A time for discovery
It’s been a remarkable year for the team
preparing for the 32nd London International
Wine Fair and Distil. Much of the summer of
2011 was spent in consultation with exhibitors
and visitors as to whether the event should
change venue, and more radically, whether
or not consumers should be invited to attend.
The question of venue was all but answered
for us when Earl’s Court confirmed plans to
redevelop the entire site, and Olympia lost
its dedicated tube service while still suffering
from stifling heat under its glass roof.
The question of consumers being allowed
to attend the Fair, however, did reveal
something of a split decision. Nobody doubts
the value of being ‘consumer facing’ in
these tough economic times, but would the
LIWF become a better event if wine-loving
members of the general public were invited
to attend, either at certain times, or to a
specific section of the Fair?
The debate gathered momentum and
opinions from producers, buyers and the
trade at large were canvassed. The results
were some 75% in favour of remaining firmly
trade only without concessions, which in
turn led us to keeping the existing format for
another year at least.
That said, the 2012 event is still packed with
other new initiatives, features and tastings.
We’re delighted to welcome the finals of the
UK Sommelier of the Year on the Wednesday,
and a new zone aimed at championing
niche producers and importers, our Small
Independents Pavilion, will have pride of place
at the front of the hall.
The International Wine Challenge will, for
the first time, hold their ‘Discovery Tasting’
at the Fair. The tasting provides buyers with
the opportunity to assess any style of wine
entered into the IWC whose producers are
seeking an importer. Over 1,000 wines will
be available and are grouped by country/
style and split into three sections: on-trade,
high street & supermarkets and independent
off-trade. A truly remarkable tasting – and one
not to be missed.
Specific features too have been introduced
for independent retailers and the on-trade,
with details in your copy of this year’s
Grapevine. For the most up-to-date show
news, or to book seminars and masterclasses,
please visit www.londonwinefair.com
All in all, the 2012 LIWF will be an exceptional
showcase of the global wine trade today; and
with some fifty tastings, debates, seminars
and briefings taking place, I am positive
that your three-day voyage will lead to
many discoveries and rewarding business
opportunities.
Jean-Luc Colombo, Laure
has been surrounded by
wine all her life. Following
some time out travelling the world after
studying for a Masters in Management, Laure
returned to her roots and has subsequently
passed her Bachelor degree in Viticulture
and Master in Oenology. Laure is perfectly
placed to add her personal touch to the
Delphine
Glangetas
worked in a number of regions across France
before travelling to Australia to work for
Cape Mentelle and Yalumba. She returned to
France in 1996 to join James Herrick’s team in
Narbonne. During those years she acquired
a high sense of precision in winemaking
and trained her palate to modern wines.
After this, she spent five years with Domaine
Sainte Rose, a boutique winery near Pézenas,
managing the vineyard and designing high
quality wines mainly for the UK market. After
a few years as a consultant, Delphine moved
Faouzi Issa is one of
Lebanon’s youngest
winemakers. Born and
raised in the Bekaa valley,
his interest in wine began
at the age of 16 when
his family purchased
Domaine des Tourelles,
Lebanon’s oldest winery.
He studied winemaking at Montpellier and
during his Masters he worked in Côte-Rôtie
at Domaine René Rostaing before joining the
legendary Château Margaux, after which
he returned home to Lebanon in 2009 to
take over the winemaking at Domaine des
Tourelles. In the three years since he has been
working full time at Domaine des Tourelles,
his wines have begun to enjoy great success
on the international market and at wine
António Maçanita is one of
the leading winemakers
of his generation, who has
been surprising the wine
world with his modern
and refined wine styles.
He is the winemaker at 13
the Algarve, Including wineries such Quinta
de Sant’Ana and Fitapreta (his own project).
Leader of innovation and research, he was
Csaba Malatinszky
was Hungary’s leading
sommelier before turning
to winemaking in 1997.
He is obsessive about
tending his vines and says
his 30 hectares, farmed
organically in Villány
and Siklos since 2009, are as much as he’d
ever want to own as that’ll he can manage
himself without delegating. Malatinszky is
an experimental winemaker, who does not
follow the traditions but considers them in
his decision making. He is a conscious fan of
the Villány – Siklós terroir and his viticultural
philosophy is based upon the complexity of
the local environment. His focus is Cabernet
France, but he makes excellent whites,
New look at Russian wines
For the second time Russia presents the best
Russian wines in London. Diversity, quality,
freshness and tradition are the key definitions
of the modern Russian wines. The uniqueness
of the Russian wines is characterized by the
indigenous grape varieties, relatively cool
climate with the wide amplitude between
the day and night temperatures, small
precipitation during vegetation and peculiar
terroirs. The achievements of the Russian
winemakers and foreign consultants will be
demonstrated at the unique master-class.
The On-trade Theatre
Tuesday 22 May
10.30 – 11.30
Nicolas Joly, La Coulée de Serrant,
Savennieres, France
‘The Real Deal’
According the Nicolas Joly, the definition
“Best of the Best” belongs to the past. This
is what has pushed many winegrowers into
using technology to the point of obscenity.
