Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends <strong>of</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong>,<br />

As we refl ect on the past year at <strong>The</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong>, we are amazed<br />

at the changes that took place - changes that enabled us to provide our young women<br />

with the opportunity to grow and reach their potential in every aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

life. <strong>The</strong> changes touched each student each day.<br />

What we fi nd most remarkable is what has not changed – the continued support you<br />

show us each year, and your efforts to give back to <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> so that our students<br />

will continue to receive a quality, college preparatory education in the Franciscan<br />

tradition.<br />

Annual giving is important because, like most independent schools, the cost <strong>of</strong> tuition<br />

at <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> does not cover the cost <strong>of</strong> educating your daughters. To close the<br />

gap, we need the help <strong>of</strong> the entire <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> community. Each year we ask that<br />

100% <strong>of</strong> our current parents, faculty and staff, administration, past parents, trustees,<br />

and alumnae make a gift to the Annual Fund at whatever level possible. Every gift<br />

is important and every gift is appreciated. Your generosity sends a message to other<br />

funding sources, such as foundations, that you believe in and support our mission <strong>of</strong><br />

empowering young women – an important factor when applying for grants.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> you have just begun your partnership with <strong>The</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Baltimore</strong> while others cannot remember a time when the <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> family was<br />

not an integral part <strong>of</strong> your own. Just the simple act <strong>of</strong> donating to the 2009-2010<br />

Annual Fund, Honoring the Past, Building the Future, is a testament to your great<br />

Empowered by Gospel values and rooted in the<br />

spirit and tradition <strong>of</strong> Saints Francis and Clare <strong>of</strong><br />

Assisi, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong>, a<br />

sponsored institution <strong>of</strong> the Sisters <strong>of</strong> St. Francis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Philadelphia, is dedicated to the education<br />

Programs<br />

Gifts <strong>of</strong> Cash. A gift <strong>of</strong> cash is the<br />

most common gift, <strong>of</strong>ten given in the<br />

form <strong>of</strong> a personal check payable to<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong>.<br />

Credit card gifts are becoming more<br />

popular because <strong>of</strong> our on-line<br />

capabilities and the rewards <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />

particular credit card companies. Many<br />

donors prefer to make a pledge as it<br />

gives them the opportunity to complete<br />

their gift over a period <strong>of</strong> time.<br />

Gifts <strong>of</strong> Stock. A gift <strong>of</strong> stock may be<br />

transferred to <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong>, avoiding<br />

capital gains tax.<br />

Gifts <strong>of</strong> Property. <strong>The</strong>re are several<br />

options available when dealing with<br />

real estate. An outright gift <strong>of</strong> a house,<br />

land, or vacation property avoids capital<br />

gains tax and entitles the donor to a tax<br />

deduction for the full value <strong>of</strong> the gift.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are also options that allow the<br />

donor to give property and retain the use<br />

<strong>of</strong> it for his or her lifetime.<br />

Matching Gifts. More than 1,000<br />

companies participate in matching gift<br />

programs. Many times, a gift can have a<br />

double effect because <strong>of</strong> an employer’s<br />

matching gift. When making this type<br />

<strong>of</strong> gift, a donor must mail the matching<br />

gift form provided by his or her human<br />

resources department with the gift.<br />

Gifts Planned for<br />

the Future<br />

Bequests. This is a gift made by a<br />

provision in one’s will naming <strong>Catholic</strong><br />

<strong>High</strong> as benefi ciary. It can reduce estate<br />

tax.<br />

Charitable Gift Annuity. This gift<br />

allows the donor to receive benefi ts for<br />

his or her lifetime and to qualify for a<br />

charitable tax deduction. This form <strong>of</strong><br />

support is attractive when one has highly<br />

appreciated assets.<br />

Charitable Remainder Trusts. This<br />

form <strong>of</strong> support transfers assets to a<br />

trustee, who in turn manages the trust<br />

and pays income back to the donor for<br />

life, or for a specifi c period <strong>of</strong> time.<br />

When the trust terminates, the remainder<br />

passes to the school. Benefi ts include<br />

an income tax deduction, the avoidance<br />

<strong>of</strong> capital gains tax (when appreciated<br />

securities are used), as well as an estate<br />

tax reduction.<br />

Life Insurance. If <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> is<br />

