sonal work. Toward the end of the
last century the portrayal of nature
began to disintegrate. An interesting
parallel in reverse is the slow and
difficult development of the abstract
decoration of the Han dynasty into
the realm of the Tang dynasty.
In addition to the growing disbelief
in the rationalistic world or the religious
world, there was the positive
growing belief in the fundamental elements
of visual art, those elements
always present if art is comprehensible,
though they are often inhibited.
I was impressed once, at an exhibition
of Cezanne’s, even in his work,
by the lack of color. The quality of a
work of art is produced by those elements
that are most visual; color, surface,
proportion and structure. The
more clear and dominant these are
the more clear and dominant the
quality of the work.
In the beginning of this century the
interest in the basic elements of art
became overwhelming. Realism became
a schematic vehicle or became
fragmented, except with the
Russians, who laudably spent little
time on the transition. Cubism,
which is fragmentation, became the
main issue. Fragmentation is a
breakdown, not a solution. At the
present it’s as naïve a philosophy as
realism. And, as happened with realism,
there are no first-rate artists
working with fragmentation. The
transitional nature of Cubism was
clear. The Russians aside, Mondrian
was the first artist to restore to art
the wholeness which is necessary to
it. Obviously, this was not back to
the wholeness of the picture window.
Mondrian was in New York during
the second war, as were other European
artists, but the possibilities provided
by his work do not seem to
have influenced the artists there. His
example was important; that is often
the greatest influence. The absence
of direct influence was probably due
to the particularity of Mondrian’s
style and philosophy, both being
idealistic, rationalistic and universalizing,
attitudes alien to the artists in
New York. Geometry, the pure primary
colors and the double space –
both flat and deep – were all alien.
Later, Mondrian’s relatively small
scale placed his work as early, while
Matisse’s large size and scale
placed his as almost contemporary.
The artists in New York preferred the
shallow, indefinite space of Miro
and the other surrealists. It was
vague compared to Mondrian’s
space but better suited to a loose
do, colocarlo en un cuadro y afirmar way of working. Also as an idea it
parecen haber influido en éstos. El
ejemplo que dio fue poderoso; esta es
con frecuencia la mayor influencia. Si
Still
colocaba, detrás de las grandes áreas
planas de sus pinturas, un espacio ambiguo.
Kline, Guston y De Kooning ampliaron
