2 Netcool/Proviso Functional Overview, Version 4.3.1
The DataLoad Module
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
This section provides an overview of the DataLoad module, and explains in general terms how to configure it to
collect network data.
Netcool/Proviso DataLoad collects network data from the following two sources:
• An SNMP collector that collects data using SNMP polling.
• A Bulk Collector that imports data files from different sources such as flat files from device providers or files
generated by other SNMP collectors.
Configuration Tasks
The following sections outline various configuration tasks that should be performed on the DataLoad module.
DataLoad and SNMP
The SNMP collector provides raw data files to the Data Channel for processing by the Complex Metric Engine
(CME) before being inserted into the database.
To configure DataLoad on SNMP, you would perform the following tasks:
1. Create and run an inventory.
An inventory does the following:
— Discovers and import resources in your network
— Synchronizes new data for your profile with existing data
— Runs automatic grouping
2. Define the data collection request to collect and store data for network resources using SNMP formulas.
For more information on configuring DataLoad on SNMP, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
DataLoad and the Bulk Collector
The Bulk Collector provides non-SNMP based metric collection, such as the following:
• Device files (for example, CBX500, Unisphere, Cisco, and Redback)
• Management station files (for example, Alcatel 5620 and HP OpenView)
• Flow information files (for example, Cisco NetFlow and Juniper Network CFlow)
• Customer relationship management (CRM) information files (for example, Remedy)
The Bulk Collector creates both data files and resource files. The data files go through processing by the CME
and then get inserted into the Netcool/Proviso database.
The resource files are sent to the DataMart and are processed by the inventory server.
The process works like this:
• Data files are transferred to the Data Channel by the File Transfer Engine (FTE).
Resource files are “pushed” to DataMart by an internal FTP process and are sent to a directory on the
DataMart machine. An inventory server then polls the directory for new files and performs an inventory if
new files are detected.
Netcool/Proviso Functional Overview, Version 4.3.1 3
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
For each resource file, the Bulk Collector defines the correct inventory profile to be used. All files related to
a profile are stored in the same profile directory, which is named after the profile. For example, if the profile
is named bulk_50, the directory is named bulk_50/.
An inventory polling command is created and run periodically to browse the profile directories. The
inventory polling command does the following:
— Creates a profile in the database if one does not exist
— Moves profiles out of the staging directory
— Merges all files that have the same inventory arguments and values into a single file
— Launches inventory commands upon each file
To configure DataLoad on a Bulk Collector, you would perform the following tasks:
1. Create new formulas in the database with type import, if necessary, in order for the data to be collected.
Also the Bulk Collector has to support that formula in its design in order for the data to be collected.
2. (Optional) Configure the inventory poll period if you want to change it from the default value of an hour.
Note: Resources are written to a flat file on the Bulk Collector, which is then pushed to the inventory server. The
inventory server takes care of synchronizing with the database.
3. Define the data collection request to collect and store data for network resources using the Bulk formulas.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
4 Netcool/Proviso Functional Overview, Version 4.3.1
The Data Channel Module
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
The Netcool/Proviso Data Channel aggregates the data that is collected through Netcool/Proviso DataLoad for
use by the Netcool/Proviso DataView reporting functions.
Essentially, it creates the following aggregations:
• Resource aggregation for every metric and resource
• Group aggregation of every group
• User-defined aggregation computed from raw data
The Netcool/Proviso Data Channel also processes on-line calculations and detects real-time threshold violations
such as the following:
• Raw data violating configured thresholds
• Raw data violating configured thresholds and exceeding this threshold during a specific duration of time
• Averaged data violating configured thresholds
The Netcool/Proviso Data Channel Complex Metric Engine (CME) performs on-the-fly calculations for a Data
Channel. These calculations include time aggregations for resources and groups, as well as a variety of calculations
using raw data, thresholds, properties, and constants as inputs.
Note: If CME formulas have been defined for the incoming metric data, the values are processed by those
formulas.
CME also computes aggregations for both individual resources and resource groups.
