made a quick left to descend into the
Masonic Lodge’s darkened, funhouse
sort of basement. Once their
eyes adjusted, viewers were coaxed
by artist Susan Chorpenning to pose
for a few moments, motionless, in
the rays of a projector. When the
projector moved automatically to the
next slide and the posers moved
away, their shadows lingered on the
wall in blocky silhouette, the images
captured briefly in the square of
phosphorescent paint applied to the
wall.
Down the block and left on Oak
Street is the Marfa Locker Plant,
where Julian Dashper had leaned
stretcher bars and triangles of canvas
against the walls and an interior
door of the space. The conceptual
work spurred a lively sidewalk debate
just in front of the entrance,
where one man, taller than the rest
in his group, hailed a friend walking
up to the Locker Plant. “There you
are,” he cried out to his friend. “I
was trying to explain this to them –
come talk to me about this work.”
On Saturday morning, symposium
visitors arrived at the AmVets Hall
and took their seats under the gaze
of dozens of photos of Marfa veterans
that lined the walls. After a welcome
from Chinati Director Marianne
Stockebrand, the lights
dimmed and the lectures began with
Kurt Forster’s explanation of lighting
effects in architecture. Robert Rosenblum,
who discussed the history and
growing presence of light in visual
art, followed Forster. Rosenblum
showed a multitude of slides as a
kind of timeline of light in art, from
de Dashper estaban instaladas en una
antigua fábrica a unos cuantas cuadras
máquina cambiaba automáticamente a
“Yo
an 1883 allegorical portrait of Mrs.
Cornelius Vanderbilt holding a luminous
torch to images of light bulbs
that crop up in Picasso’s work. He
linked Flavin into the timeline and
pointed out the artist’s keen appreciation
for the work that occurred before
his own. “It is a rather fascinating
topic to realize how closely
Flavin in these early works looked to
the painting of the period, to the
work of artists whom he admired,”
Rosenblum said. “He seems really
not to have had what Harold Bloom
calls the anxiety of influence, but
rather the reverse of it, a kind of
anxiety of veneration, in which he
constantly wanted to honor, as if at
a shrine, this or that awesome artist
figure or other kind of figure from
his young life in the 1950s and
60s.”
Michael Govan targeted Flavin’s
Marfa project and its relation to architecture.
The Marfa installation,
Govan said, was an integration of
color and space that bucked anything
one could call minimal. “There
is certainly an economy of means
but there is a maximum result in an
extraordinary way.”
Brydon Smith then spoke of Flavin’s
early work and Michael Venezia
rounded out the Saturday lectures
with a talk on Flavin’s participation
in the New York art scene of the
1950s and 60s.
Symposium speakers signed books
and chatted with visitors later that
afternoon, then Todd Young, Sam
Deese and Rupert Deese gave a poetry
reading at the Marfa Book
Company. Dinner that night was at
5
estaba tratando de explicarles esto.
Ven y háblame acerca de esta obra.”
La mañana del sábado, los visitantes al
simposio llegaron al Salón de los Veteranos
de Guerra y se sentaron bajo la
mirada de docenas de veteranos cuyas
fotografías colgaban en las paredes.
La directora de Chinati, Marianne Stockebrand,
pronunció las palabras de
bienvenida e inmediatamente comenzaron
las ponencias con la presentación
de Kurt Forster sobre los efectos de
la iluminación en la arquitectura. En seguida
habló Robert Rosenblum sobre la
importancia cada vez mayor de la luz
en la historia del arte visual. Rosenblum
enseñó una multitud de diapositivas
que trazaban una especie de cronología
de la luz en el arte, desde un
retrato alegórico del año 1883 en que
esposa de Cornelius Vanderbilt sostenía
una antorcha para encender focos
que aparecen en la obra de Picasso.
Rosenblum incorporó a Flavin dentro
de la cronología y enfatizó el aprecio
que este artista siempre sintió por quienes
le precedieron. “Es fascinante darnos
cuenta de lo mucho que dependía
Flavin de estas primeras obras de los
artistas a quienes admiraba”, comentó
Rosenblum.
