were often designed to preserve the
West Texas character of the original
structures, especially by using
adobe and cut stone walls. He also
retained the names of properties he
bought, including the Lujan House
and Casa Perez, and he supplied
Spanish-language names for La
Mansana, one of the houses in
which he resided, and for La Fundacion
Chinati (The Chinati Foundation),
which has advanced this spirit.
It serves the Marfa community
through a range of activities, including
offering free art lessons for local
accompanying economic revitalization,
SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST
BY JED PERL
Part of the magic of Chinati, as Judd
knew, comes straight out of the
parched Southwestern landscape,
which is probably the only area of
the United States where art, architecture,
and landscape form an ancient,
abiding unity...
The light of the Southwest animates
Judd’s mill aluminum surfaces, turning
them inky and dark in the shadows
and sometimes almost transparent-feeling
in the light, giving these
impassive abstract forms a naturalistic
dazzle.
…At Marfa, he designed beautiful
courtyards using adobe… The absoluteness
of his immense sculpture
projects at Marfa – the hundred aluminum
boxes and the series of fifteen
concrete structures that lies beyond
them, visible in the fields –
raises questions about the power of
abstract form to provoke emotion
that have preoccupied architects
and builders since ancient times,
and certainly in the Southwest.
…The miracle of Judd’s work is that
his variations push a visitor’s mind;
you are experiencing, in visual
terms, a symphonic tone poem…The
do a los arquitectos y constructores
effect is of a quietly exhilarating
delirium, with variations and divisions,
box to box, echoing in one’s
Chinati
Editions IV
The Chinati Foundation is pleased to
announce that John Wesley has created
four prints exclusively to benefit
the museum. Every other year, an
artist generously donates a printed
edition to Chinati. Previous Chinati
Editions were created by Edward
Ruscha (Intersecting Streets, 1999),
Robert Mangold (Orange/Black
Zone, 1997), and Claes Oldenburg
(Soft Rotating Capitol, 1995).
John Wesley’s work was the subject
of a retrospective exhibition curated
by Alanna Heiss for P.S.1 Contemporary
Art Center, New York in
2000. Additional recent solo exhibitions
were held at Fogg Art Museum,
Cambridge (2001); Texas
Gallery, Houston and Daniel Weinberg
Gallery, Los Angeles (2000);
and Jessica Fredericks Gallery, New
York (1998, 1999). Upcoming solo
exhibitions will be held at Gagosian
Gallery, London and Fredericks
Freiser Gallery, New York.
The Chinati Foundation organized a
large exhibition of Wesley’s paintings
and gouaches in 1998, and is
now preparing a permanent installation
of his work at the museum. Fifty
percent of the proceeds from the
sale of his benefit prints will be dedicated
to the realization of this new
John Wesley installation.
The four prints Wesley created for
Chinati Editions IV are: Busstop in
Downtown Iceland (4 color
silkscreen, 30 x 40”), B’s Stair (5
