Humanitarian migration activities also include the provision of emergency assistance to<br />

persons affected by conflict and post-conflict situations. IOM has participated in virtually<br />

every emergency involving large scale movement of people since it was founded in 1951.<br />

IOM offers its services to vulnerable populations in need of evacuation, resettlement<br />

or return. While such services are often urgent and vital in the initial phases of an<br />

emergency, they may become even more relevant during the critical transition from<br />

emergency humanitarian relief, through a period of rehabilitation, to longer-term<br />

reconstruction and development efforts. In recent years, the international community<br />

has also come to look to IOM increasingly to assist in the return home and reintegration<br />

of demobilized soldiers or police officials.