named as the owner and benefi ciary <strong>of</strong> a<br />

life insurance policy, the policy becomes<br />

eligible for a tax deductible gift.<br />

Open House 2010 brings big numbers<br />

On Saturday, November 6, over 170 prospective students visited <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong>’s<br />

halls and classrooms. Over 50 student ambassadors acted as tour guides walking<br />

the guests through the school and giving them pertinent information about classes,<br />

curriculum, and athletics.<br />

Parents and students were impressed and amazed at the new technology that is<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered and used by students and teachers<br />

in the classrooms. English faculty members<br />

Mrs. Karen Gracki Mitchell ’92 and Mrs.<br />

Sharon Johnston demonstrated the use <strong>of</strong> the<br />

AverPens with students. <strong>The</strong> AverPen combines<br />

interactive products such as an interactive<br />

white board, student response systems,<br />

and wireless slates. <strong>The</strong>y can be used on any<br />

surface, giving the teacher and students the<br />

ability to interact freely in the classroom and<br />

move around while doing so. Teachers are not<br />

restricted to one white board or projector and<br />

students can more readily participate in classwork.<br />

Ms. Dianne Bridickas Kestler ’80, with the<br />

help <strong>of</strong> two student volunteers, showed <strong>of</strong>f<br />

the new enTourage eDGe TM dualbook that<br />

will be piloted in spring 2011 with a small<br />

group <strong>of</strong> current students. This new technology<br />

combines the use <strong>of</strong> an e-reader and<br />

iPad, allowing students to read on one side<br />

and write, access the internet, etc. on the<br />

other. We look forward to providing each<br />

incoming freshman with an enTourage eD-<br />

Ge TM in the 2011-2012 school year.<br />

Technology students also showed the middle school students and their parents the<br />

mini netbooks available to students.<br />

“I couldn’t have been more pleased about how everything came together that day,”<br />

said Ms. Brooke Sterrett, Director <strong>of</strong> Admission. “It was the culmination <strong>of</strong> many<br />

peoples’ hard work and dedication. <strong>The</strong> building looked great and everyone’s<br />

enthusiasm was soaring. Probably the most exciting aspect for me was how much<br />

technology was being utilized by each department.”<br />

Fall 2010 Wrap-Up<br />

AUTUMN NIGHT GALA: An Evening for the Stars<br />

On Saturday, October 9, 2010 over 200 parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends <strong>of</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> enjoyed an elegant evening showcasing the new Sr. Arnoldine<br />

O’Connell, OSF Dining Hall. Attendees were greeted in style at the entrance to the new Gallery by a red carpet and student escorts. <strong>The</strong> money raised throughout the evening<br />

in the silent auction and raffl es benefi ts academic programs, tuition assitance, and capital improvements. We thank all who supported this evening and look forward<br />

to another successful event in 2011.<br />

Alumnae Memorial Mass<br />

Alumnae gathered on Saturday, October 30, 2010 to honor deceased alumnae and to celebrate their <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> roots. <strong>The</strong> President’s Reception followed honoring<br />

those donors who generously support <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> with monetary donations and are members <strong>of</strong> the President’s Circle.<br />

Community Service Day<br />

<strong>The</strong> entire school community participated in <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong>’s 10th Annual Community Service Day on Friday, October 8, 2010. Participating locations included Belvedere<br />

Adult Day Care, Herring Run, <strong>The</strong> Red Cross, Our Daily Bread, St. Elizabeth’s Nursing Home, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society <strong>of</strong> Maryland, Salvation Army, Tree<br />

<strong>Baltimore</strong>, Irvine Nature Center, and Gribbin Center among others.<br />

