For Georgia Knapp Thomson,<br />
community service was both<br />
duty and privilege. Born and<br />
raised in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong>, she<br />
made her life one <strong>of</strong> aiding<br />
others in need. Following<br />
a scholastic career at Wellesley<br />
College and Columbia<br />
Georgia Knapp Thomson<br />
University’s School <strong>of</strong> Business,<br />
as well as four years <strong>of</strong> working in <strong>New</strong> York City, Georgia<br />
came back to her hometown at the start <strong>of</strong> World War II.<br />
She directed the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> the American Red<br />
Cross until war’s end, and volunteered for many years<br />
afterward following disasters throughout the east including<br />
floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. Upon her death at<br />
age 92 in <strong>2006</strong>, she was the longest-serving member <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong>’s First Church <strong>of</strong> Christ Congregational.<br />
This fund, established by Georgia prior to her death to<br />
benefit the <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong> community, will be used<br />
to make grants at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s board<br />
<strong>of</strong> directors.<br />