This process obscures the natural beauty of
winemaking in the vineyard which should
respect hierarchies at different stages. Joly
insists that a wine should first come from
the matrix which bring life to our planet. It is
what is called “the expression of nature” ( soil
and climate ). Many so-called natural wines
are still using herbicides which kill the living
agents of the soil and prevent the roots from
feeding itself. Many are still using methods
which disturb the photosynthesis and taste
processes. The consumer has the right to
know if the “red fruit” flavour of the wine is
achieved through nature or aromatic yeast
genetic alternation.
Nicolas will do a talk. No wines. Invitation only.
The briefing at LIWF will focus on the ontrade
relevant findings in association with
Service
The Champagne Pour!
The finest Sommeliers in the country, all
competing to become the UK Sommelier
of the Year, have only 6 minutes to pour a
Magnum of Champagne into 16 glasses.
Each of the glasses must be filled at precisely
the same level. Once the sommelier has
moved to another glass he or she must not
return to a glass already filled and the bottle
must be empty at the end. Can it be done, on
stage in front of an audience?
The Academy Judges will award marks for
the skill of service, the accuracy and the
performance of the pour within the time limit.
Buyer be Aware
Frank Martell, Director
of Heritage Auction’s
Fine Wines Dept
will lead a candid
discussion about
what to look for to
help ensure a wine’s
provenance and
condition. If you think
that counterfeit wines
and the importance of
a wine’s provenance
affect only Petrus and DRC wine buyers, think
again. The trickle down effect tremendously
impacts the everyday consumer.
A recent counterfeiter arrest made headlines
and left the wine community in shock. Never
before has it been more important to be
able to demonstrate top provenance in the
secondary market, and never before has it
been more difficult to do so. The wine trade
faces a number of growing and emerging
challenges that simply did not exist only a
couple decades ago. From the changes and
conflicts inherent to modern distribution
models, through to storage conditions in the
US and Asian markets and of course, the
proliferation of fraudulent wines from Lafite to
Jacob’s Creek.
This discussion will encompass a relevant
tasting component, as well as an interactive
demonstration of how wines are tampered
with. Invitation only.
Ch Musar at the LIWF
The key to the complex character of Chateau
Musar Red is time: from harvest to release
each vintage spends a full seven years gently
developing (via vat, barrel and bottle) in the
Hochar family’s 18th century cellar north of
Beirut. So this year’s LIWF sees the launch of
the 2005, made from organically-produced
grapes slowly ripened to perfection through a
mild Bekaa Valley summer. This mellow, spicy
wine benefits from decanting and measured
appreciation. By contrast, the unoaked Musar
Jeune wines, in Red, White and Rosé, offer
appealing immediacy, their intense fruit
flavours reflecting their high-altitude origins
and wholly natural winemaking.
Serge, Ronald, Ralph, Marc and Gaston
Hochar, together with winemaker Tarek
2012 Wine Faults Workshop
REDUCTION – where have all the flavours
gone?
It’s often hard to put a
finger on why a wine
loses it’s ‘zing’..... difficult
to identify reductive
aromas, the tell-tale
sign that what’s in the
bottle has dulled. But what is ‘reduction? How
is it caused? And how can you spot it – at
different stages?
These are questions that occupy the minds
of the whole wine trade, from wine makers
to retailers and sommeliers. So come along
on Wednesday 23rd May to the Wine Faults
Workshop, conducted by well-known wine
scientist Pascal Chatonnet, where he will
examine the problem of reduction both
scientifically – and practically with wines in
the glass.
Sponsored by Amorim, the world’s largest
cork producer, this Workshop is one of
a regular series at successive London
International Wine Fairs that takes a factual
look at the various faults that can be found in
wine. And the reasons they occur.
There will be two sessions this year at London
International Wine Fair at ExCel, both held
in South Gallery Room 13. The first runs from
10.30am to 12 noon, and the second from 2.30
to 4pm.
Entry is free, but only by tickets issued
Now in its fifth year, LIWF and TastingBuddy have firmly
established The List as the world’s largest searchable wine
database used at any trade event.
Thousands of visitors each year use The List to find specific wines
to match their specific business needs: plugging gaps in wine lists;
increasing the number of lower alcohol wines; responding to the
growing demand for rosé; or simply sourcing that wonderful gem
yet to be discovered.
Faced with an ocean of wine – some 25,000 bottles – The List
enables you to whittle down those thousands of wines into a
concise, bespoke list that fits your needs. Most importantly it
allows you to browse all those wines in advance and decide which
you want to taste at the Fair.
You can search using a range of drop down search criteria,
including: country; region; grape variety; price point; organic; ABV;
style and closure. This means that if you are looking for, say, an
£8.99 organic Sauvignon with a screwcap, you can create a search
fitting these criteria, and produce a personalised tasting trail which
plots the location of each wine on the online interactive floorplan.
The List is now live at www.londonwinefair.com
selection when it is revealed on The Wine Gang stand H70 at 1pm on
Thursday 24 May.
The Wine Gang stand will also play host to a series of seminars during the
fair, focusing on two of the most talked-about concepts in today’s wine
business – lower alcohol and minerality. Each of the four seminars will be
hosted by a different member of The Wine Gang and will feature some of the
best wines currently available on the UK market.
Timings are: Lower Alcohol, 11am, 22 and 23 May; Minerality, 3pm, 22 and 23