STEM Day<br />

Forty middle school girls from Our Lady <strong>of</strong> Victory, St. Jane Frances, St. Stephen’s in Bradshaw, St. Michael the Archangel in Overlea, St. Ursula’s, St. Joseph Fullerton,<br />

and Lamb <strong>of</strong> God came to <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> on Saturday, November 20, 2010 to learn about the STEM Program. <strong>The</strong>y also participated in various STEM activities such as<br />

building a prosthetic arm and creating solar energy.<br />

IHM Day<br />

Twenty middle school students from Immaculate Heart <strong>of</strong> Mary visited <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> on Monday, November 29, 2010 to learn more about the school. <strong>The</strong>y were able to<br />

visit classes and had the opportunity to participate in gym class, a special STEM class project <strong>of</strong> creating solar powered bubble blowers, and to read the announcements<br />

on TCHS-TV during homeroom.<br />

<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> students successfully performed the dramatic play, 12 Angry Women, November 12-14, 2010.<br />

Powder Puff<br />

<strong>The</strong> seniors, dressed in their class colors purple and silver, battled it out with the juniors, in their class colors orange and teal, in the annual Powder Puff Football Game<br />

on November 11, 2010 at Herring Run Park. It was a fun and entertaining game won by seniors 46-6.<br />

Christmas Project<br />

If you graduated prior to the 1980’s, you probably remember getting a letter from TCHS every fall. It contained letters and numbers that matched a master list <strong>of</strong> needy<br />

children and seniors. You were asked to buy the item mentioned and then return it to the cafeteria, on a given Sunday in December. Santa was there giving candy canes<br />

to the children <strong>of</strong> alumnae along with cookies and punch being <strong>of</strong>fered to all. After that date you would fi nd a multitude <strong>of</strong> boxes <strong>of</strong> wrapped gifts in all the hallways<br />

<strong>of</strong> the school.<br />

Sometime in the 1980’s the Christmas Project stopped being handled by the school and a former graduate, Marcella Budzik Zemski ’50, took over to a lesser degree.<br />

She handled it out <strong>of</strong> her home on Dundalk Avenue. For about 30 years she helped other alumnae and their immediate families who needed a hand at Christmas time.<br />

As long as donated funds and gifts allowed, help was also given to individuals/families that were recommended by alumnae. Unfortunately, Marcella passed away in<br />

December <strong>of</strong> 2008.<br />

My granddaughter, Suzanne Remeikis ’08, and I took over the TCHS Alumnae Christmas Project last year. Ronnie Annarino ’56 was kind enough to <strong>of</strong>fer to make the<br />

contact phone calls. Some alumnae give money, some shop for gifts, and others give gift cards. Last year we were able to give gifts to 15 <strong>of</strong> our own graduates, along<br />

with 87 children and 54 low income seniors. If you know <strong>of</strong> someone who needs help, you can contact me with the necessary information. <strong>The</strong> name and information,<br />

which will be held in confi dence. If you can afford to help support the project, we can use donations <strong>of</strong> money, gifts, and gift cards. I can be reached at 410-284-1520,<br />

’68 Mary Jane Norris received the fi rst Recognition Award<br />

presented by the <strong>Baltimore</strong> Custom Brokers and Forwarders<br />

Association Board on October 15, 2010. Mary Jane is a Manager<br />

for Port Operations for the Maryland Port Administration (MPA)<br />

and has been with the company for 28 years. She sits on the board<br />

and is a past president <strong>of</strong> the Women’s Traffi c and Transportation<br />

Club and the Council <strong>of</strong> the Supply Chain Management<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. Mary Jane is also a member <strong>of</strong> the advisory boards<br />

for the Anne Arundel County and Cecil County Community<br />

Colleges Transportation programs, and for the International<br />

Business Program for Elizabethtown College.<br />

’89 Renee Payne Hammond announces the birth <strong>of</strong> her son,<br />

Bentley Owen Hammond, on November 18, 2010. Renee and<br />

her husband, Michael, were married in October <strong>of</strong> 2009.<br />
