Andy Warhol, 1928 - 1987
Andy Warhol wurde am 6. August 1928 unter dem Namen
Andrew Warhola geboren. Schon in frühen Jahren zeigte
Warhol reges Interesse an der Fotografi e und am Zeichnen.
Nachdem er die Carnegie Mellon Universität besucht hatte,
zog er nach New York und arbeitete als Zeichner für verschiedene
Magazine, darunter Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar und
The New Yorker. 1952 hatte der Künstler seine erste Einzelausstellung
und vier Jahre später nahm er an seiner ersten
Gemeinschaftsausstellung im Museum of Modern Art teil.
Bildern der Populärkultur entsprechend, schuf Warhol Gemälde,
die Symbole des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts bleiben
werden, wie zum Beispiel die Campbell’s Suppendose, sowie
die Marilyn- und Elvis-Serie. Warhol arbeitete mit einer Vielzahl
von Medien, von der Malerei bis zur Fotografi e, und moderierte
in den 80ern seine eigene Talk-Show auf MTV. Andy Warhol
starb am 22. Februar 1987 als einer der wichtigsten Künstler
des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts.

Andy Warhol, 1928 - 1987
Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola August 6, 1928. From
an early age, Warhol showed an interest in photography and
drawing. After attending Carnegie Mellon University, Warhol
moved to New York and worked as an illustrator for several
magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and The New
Yorker. In 1952 the artist had his fi rst solo exhibition and four
years later participated in his fi rst group show exhibited at the
Museum of Modern Art.
Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created
many paintings that remain icons of 20th century art including
the Campbell’s Soup Can, Marilyn and Elvis series. Warhol
worked in a variety of mediums from painting to photography
and in the eighties hosted his own talk-show on MTV. Andy Warhol
died February 22, 1987 fi rmly established as one of the most
important artists of the 20th century.