Note: You need to define a calendar and a time zone for group aggregation.
CME runs as a server process and processes SNMP or Bulk data streams for a single or multiple SNMP or Bulk
Collectors. It maintains the statistics used for the determination of threshold violations and writes properties to
the database.
Note: The CME cannot process SNMP and Bulk data streams on the same Data Channel.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
Configuration Tasks
The following sections outline various configuration tasks that are performed on the Data Channel.
The Next Hour Policy
The Data Channel processes data every hour. The Next Hour policy specifies the number of seconds to wait
past the hour for files to arrive when the next hourly directory has been created.
The default value causes the Data Channel to wait 15 minutes (default value) after the hour before it starts
processing data for the next hour. The Next Hour policy is configured during the Data Channel installation. You
can change the settings by editing the dc.cfg file.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso Installation Guide.
Netcool/Proviso Functional Overview, Version 4.3.1 5
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
Calendar and Time Zone
You need to associate a time zone with a group to enable aggregation. A time zone determines the date stamp
for data. It is attached to a group and is associated with the resources and resource groups below it.
Calendars define non-operational periods called planned outages. When associated with groups, a calendar
controls when data for those groups are to be processed.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide and the Netcool/Proviso Command Line
Interface Guide.
Threshold Detection
A threshold is a value that is compared against metrics to determine if the metrics exceed or drop below a specific
limit. Using thresholds as the measure against which data is evaluated lets you report on only those resources with
pertinent data.
The following are examples of thresholds:
• Burst threshold –“removes” the natural network bursts by evaluating how many times in a row the
violations occurred over a certain period of time.
• Period threshold – involves the concept of duration for which the threshold is violated. This duration is
accumulated until the end of the SLA period.
In addition, a threshold can indicate two different levels of meaning, warning and critical. You can deploy
thresholds per metric (for example the same threshold for all resources for a specific metric) or per resource.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide and the Netcool/Proviso Command Line
Interface Guide.
Properties
Properties are the attributes or characteristics of an element or sub-element that defines its state, appearance, or
value.
The CME uses numeric properties in calculations with raw data or other complex metrics. The CME determines
what properties are required and loads them from the database at startup.
The properties are kept in CME memory. When a property value changes in the database, the CME obtains the
new value on the next load from the database.
Properties are installed by Netcool/Proviso Application Packs. You can also define new properties.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso Command Line Interface Guide and the Netcool/Proviso DataMart
Operation Guide.
6 Netcool/Proviso Functional Overview, Version 4.3.1
The DataMart Module
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
The Netcool/Proviso DataMart stores data collected and processed by Netcool/Proviso DataChannel and
PROVISIO DataLoad, and provides applications that support the following:
• The discovery of network elements and sub-elements
• The synchronization of the new data with already stored data
• The running of automatic grouping
• The creation of data requests
• The creation of new formulas
• The editing of resources, groups, properties, and thresholds
Configuration Tasks
The following sections outline various configuration tasks that are performed on the DataMart.
The Inventory (SNMP)
You create and run an inventory to do the following:
• Discover and import resources in your network
• Synchronize new data for your profile with existing data
• Run automatic grouping
The inventory process uses discovery formulas during the process of discovering and analyzing the network.
Discovery formulas are used against sub-elements only (not against hosts). Discovery formulas for most
interfaces are already included with Netcool/Proviso DataMart. You can, however, write a new discovery formula
to include a device that is new to the market.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
The Inventory (Bulk)
Resource files generated by a Bulk Collector are “pushed” to the DataMart by an internal FTP process and are
sent to a directory on the DataMart machine. An inventory server then polls the directory for new files and
performs an inventory if new files are detected.
For each resource file, the Bulk Collector defines the correct inventory profile to be used. All files related to a
profile are stored in the same profile directory, which is named after the profile. For example, if the profile is
named bulk_50, the directory is named bulk_50/.
