SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS (Cont.)
James W. McDermott, Jr., Memorial
Scholarship Fund (1994)
The James W. McDermott, Jr., Memorial Scholarship
Fund was established as a memorial to Jimmy,
an excellent student, Eagle Scout and musician.
Annual scholarships are awarded in his name to
college-bound Berlin High School seniors with a
cumulative high school average of 80 or better, and
current or prior membership in one or more high
school organizations including band, drill team,
color guard, chorus or drama club.
Kimberly R. Miller Scholarship Fund
(2004)
The Kimberly R. Miller Scholarship Fund was
established as a permanent memorial to Kimberly,
a 2003 graduate of Berlin High School who courageously
battled cancer for more than three and onehalf
years. This scholarship is for graduating seniors
who have been members of the Berlin High School
Girls Swim Team for a minimum of two years.
Kim Miller Synchronized Swimming
Scholarship Fund (2006)
The Kim Miller Synchronized Swimming Scholarship
Fund was established by the Hamden Heronettes
synchronized swim team to keep Kim’s memory
alive, while supporting the continuing career of a
synchronized swimmer in the East Zone at the
collegiate level. Many donors, including swimmers
from throughout the East Zone, are supporting
the Fund.
Linda Blogoslawski Mlynarczyk
Memorial Scholarship Fund (1998)
The Linda Blogoslawski Mlynarczyk Memorial
Scholarship Fund was established by family and
friends of Linda following her death in 1998. Linda
was elected the first woman mayor in the history of
the City of New Britain in 1993. She was valedictorian
of New Britain High School, Class of 1978, and
this fund will provide college scholarships for all
future class valedictorians at the school.

Inc. Scholarship Fund (1999)
The New Britain General Hospital School of Nursing
Alumni and Associates, Inc. Scholarship Fund was
established as a tribute to the graduates of the
nursing school to encourage and assist students
from high schools in New Britain in their pursuit of
a nursing career.
Peter G. Perakos, Sr., Scholarship
Fund (1995)
The Peter G. Perakos, Sr., Scholarship Fund was
established in memory of Mr. Perakos, a long-time
resident of New Britain and an avid New Britain
High School football fan. It awards two scholarships
annually to graduating seniors who are
football players at NBHS and who have demonstrated
football achievement and contributed to
the team; exhibited character and high moral
standing at school, home and in the community;
and who are members in good standing of the
graduating class.
Harold C. Rahm Memorial
Scholarship Fund (1993)
The Harold C. Rahm Memorial Scholarship Fund
was established by bequest to award two
scholarships annually to a young man and
woman at New Britain High School planning to
pursue a college education.
Dr. Lorraine G. Spranzo Scholarship
Fund (1999)
The Dr. Lorraine G. Spranzo Scholarship Fund is a
permanent memorial to Dr. Spranzo, a New Britain
native and 1967 graduate of the New Britain
General Hospital School of Nursing. Dr. Spranzo
was motivated by a deep regard for the needs of
others, and achieved academic, clinical, and
personal excellence in the profession of nursing.
This scholarship will give financial aid annually to
registered nurses pursuing an advanced degree in
nursing, particularly community health nursing
and nursing informatics.

Scholarship Fund (2006)
The Dennis J. Stanek, Sr., Memorial Scholarship
Fund was established as a tribute to Dennis’ life
and to his love of community. Children, sports,
the University of Connecticut and the town of
Southington were among the things that were
important to Dennis, a beloved Southington
community leader who passed away in late 2005
following a brief illness. The fund will provide
scholarships to Southington residents graduating
from Southington High School who participate in
varsity sports and/or have significant records of
community service, and will attend the University
of Connecticut. It will also provide “camperships”
for Southington children, allowing them to attend
the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs’
Camp Sloper.
Harry L. Stromquist Memorial
Scholarship Fund (1997)
The Harry L. Stromquist Memorial Scholarship Fund
was established by his nephew, C. Jeffrey Herre, as
a memorial to his uncle who lived his life in New
Britain. Mr. Stromquist followed sports at New
Britain High School, where he co-captained the
state champion 1924 football team. The scholarship
is awarded annually to a member of the
senior class, who is a varsity football player at New
Britain High School, and who is planning to pursue
a degree at an accredited four-year college or
university.
Harold M. Sussman Memorial
Scholarship Fund (1992)
The Harold M. Sussman Memorial Scholarship Fund
was established to commemorate the importance
Mr. Sussman attached to higher education. Two
scholarships are given annually to graduating
seniors, one at New Britain High School and one
at Berlin High School, who are planning to pursue
a degree at an accredited four-year college or
university.
