Summary
Listeria monocytogenes was investigated in a total of 200 products and 200 sea water
samples taken in 4 rounds from 25 bivalve mollusc stations approved by DG SANCO for
fishing and production. The FDA/BAM method was used in the work. As a result of
bacteriological analyses, there has been no bacterial isolataion from sea water and bivalve
mollusc samples from Çanakkale and Izmir Region. Bivalve mollusc samples from 5 out

were found to be free from any bacterial contaminant. L.
monocytogenes was isolated from, 21st station (Ostrea edulis) once, 64th station (Modiolus
barbatus) thrice, 66th station (Tapes deccussatus) once and 81st station (Donax trunculus)
once with a total of 6 isolations. In bivalve mollusc samples, the prevalence of L.
monocytogenes was found to be 3.3%.
One Listeria innocua isolate was obtained from the 63rd station (Ostrea edulis) in the
L. monocytogenes isolates were found to be of Serotype 4.
