One Decade
of Artists in
Residence at
the Chinati
Foundation
The Chinati Foundation’s Artist in
Residence Program was initiated
about ten years ago, when Donald
Judd invited John Wesley to spend
some time in Marfa to paint. The
Chinati Foundation continued to
host a small number of artists during
the early 1990s. Since 1994, five or
six artists from around the world are
in residence at Chinati for periods of
two to three months each. Living in
an apartment on the museum
grounds and typically working in
Chinati’s Locker Plant building in
downtown Marfa, the artists are
able to spend time in a stimulating
yet contemplative environment. They
also contribute great vitality to the
museum and the town, and opening
receptions of the residents’ work
have become popular events in the
local community.
Past newsletters have featured lists
and photographs of current resident
artists. We take the opportunity here
to give an overview of past residents
and provide an update on their recent
exhibitions, publications, and
other projects.
Listed alphabetically, the names are
followed by the artist’s country of
origin and year of residency.

1998: During the past three years,
Degenhard has had several solo
shows of his paintings and works on
paper, includings shows at Galerie
Michael Schneider, Bonn, Germany;

Germany; and Galerie Jette
Rudoph, Berlin, Germany. His most
recent exhibition at marquart

of the same title. Outside of
Germany, his work has recently
been shown in group shows at Petra
