LIGHTS OF THE DESERT
BY LAURA MOFFATT
Big Bend
Sentinel,
Some very unusual things happened
in west Texas last week. For one, the
weather switched from temperatures
in the 90’s to an onslaught of snow
and wind that froze the trees and
cacti into glassy ice structures. The
other events were no less spectacular,
if less unexpected. Some 1,400
people attended the annual open
house weekend held by the Chinati
Foundation in Marfa, a town of approximately
2,500 inhabitants set
high in the Chihuahuan desert. Although
some of the events were unraveled
by the tempestuous weather,
the inauguration of Dan Flavin’s Untitled
(Marfa project) dazzled all the
more brilliantly.…
DAN FLAVIN
BY LIBBY LUMPKIN
…Suffice it to say that everything
about the location conspires to encourage
the nostalgic and the mystically
inclined. As a consequence,
the achievement of Dan Flavin’s Untitled
(Marfa project), 1996, permanently
installed at the Chinati in
October, is doubly impressive. The
work, whose design was completed
by Flavin shortly before his death in
1996, has no more difficulty cutting
through the romantic, land artaesthetic
fog generated by Marfa’s
exotic locale than his earliest fluorescent
lamp pieces had in dispensing
with the 2,000 year-old association
of luminescence with mysticism
and spirituality. In fact, the monumental
size of Flavin’s Marfa project,
which occupies six buildings
and a total of 36,000 square feet,
and the peculiarities of its systematic
design suggest that the skeptic
Flavin took the opportunity at the
end of his career to reassert, on a
grand, theatrical scale, the resolute
secularism with which his career
had begun….
sin explicación aparente, satisfaciendo
tan sólo el requisito más fundamental
de la variación. En lugar de algún mítico
cordón umbilical, esta obra de Flavin
se manifiesta llanamente como lo
que es: las menos misteriosas entre las
luces, ubicadas todas en medio de la
nada.
Así, el Proyecto Marfa, halagador y seductivo
y al mismo tiempo desconcertante
y esquivo, conduce a sus peregrinos
al mismo callejón sin salida donde
se encontraba Wittgenstein tras años
de contemplar el color. En sus últimos
escritos, que inspiraron a mediados del
siglo veinte el resurgimiento de la tradición
que ha venido llamándose la filosofía
minimalista, Wittgenstein no tuvo
Seguramente
el interés en Flavin y muchos
de sus contemporáneos–particularmente
Ellsworth Kelly, Bridget Riley y
