in Flavin’s barracks, with its buzzing
colors, deadpan and industrial. A
visitor inclines to fill the empty space
of these buildings, as one fills Judd’s
boxes, with sentiment (skepticism,
insecurity, love, fear). They are
Rorschachs, exemplifying Minimalism’s
enduring resonance. Each
work enhances the other exponentially,
squaring Marfa’s effect, as
Judd clearly hoped would happen
20 years ago. The projects share an
American faith in visual empiricism
and also mirror Judd and Flavin’s relationship
to American art: the two
works play off each other as the two
men played off each other in life.
MINIMAL SCULPTURE,
MAXIMUM LIGHTS
BY ALIX OHLIN
…If Judd wanted to get away from
the traditional use of a gallery
space, Flavin’s project calls attention
to the space itself – the interior
container he was referring to. He
not only manipulates the space of
the barracks by closing off the passage;
he also (literally) highlights his
own manipulation. Some of the fluorescent
gates are recessed inside
slanted niches, so that the light escapes
from them and hits the wall.
There it forms a painting made of
sheer color, recalling Barnett Newman,
Flavin’s friend and mentor. It’s
a painting freed from the canvas
and the frame. If you walk up close
to it – entering, as you do, the world
of painting – the light alters your
perception of the air, the color of the
room, even the way your own skin
looks. Light in our culture is often associated
with spirituality, and
Flavin’s lights are also playful in the
brightness of their obviously commercial
colors.…
The effect is beautiful, and elusive.
The light carves space, and makes
you think about the architecture of
the long, empty room, and the wide,
empty landscape outside. Instead of
utilitarian decoration – the stuff of industrial
buildings and office cubicles
– the fluorescent light looks meditative
and ascetic. “No immediate
feeling can be attributed to color,”
Judd also wrote, and you bring your
own emotions to Flavin’s work. “Untitled
(Marfa Project)” doesn’t tell
(escepticismo, inseguridad, amor, miedo).
MINIMA ESCULTURA,
MAXIMA LUZ
POR ALIX OHLIN
…Si Judd quería alejarse del uso tradicional
del espacio de galería, el proyecto
de Flavin llama la atención sobre
el espacio mismo: es el contenedor interior
al que él se refería. Flavin no sólo
manipula el espacio dentro del cuartel
al cerrar el pasadizo, sino que hace
hincapié en esta misma manipulación.
Algunas de las puertas fluorescentes
están empotradas en los nichos diagonales,
de manera que la luz escapa de
ellas y rebota en la pared. Allí forma
una pintura hecha de puro color, recordando
la obra de Barnett Newman,
amigo y mentor de Flavin. Es una pintura
liberada del lienzo y el marco. Si
41
what you think. It doesn’t have a single,
overbearing conceptual point to
make, and this quality of withholding,
perhaps more than anything
else, accounts for its power.…
Walter Benjamin famously ascribed
the originality of a work of art to its
“aura” a force that could be diminished
by distance and reproduction.
At a time when every masterpiece
has its own postcard, when you can
look at art on the web without leaving
your home, Flavin’s lights insist
on direct experience. You have to
see them in person, and you have to
travel all the way to Marfa to do it.
It’s worth the trip.
THE CHINATI FOUNDATION
MARFA, TEXAS
BY DAVID RASKIN
…Like the other Minimalists who
were active in politically progressive
causes such as the Art Worker’s
Coalition, the War Resister’s League,
and Citizens for Local Democracy
during the ’60’s and ’70’s, Judd
hoped that we would apply this empirical
test to all areas of our lives.
Because it was meant to be experienced
in the moment, his art taught
that ideas that fail in experience
should be dismissed, whether those
ideas are about art, democracy, the
U.S. government, or the Vietnam
War. His involvement in local politics
underwent a radical shift in
context when he began living in
Marfa. By 1972, the Chicano movement
was well advanced, especially
in the border counties of West
Texas. However, no strong Chicano
leaders had emerged to galvanize
Marfa; rather toward the end of the
‘70s, the Chicano majority began
to take control of the political process
as it became clear that the Anglo
ranching community no longer
had the votes required to govern by
fiat.
Judd’s support of Chicano issues
mirrored the developments in Marfa.
When he first moved to Marfa, there
was evidently little respect for the
Chicano artisans and craftsmen living
there who worked with traditional
techniques. He employed them in
his architectural projects, which
progresistas (Art Worker’s
Coalition, War Resisters League, Citizens
chicanos fuertes que conmovieran Marfa;
pero hacia finales de los 70s la mayoría
chicana había empezado a apoderarse
Marfa. Cuando se trasladó por primera
vez a Marfa, había poco respeto por
los artesanos chicanos de la localidad,
los cuales trabajaban utilizando técnicas
tradicionales. Judd los empleó en
sus proyectos arquitectónicos, que a
menudo tenían el propósito de conser-
