Slovenske Konjice
Slovenske Konjice was first mentioned in written
sources in 1146 as a parish. Now, the town is the
administrative and economic centre of Upper Dravinja
valley. This nice town, with about 5000 inhabitants
lies between Konjiška gora on one side and golden hills
of the wine-growing Škalce on the other.

Our route

1. POINT: High school
High school Slovenske Konjice was established in year
2003. We moved to the new building in year 2005. We do
not have all lessons in this building, we have sport lessons
in the nearby sport hall. The most popular sports in our
town are basketball and football.

2. POINT: Trebnik Manor
Trebnik has got its name after an exterminated forest,
where they later built the Manor. The first owners of
the manor were lords Windischgraetz. Today, they have
a herb gallery with a herb garden. They also organize
chivalric games, education and seminar tourism.

3. POINT: The church of St. Jurij
The first church of Konjice was built very early. Its
beginnings go to the era of gothic art. A very interesting
thing on the church is its bell tower, which is one of the
oldest and biggest bell towers in Slovenian Štajerska
(Styria). In 1749 many interesting frescoes, which
represent Mary’s life and four seasons, were made.

4. POINT: St. Jurij’s day
Every year people in Konjice celebrate St. Jurij's day by
reliving the old legend about St. Jury and the dragon.
Every year they make an extraordinary all-day culturallytourist
event whose motto is:
''May good conquer evil.''

5. POINT: The museum of weapon
The museum is in the immediate neighbourhood of the
St. Jurij’s church. Most of the objects on show (sabres,
helmets …) are connected with the time of World War
I. many of them are also connected with our town and
the life in it.

6. POINT: The coat-of-arms
The Konjice coat-of-arms is unique and connected to
the horse. It was made before the year 1571 and is so
called “talking coat-of-arm’’. On it is a white horse on
the red background.

Population of Slovenske Konjice
In the young municipality reside 13938 inhabitants, 6900
male and 7038 females. The biggest settlement is Slovenske
Konjice (approximately 5000 inhabitants). Other population
is concentrated in other settlements: Bezina, Draža vas,
Loče and Žiče.
The main economic activities are industry and service
industry. Above all the latter has been strong developed
in last years, when the town faced large changes as is
ruin of larger industrial companies.

7. POINT: Contagious sign
Contagious sign stands on Slovenske Konjice market.
On the main column in Statue of St. Florijan and on
lower bench mats around him are statues of some
other councillors. It was built with intention, that the
town would be protected before contagious diseases
such as plague and other diseases of the 18 th century.

8. POINT: Riemer town gallery
It is in the centre of the old town core. In the gallery
we can enjoy the constant collection of paintings from
the early renaissance and till now; we can see more
than 70 paintings. Besides paintings, we can also be
charmed by the antique furniture.

9. POINT: Štokl - The oldest house in Konjice
Štokl is the oldest house in Slovenske Konjice. It was
built in 16 th Century. Firstly it was grange of Žička
Kartuzija, afterward other occupant had it.

10. POINT: Middleage square centre
Middleage square centre has developed on both sides of
the road. In the middle of street flew brook Dragon
slobber. This peculiarity image has not changed until
today. Many years ago all houses were wooden. Because
of that fire frequently burnt down all the town. In the
middle of it stands remembrance monument of St. Jurij
and two murals.

11. POINT: Entente Florale
Entente Florale is motion in which the most beautiful
towns of Europe are included. They have been connected
for almost 30 years. A Slovenian town has joined to this
motion in year 1998, when Slovenske Konjice was chosen
for the most beautiful town in Europe.

12. POINT: Hotel Dravinja
The Hotel Dravinja is located in a quiet spot in the
center of the city. It combines the National Restaurant
decorated in vineyard style, the pleasant City Cafe, and
the artistic ambience of the Artemidin dvor restaurant
with the comfort of a modern hotel whose kitchen is
famous for excellent food.

13. POINT: Steamer locomotive
Steamer locomotive drove through Slovenske Konjice
since 1892 to 1962. Train was passenger and goods
train. Velocity of that train was 30 km/h.

14. POINT: Vineyards Zlati grič
The company's main activity is producing grapes and
wine. Beside that they also offer playing golf on their
golf course and hotel trade services in the wine shop.
They are doing their business mostly in Škalce, in
idyllic countryside, which lies between the mountain
Konjiška gora and Pohorje.

Natural regional composition
The central part of the municipality is flat, and the
inhabitants regulated the river Dravinja because of
the marsh land, so the town grew up next to the river.
The meadows were changed into fields, and on the
southwestern slope of the Konjice mountain there are
numerous Karst features such as gutters, sinkholes,
Karstic springs.

Utilisation of Flora
The soil around the river Dravinja allows the growth of
great meadows, and where flat land meets the higher
ground there used to be many Beech trees, but nowadays
they have mainly been taken over by spruce trees.
Nowadays Konjiška gora is covered by a mixture of trees
but in the past it was mainly a leafy area.