An inventory polling command is created and run periodically to browse the profile directories. The inventory
polling command does the following:
• Creates a profile in the database if one does not exist
• Moves profiles out of the staging directory
• Merges all files that have the same inventory arguments and values into a single file
• Launches inventory commands upon each file
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
Groups
Netcool/Proviso's grouping technology automatically organizes networking data into a structure that makes
managing the information about thousands or millions of resources easier.
You can create custom grouping rules using the Rule Editor available in Netcool/Proviso DataMart or from
the command line using resmgr.
Note: Default grouping rules are only provided if you install Netcool/Proviso Application Packs.
To execute grouping rules, you need to run the Autogrouping option in the Inventory Tool Wizard.
Autogrouping applies default or custom grouping rules for an inventory profile.
When specifying automatic grouping, a link is created in the database for each resource that is included in a group.
Re-grouping the resources modifies these links; however, database changes for the resources are not made.
The following diagram illustrates the typical grouping structure set up for use with Netcool/Proviso Application
Packs.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide and the Netcool/Proviso Command Line
Interface Guide.
You define the data collection request to collect and store data for network resources using the Request
Editor. Collection formulas (SNMP or Bulk) are used to collect information about the status of various devices
in the network. There are numerous collection formulas included with Netcool/Proviso DataMart; however, you
can write additional formulas for a customized collection process.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
Calendar for a Data Request
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
You can use a calendar for an SNMP data collection request. A calendar defines periods for data collection. For
example, you can schedule data collection for specific days and times. You can also alternate different calendars
to a data collection to suit your needs.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
Formulas
You can create and modify custom formulas for use as discovery and collection formulas. A formula is a script,
written in a proprietary language developed by Micromuse Corporation. A formula lets you customize the
information gathered by Netcool/Proviso DataMart.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide.
Objects
You can manage resources using the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Resource Editor GUI or from the
command line using the Resource Manager. Managing resources includes:
• Viewing resource information
• Viewing property details
• Exporting resources
• Importing resources
• Adding thresholds
• Adding resources
• Deleting resources
• Deleting properties
• Deploying reports
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide and the Netcool/Proviso Command Line
Interface Guide.
Reports
Automatic report deployment involves associating reports with dynamic grouping rules by using the
Netcool/Proviso DataMart Resource Editor GUI or from the command line using the Resource
Manager. Associating reports with the grouping rules ensures that the reports are deployed by any new groups
generated by the rule.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataMart Configuration Guide and the Netcool/Proviso Command Line
Interface Guide.
Netcool/Proviso Functional Overview, Version 4.3.1 9
Chapter 1: The Netcool/Proviso Product Suite
The DataView Module
The Netcool/Proviso DataView module is an application server for producing and managing Web-based network
reports.
Configuration Tasks
The following sections describe the key configuration tasks for the DataView module.
Security
DataView security needs to be configured for reports and DataView tools, and the SilverStream security for
application server access.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataView User’s Guide.
Reports
You create reports by modifying reporter parameters. A reporter is the framework of the report based on a style
sheet. It contains the parameters needed to produce a report, such as metric formulas, drilldown links, labels, titles
and so on. Reporters are accessed through the DataView Navigator.
Deploying Reports
You can deploy reports either manually or automatically.
• Manual Report Deployment
You can manually deploy reports against individual resources or resource groups through the reporter
parameters.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataView User’s Guide.
• Automatic Report Deployment
Automatic report deployment involves associating reports with dynamic grouping rules by using the
Netcool/Proviso DataMart Resource Editor GUI or from the command line using the
Resource Manager. Associating reports with the grouping rules ensures that the reports are deployed
by any new groups generated by the rule.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataView User’s Guide and the Netcool/Proviso Command Line
Interface Guide.
Associating Users with Reports
You need to associate users with the reports that you want them to view. When you set up user access to reports,
you associate the user with specific resource groups.
This association lets the user view the reports deployed to that group. The resource groups you associate the user
with are generated in the Netcool/Proviso DataMart module.
For more information, see the Netcool/Proviso DataView User’s Guide.
