the trauma of incest. With 

a focus on healing the entire family, not just the victim,the YWCA includes individual, family, 

marital and group counseling as key elements of the treatment program, as well as, educational 

and support groups. Current economic conditions have raised serious funding challenges for us 

as shifting funding sources and funding policies create a somewhat unpredictable environment. 

Despite this, and an additional 10% increase since 2001 in the number of children now in the 

foster care system due to incest-related issues, the YWCA continues to accommodate immediate 

community demand.

Health Fitness Program 

The longest thread in the YWCA’s 102 year history, the YWCA Health Fitness Program continued to 

fill its role as an important part of YWCA services in 2002. With a growing emphasis on holistic 

therapy, clients in the YWCA’s Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Sexual Abuse Treatment 

programs were successfully encouraged to take advantage of the services and facilities available in 

the Health Fitness Center. For many, the YWCA’s Health Fitness Center became the place where 

they could begin building a healthy view of their bodies or enjoy a safe, physical and playful environment. 

With a core membership of 694 individuals and programming that is structured to serve a 

highly diverse client base, the YWCA Health Fitness Program served a total of almost 1,500 people, 

including clients from Park School, Spectrum Rehabilitation, Wildwood, Kendall College, Sister to 

Sister Breast Cancer Support Group and Senior Neighbors. 

Girls Inc. Program 

With a second year of successes under its belt, the YWCA Girls Program took on the formal name of 

the YWCA Girls Inc. Program in order to highlight its status as a licensee of the nationally regarded 

Girls Inc. curriculum and to distinguish itself from other more traditional girls programs. With a target 

population of girls, ages 9 to 17, who have either witnessed violence or been the victims of violence 

themselves, strong evidence is emerging on the pilot program’s benefits. In a recent survey of all 

YWCA Girls Inc. Program participants, more than ninety percent indicated that our program promotes 

positive values and felt supported by adults in our program. More than eighty percent indicated that 

our program promotes social competencies and a positive identity. One mother recently commented 

to YWCA staff that her daughter’s teacher was exceptionally pleased with the girl’s improvement in 

her science course, so much so, that the teacher requested further information on the YWCA so she 

could refer other female students in the hopes of achieving similar results. 

Major funding for the pilot program was provided by the Nokomis Foundation, the Grand Rapids 

Community Foundation, the Slemons Foundation, the Heart of West Michigan United Way, the Frey 

Foundation, the Padnos Foundation, and the Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board. 

With one year left in the pilot period, efforts are now focused on identifying and securing a stable, 

long-term funding base. 

YWCA Caroline W. Putnam 

Heritage Society 

Established in 2001 and its charter membership secured in 2002, the YWCA Caroline W. Putnam 

Heritage Society was so named in recognition of Mrs. Putnam’s steadfast commitment to the women 

and girls of our community. Through her generous bequest which was made during the early part of 

the twentieth century, her legacy has since become the cornerstone of today’s YWCA. A full biography 

of this extraordinary woman is included on the YWCA’s website (www.gr-ywca.org). The Putnam 

Heritage Society recognizes those individuals with similar personal commitments who have graciously 

made estate gift arrangements to eventually benefit the YWCA and those it serves.

Community 

Events 

The YWCA was busy planning several community events in 2002. Three major annual 

fundraisers -- Circle of Women, Run Jane Run, and Tribute -- provided almost $100,000 in 

greatly needed revenue for the YWCA while also raising the organization’s profile within our 

community. Similarly, the YWCA coordinated and supported two important events -- Take 

Back the Night and Domestic Violence Awareness Day -- to raise awareness of the issues of 

violence against women in our community.
