the museums, and outside the
commercial gallery system. It involved
working with the landscape,
new buildings, designing furniture,
and painstakingly making and placing
thing is how well he has succeeded,
and how much, six years after his
death, it continues to grow. The barrack
over the landscape have become
a kind of Stonehenge. A
sitting down to tuck into burritos at
metropolitan figure of the director
THE LAST GREAT ART
OF THE 20TH CENTURY
BY MICHAEL KIMMELMAN
The last great work of the 20th-century
American art has just been finished
in this cattle town, a tumbleweed-tossed
speck in the high desert
plain near the Mexican border
known here as “el despoblado,” the
uninhabited place, 200 miles southeast
of El Paso. The work is by Dan
Flavin, the light artist, who before he
died in 1996 left instructions for
completing “Untitled (Marfa project)”.…
Marfa is no longer news to venturesome
art world types, who since the
mid-90’s have been making the pilgrimage
at a rate that now approaches
10,000 visitors to Chinati
a year, but this seems a good moment
to reconsider the place both
because of Flavin’s work and because
of the relevance of Judd’s
agenda today. Big-thinking characters…are
in too short supply in the
art world these days.... Judd, whose
work looks better as time goes by,
reminds us via his Marfa empire
what it is to take care unreservedly,
even maniacally, about art, which
he regarded as synonymous with
life, not peripheral to it.…
permanentemente a ellas. Es una idea
hermosa. (También arrogante? Claro,
colores–mitad cartelera publicitaria y
