COMMENTARY ON THE SYMPOSIUM WEEKEND BY STERRY BUTCHER
COMENTARIOS SOBRE EL FIN DE SEMANA DEL SIMPOSIO POR STERRY BUTCHER
A few years ago, after Donald Judd
died and a few months before Dan
Flavin succumbed to diabetes,
Flavin was interviewed for a BBC
documentary on Judd called “Big
Art in a One Horse Town.” In the
film, Flavin spoke movingly of his
admiration for his old friend’s work
and about the success of Judd’s
seemingly foolhardy plan to place
art permanently in Marfa’s isolated,
desert landscape. “The pilgrims will
come,” Flavin said, and he was
right.
The foundation has long been the
domain of Judd, and although many
knew that Flavin’s work was always
intended to be there too, only when
the artist’s six barracks of lights
opened in October 2000 did the expectation
that this was something
pretty good materialize into the full
blown knowledge that the project
went beyond a mere addition to the
museum. The light installation, it
turns out, came with an austere presence
and profound resonance that
stands equal in scope and thoughtfulness
to Judd’s work at Chinati –
enormous and important and lovely.
During the first weekend of last May,
hundreds of people traveled to Marfa
for the foundation’s “Light in Architecture
and Art” symposium, looking
to learn more about Flavin and
his work. The arrival here of the capacity
crowd underscored the
work’s enormity, importance and
loveliness, and the symposium’s
buzzing popularity said this: there’s
a shift taking place – the pilgrims
who Flavin predicted came all right,
but they’ve started to come for
Flavin as well as Judd.
It is perhaps unfashionable to call
the atmosphere surrounding this
symposium merry, but that’s really
what it was. This unusual level of
high spirits is perhaps unspent goodtime
energy that had been stored up
since October 2000, when Chinati’s
annual Open House event had the
misfortune to be hit by a brutal
norther that left the whole town
ashiver and sheathed in ice. Though
the staff scrambled to re-arrange
and re-organize that weekend’s
events, and Open House goers
faced the unexpected weather with
ingenuity and good nature, only the
most intrepid visitors spent much
time looking at art.
The story was different for the symposium
weekend. Three Chinati
Artists in Residence – Emi Winter,
Susan Chorpenning and Julian
Dashper – had simultaneous openings
at three locations downtown Friday
evening. Winter and Chorpenning’s
shows were on different floors
of the same building, while Dashper’s
was a couple blocks away at
the Marfa Locker Plant.
Winter, typically a painter, called
her show of blended, striped prints
“an experiment, a departure.” A
woman wearing rose-colored glasses
stood for a long while staring at a
set of Winter’s cool, ice-cream colored
prints near the front window.
She left for a moment and returned
arm in arm with her husband. “Just
look at these,” she told him.
People exited Winter’s show and
4
bre pasado dentro de seis antiguos
cuarteles militares. La instalación lumínica
de Flavin es una presencia austera
que produce una resonancia profunda,
igualando en su alcance e intensidad
artística las obras tan enormes, importantes
y hermosas que Judd dejó en
Chinati.
Winter, Susan Chorpenning y
Julian Dashper–en tres lugares distintos
del centro de Marfa. Las obras de
Winter y Chorpenning se exhibían en
pisos distintos del mismo edificio; las
