ABSTRACT<br />

Babesiosis is a protozoal disease of wild and domestic animals including some rodents<br />

and humans. Disease is transmitted by Ixodidae tick vektors which are widely distributed in<br />

Turkey.<br />

This study was carried out in cattle in citties which are selected from various<br />

geographical regions of Turkey between 2006-2008 to determine the seroprevalence of<br />

Babesia bovis and B. bigemina. Serum samples were collected from a total of 3773 cattle in<br />

81 cities of Turkey. B. bovis and B. bigemina were investigated by Indirect Fluorescence<br />

Antibody (IFAT) test. In addition peripheral blood smears were prepared and examined under<br />

a microscope. The collected ticks from animals were identified in the laboratory.<br />

IFAT positives were found in 50.9% (B. bovis 24.5%, B. bigemina 16.9, B. bovis+B.<br />

bigemina 9.5%) of the tested animals. In the microscopic examination of peripheral blood<br />

smears, Babesia sp. were observed in the 718 (19%) of the 3773 cattle in Turkey and the<br />

differences were statistically significant (P
