Initiative Fund (2006)
The Southington Science and Mathematics
Initiative Fund (SSMI) is fulfilling the vision of a
group of motivated parents. SSMI is working with
Southington’s public schools to enrich, enlighten
and engage Southington students. Its aim is to
encourage the next generation of scientists,
mathematicians and engineers by providing a
way for individuals, companies and others to
make tax-deductible contributions to help the
school district.

Spirit of Beth Telfer Memorial Fund
(1999)
The Spirit of Beth Telfer Memorial Fund was established
by Beth’s friends after her death in a tragic
accident. The purpose of the fund is to provide
annual grants in Southington and surrounding
communities to perpetuate Beth’s dedication to
making a difference. It will support the concerns
that prevailed throughout most of Beth’s adult life,
including child development, emotional health of
individuals and families, adult personal growth and
creating a community of spirit and concrete action
built on sharing, honesty and service.

Fund (1997)
The Leonard W. and Jeannette C. Varkal Fund
was established by Jeannette C. Varkal, a CPA and
resident of New Britain, upon the death of her
husband. Jeannette intended this donor advised
fund to be a step toward implementing the couple’s
thoughts on philanthropy and giving back to the
community. Grants are made primarily in the area
of education, including literacy programs and
acquisition of books for the public library.
Family, education and New Britain were close to the hearts
of Stefania (Kostrzewska) and Antoni Bialkowski. Though
neither was the beneficiary of a higher education, it was a
constant topic of conversation at the family dinner table,
and both fully recognized the impact it could have on the
fortunes of both those benefitting from such education, as
well as the community at large.
The Bialkowskis were property owners in New Britain and
always envisioned the city as a vibrant place to live, work
and raise a family. They were bullish on the city, and invested
significantly in multiple apartment dwellings. The couple
and their seven children faithfully worshipped at Sacred
Heart Church, and all of the Bialkowski children are alumni
of Sacred Heart School.
This fund was established by the Bialkowski children in
tribute to their parents, and will support Sacred Heart School,
financial aid for students attending the school, and financial
aid for Sacred Heart graduates attending Catholic high
schools.
