From his website www.russpeak.com It's not often that you're able to find an award-winning comedy

entertainer, a captivating youth speaker, plus one of the nation's leading experts in psychological influence
and communication, all combined into one powerful package! So I would like to introduce you to Russ
influence, applied psychology, and a bit of theatrical illusion to present the 'experience' of mind reading,
extra sensory perception, precognition, clairvoyance, and mind control. In other words, if you've seen
shows like Lie To Me, Psych, or The Mentalist... that's what Russ does!!! Only funnier, and in person, but
he doesn't solve murders. Sorry. To see it for yourself: Check out Russ' videos here.
Just a reminder that the deadline for the WAEF scholarship is this
FRIDAY, MARCH 1st! Please contact the WAEF office with any
questions. Thank you for you for sharing the WAEF scholarship
application information with your students! As we believe you’re
aware, the WAEF application is now accessed through
www.thewashboard.org. We have had a few common questions from students and wanted to alert you to those.
1. WAEF has several applications on www.thewashboard.org . Each has unique
criteria. It is possible that a student may receive more than one “match” with
WAEF. Please encourage students to complete each application match they receive
from WAEF. They do not need to create any new information to do this. Students
should use the same letters of reference, short answers and essay questions for each WAEF application they
submit. They will receive individual consideration for each application they submit. Electing to complete just
one of multiple matches will reduce the number of awards they receive consideration for at WAEF.
2. To receive a match for the general WAEF scholarship application, students need to identify their
relationship with the tree fruit industry, if applicable. The general WAEF scholarship application is for students
who are employed in the tree fruit industry or whose parents are employed/connected to the tree fruit
industry. Students who plan to work in the tree fruit industry also receive consideration through the general
application. Students identify their tree fruit industry relationship in their washboard profile under the “personal
information” tab. The questions reads: “Do you or your parents work in or own a business in the any of these
industries?” Tree Fruit Industry is one of the options listed. It must be checked for the general WAEF
scholarship application to appear as a match. Students should only check this box if they or their parents

currently works for or own a company that deals with apples, cherries or pears or if the students plans to work in a
company that deals with apples, cherries or pears in the future.
3. A list of tree fruit industry companies offering scholarships through WAEF is listed under the Activities
tab. If a student has a parent or if the student themselves is employed with one of these firms, please have them
identify the relationship by selecting the company name. It is mandatory for some scholarships, not all WAEF
scholarships, that a parent be employed at one of these firms. Some of these employer based scholarships are
large. Students should carefully read the list.
4. In addition to the application, we request a number of attachments. Two of these attachment forms will
download to the student with the application. These two attachments must be completed, saved and attached to
the application. Both are fill-in pdf forms. Some students have struggled with this and we believe it depends on
the Adobe version they are using. If possible, please encourage students to download the newest free version of
Adobe Reader (http://www.adobe.com/products/reader.html). This issue has also occurred when the browser a
student is using isn’t compatible. They can switch to the Firefox browser and might find success. If nothing else
works, please have them submit the forms blank and then mail the completed versions to us. If they chose this
route, the completed forms must be postmarked by March 1, 2013.
5. We are already seeing on the applications submitted to us that grammar and punctuation is an
issue. Students might not realize that information directly from the profile they create populates on each of the
applications they prepare through thewashboard. Students need to complete their profile information in
preparation for it to appear on the application.
Please contact us if you have any questions. The WAEF application is due March 1st. Shellie Faulconer
If you have a question about Zillah High School or a guidance related question, please send your questions
to griffin_j@zsd.wednet.edu If the question would be of interest to others I will post them in our newsletter.
Q. When do we apply for the senior graduation awards (Academic Top 10, Honors Diploma,
Departmental Honor Awards)
A. Those award forms will become active the week following the end of Winter Semester Final Exams (March
11-15) and will be due April 22. We have to wait until grades for mid-term of Spring Semester (April 17) are
available since at time, believe it or not, some Seniors in past years dropped their academic load/and or focus
so we wait a few more weeks in the year before asking for completed forms.
Q. When will we know if we need to go to summer school?

A. If you failed any core course in English, Math, Science or Social Studies that is required for graduation that
should be made up before August 15, 2013. If you have the ability to change your spring semester schedule
and reschedule the failed class, do so immediately (add/drop closes this week). If not, then plan on doing an
afterschool, evening, weekend and/or summer program. If you would like more information, please stop in to
see Mr. Griffin or Mr. Torres. Do not delay on this as it could put you off track for on time graduation and
also if you do not have the skills needed to go on to next year’s core courses you are setting up a domino effect
on failure.
