That is the Flavin Effect: grandeur
and banality in equal measure.
It is fitting, then, that Dan Flavin’s
Untitled (Marfa Project), a light installation
that constitutes his magnum
opus, should now occupy six remodeled
barracks in Marfa
(population 2,500), ranged across
the naked steppe of far southwest
Texas, where grandeur and banality
flicker on the tides of one’s own selfesteem.…
Natural and fluorescent light segue
into one another down the length of
each room. In six rooms 16 fluorescent
fixtures and their counterparts
in reverse colors blaze like a Basie
horn section. In the other six, portals
illuminated by occluded fixtures
glow and blend like fragments of
Satie remembered. The net effect of
Flavin’s spectacle, seen in conjunction
with Judd’s 100 mill-aluminum
boxes, installed nearby in two converted
artillery sheds, is an understanding
that Flavin and Judd, in
their maturity, were no more Minimalist
than Palladio was – that they
were, all three, classicists of
exquisite refinement, employing a finite
set of maneuvers within a restricted
field of materials to produce
oeuvres of infinite variety.
MARFA,
THE CHINATI FOUNDATION
BY JEFF KOPIE
Judd had an awesome confidence
(his detractors call it egotism)
backed up by real aesthetic achievement
and a formidable intelligence.
The main reason for his move to
Texas – and for the subsequent creation
of the Chinati Foundation –
was that Marfa offered him an opportunity
to take his work further
and gave the work a chance to endure.
The move had a strong political
aspect as well, for in Marfa,
Judd was able to develop and sustain
the economic strength needed
to put his ideas about society and
the economy to work. No significant
artist of Judd’s generation went further
in combining his art with constructive
political and societal engagement.…
In the last year of his
life, many of Judd’s works were
made in Marfa, and the vast majori-
toservicio.
37
ty of his income was poured into
property and installations in the
town. The economic benefits of his
activity, in a town with a 30+ percent
unemployment rate, shouldn’t
be forgotten.
Chinati’s uniqueness is based in its
idea of permanence, in the idea of art
before everything else. Current contemporary
art museums assert the
wonders of their architecture or the
creative contortions of their curatorial
teams. Art either gets lost, or
becomes beside the point…. With its
remote location and the specificity of
its purpose, the Chinati Foundation
can’t afford much in the way of curatorial
or architectural spectacle. This
is both its greatest strength and what
sets it apart from other museums.
...In 1998, the Lannan Foundation
established two houses for writers’
residencies in Marfa, and a group
of affluent Houstonians have been
buying up unused commercial and
residential properties throughout
town. Incredibly, Marfa now has a
good bookstore with a wine bar (!)
right beside City Hall...
THE CHINATI FOUNDATION:
A MUSEUM IN PROCESS
BY DAPHNE BEAL
At the outset, Judd had conceived
the institution as a museum for just
three artists – himself, [Dan] Flavin
and [John] Chamberlain – that
would permanently show large-scale
works (or large groups of work) in
thoughtfully selected spaces. In time,
the idea grew to include works by
others, which were either donated
by the artists, bought by Judd for
Chinati, owned by Judd and loaned
to Chinati, or, in some cases, jointly
owned by him and Chinati. …
For Chinati, Judd created his 1982-
1986 masterwork, the 100 mill-aluminum
boxes installed in the big,
light-filled spaces of modified military
storage buildings…. At Chinati,
too, he worked out much of his architectural
thinking, altering buildings
once dedicated to military use
so that the new exhibition spaces retained
their history without being
limited by it. At the same time, he
was designing, renovating and reconfiguring
his living and working
spaces in the many buildings he
gran mayoría de sus ingresos fueron
canalizados hacia propiedades e instalaciones
creatividad de sus curadores;
obras a gran escala (o
grandes grupos de obras) en espacios
cuidadosamente seleccionados.
arquitectura, modificando antiguos
edificios militares para crear espacios
de exhibición que conservaran su historia
sin verse limitados por ella. Al
mismo tiempo se entregaba a la tarea
de diseñar, renovar y reconfigurar los
espacios donde vivía y trabajaba en
varios edificios de su propiedad en
Marfa. “Su medio era el espacio”, co-
