MBSC Newsletter august 2012
This is the first
addition of a planned
semi-annual Midwestern
Business Study Council
Newsletter. With the
renewed emphasis on the
growth and development of
the mbsc it was felt that
a newsletter would be
beneficial in providing more
current information related
to members and meetings.
Spring 2012 Meeting:
Host – Dean Clausen
At the conclusion of each meeting, I will ask the host to prepare a summary
of the event. Dean Clausen respectfully and humbly submitted the following
summary of the May 2012 MBSC meeting:
The Spring 2012 Meeting of The Midwest Business Study Council met in
Champaign on May 22nd and 23rd. Attendance was good with 22–26 members
participating in some or all of the events. On Tuesday the 22nd, we met for lunch
and golf at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club. This was billed as a
warm-up and practice round for THE event on Wednesday at Champaign Country
Club. As usual, the group assembled for dinner, wine, and wind on Wednesday
evening. The dinner was marked by a toast to Jim Ballsrud who recently retired.
On Wednesday morning, the group assembled for breakfast and a presentation
from Dale Aupperle, CEO of Heartland Ag Group based in Decatur, Illinois. Dale’s
presentation focused on the dramatic increase in farmland values, and more
importantly, his view on where those values are headed in the future. From the
feedback received, the presentation was informative and well received.
After a warm up, the 5 assigned teams hit the course at Champaign for a
grueling test of skill and endurance. Team 1A, lead by Dean Clausen outplayed
the other competitors by positing a score of 17 under. As mentioned, Dean Clausen
deftly led his team of Terry Flynn, John Galarnyk, and Greg Greime to an
overwhelming victory, with 10 under posted by some other team. Skill competitions
were won by Mike Sullivan with a long putt of 4 ft., and Jim Rudwall landing his
tee shot on number 3 closest to the pin. It was, however, the skill and leadership
as well as exemplary course management exhibited by Dean Clausen and his 25
handicap, along with strong support from Terry, John, and Greg that brought home
the big winnings.
Finally, there was concern expressed among the attendees that the combination
of food throwing, questionable joke telling, lewd and perhaps insensitive language,
and the need to have the bar tender and staff on site until 1:30 in the morning,
might have caused host Dean Clausen to be forced to abrogate his membership at
Champaign Country Club. To date, no letter that starts… ”Dear Mr. Clausen, it has
come to our attention,” has been received. Time will tell.
Thank you, Dean, for a very successful meeting.

MBSC Newsletter
Member Bios: John Galarnyk
Biographies of one or two members will be included with each newsletter. This
should help members get to know each other better and provide members with
business background information when assistance is needed. John Galarnyk was
asked to provide his bio for this first edition of the newsletter. Thanks, John, for
getting us started.
John was born and raised in a small town into Wisconsin in a large family of
a general practice physician and a loving stay-at-home mother. John watched his
father manage and operate his general medical practice with a holistic approach
with a confidential, nurturing and positive bedside manner.
After attending University of Wisconsin-Madison and the John Marshall Law
School in a Chicago, he embarked on his legal career practicing in the litigation
department of small and mid-sized law firms. In 2001, John formed Galarnyk &
Associates, Ltd., modeling his firm after his father’s medical practice, intent upon
providing a holistic approach to law with a confidential, nurturing and positive
bedside manner.
John has become an accomplished general practice lawyer and civil litigator.
Possessing knowledge, experience, drive and unique problem solving capabilities,
John is the ideal lawyer for individuals, families and small and medium sized
businesses facing problems that require personal, creative and confidential
solutions. With 25+ years of experience, John has a proven track record of building
teams of professionals to provide expertise for his clients in various jurisdictions
and in difference forums across the country on behalf of an impressive list of past
and present clients.
In 2008, John attended Northwestern University’s School of Continuing Studies
where he received a certificate in Investigation And Prevention of Commercial
Fraud. The course work included significant attention to computers, electronic
stored information and electronic discovery, which has been incorporated into the
firm’s expertise.
John’s innate problem solving abilities, unique skills and
personal touch have allowed him to win over potential clients
who were looking for representation from much larger law
firms. They find that his smart, tough, thoughtful, and personal
approach best leads to their desired and winning results.
John is actively involved in his two children’s schools, and in
various charitable entities and endeavors.
MBSC Newsletter
MBSC
Membership
Policy
Reminders
The following items were included
in a membership mailing in early
2012 from Bob Peele and Jim Rudwall.
They are worth repeating.
1. While we want all members to
commit to and prioritize MBSC, we
will continue to observe MBSC’s
policy of “two missed meetings in two
years and you’re out”;
2. We will continue to observe our policy
regarding awards won at our golf
tournaments: If you leave early, you
lose the award to the Speaker’s Fund;
3. We invite members to offer highquality
individuals for membership in
MBSC. Please email Bob Peele a brief
background of the individual and
why you think he would make a good
member. Bob will then submit all
names to the Membership committee
for their consideration;
4. In view of the fact that most private
clubs enforce a policy limiting the
number of golf guests at outings
during normal business hours, at ALL
future meetings, we will be operating
on a FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVE
basis. No forgiveness will be given to
procrastinators;
5. As previously discussed, if you have
ideas about adding new golf and/or
social events for MBSC members,
including out-of-town venues, feel free
to bring them to our next meeting.
Inability to attend these “off balance
sheet” events will NOT count towards
the “miss” policy;
6. Importantly, we always welcome new
and innovative ways to grow and
improve the quality of our storied
organization. Long time MBSC’ers
and new members alike are strongly
encouraged to take “ownership” in
the growth and development of the
Midwest Business Study Council.
Current
Membership List
Jim Rudwall, Secretary of MBSC, has
the difficult task of maintaining an
up-to-date membership list. Attached is
the latest list. Please review and provide
“Rud” with any updated information.
Editor’s Comments
Please send me any recommendations
you may have to improve this newsletter
(that are within my abilities). I already
know I need to improve the quality of
our pictures My intent in the future is to
distribute the newsletter midway between
the Fall and Spring meetings.
