Dear KMTA Colleagues,
I have always appreciated everything our KMTA
Officers and Board members have done for us, but I
had never experienced first-hand the complications
and difficulties of accomplishing those things until
this first year of my presidency! I owe a great debt
of gratitude to all who have served before, and to all
who are “on board” with us, now.
I’ve seen the passion and dedication of our MTNA
staff and officers, as well, through some difficult
times this year--beginning with the announced cuts
of the instrumental competitions and ending with
their restoration. I’ve learned how
responsive our MTNA leadership is to
all concerns, and I’ve experienced first
hand their passion for our Association,
and their wise counsel.
Through the state presidents’
discussions of the events in MTNA, I
gathered and recorded some great ideas
that we may want to try, in addition to
the gems already developed by our
Kansas colleagues that provide us such
wide-ranging musical experiences for
our students!
In the KMTA Honors Auditions, David Tauscher
has done a marvelous job in creating a friendly
atmosphere, so much so that any student can play
memorized music from pedagogical sources all the
way through high school! Students can even play
non-memorized solo music and duets in two of the
plans. There is something for every Kansas student
in the Fall Auditions: from the serious competitor to
the hobbyist--the most significant something being
great encouragement!
The other gem of an event is our Music
Progressions, which has been lauded by the state of
Washington as quite a bargain-purchase! Theirs is
an association with the second-highest number of
members in the country, and they use our materials
for 1,300 students! They love Music Progressions!
At our state conference, Christy Williams, Janet
Johnson, Jennifer Fink, and Wendy Stevens
“sold” us on the merit of our KMTA events while
giving us innovative and motivational ways to
teach musicianship through the materials and
methods they’ve each created for student
preparation. You can read about their amazing
ideas and links in the conference details in this
issue.
And, of course, as you all heard, we got to
experience our newest gem at our conference: our
first-ever KMTA concerto competition! Our
young concerto winners played so beautifully that
we were all charmed and
delighted beyond our
expectations of this inaugural
event! Thanks to Leroy
DuBois’ excellent
photography, and his creation
of our own Facebook page (just
type in Kansas Music Teachers
Association), we can re-live
that concert and other
wonderful moments of our
conference!
As we’ve begun our
eNewsflash, and LeRoy has
entered us into the Facebook world, many of us
are increasingly using electronic communications-
-whether email, text, Twitter, Facebook or Skype.
As our vocabulary, as well as our world, is
changing daily, we can learn to take advantage of
today’s communication-tools to help connect us
with our colleagues across our state, our students,
and those with whom we can share the benefits
and rewards of being KMTA members. I hope
you’ll join our efforts to connect with each other
and gladly say “Yes!” to working together, as
MTNA says, for a more musical tomorrow!
With hope for a great crescendo of
communication, support and inspiration,
Sally Buxton,
President,KMTA
Next Board Meeting is Saturday, October 13 th at 1p at All Saints Orthodox Christian Church in Salina.
Julie@JewelsofTravel.com
We had some wonderful Association reports at the Luncheon on Saturday at the KMTA State Conference. It
was good to meet some of you after sharing emails back and forth. At the June 8 th meeting of the KMTA
Board, it was decided to keep the Grant Funds at $2000 for the coming school year, 2012-2013.
The KMTA Association Grant application form is available on the KMTA
website and is due to me by August 31 st . The amount each Local Association
shall receive will be decided at the fall KMTA Board Meeting. The number of
students and teachers involved plays a big part in the amount of the loan.
Also remember that the Grant report form (also online) is due to me within 30
days of the completion of the project. Please note that eligibility for a grant is
based on 100% MTNA-affiliation of all members in your association.
11 Reasons to attend the State Conference
1. New-to-you information—e.g. Pianos are not covered by your
home owner’s policy if you teach on them! --Betty Todd Smith
(Check with your insurance company.)
2. New words to use—“coaching” a duet team, being “directional”
with your comments to duet partners--Christy Williams
3. Meeting and catching the enthusiasm of a new “key player” in
KMTA leadership—Janet Johnson, the new Music Progressions
Chairperson. Her students must earn the right to be invited to
participate in Music Progressions! --not “I have to do MP,” but “I
get to do MP.”
4. New incentives—Janet Johnson frames the MP. certificates (Dollar
Store frames) and presents them (at a recital?). She also gives
ribbons for each level, even trophies for certain high scores.
5. 78 FREE theory resources, rhythm and listening games and
activities, all coordinated with Music Progressions levels—Jennifer
Fink (Visit her website, pianimation.com & search for KMTA.)
6. An intro to the advanced level which follows Rhythm Menagerie,
due out this fall--Wendy Stevens
7. Not one, but two concerts this year by outstanding musicians,
both professional and student winners
8. A radical approach (for many of us) to technique (flatter fingers,
no thumb tucking on scales)--worth serious consideration for
reasons given by Fred Karpoff
9. New and reviewed business practices—stop giving makeup lessons,
how to set reasonable rates, correcting 5 false narratives (e.g. #3-
“I’m just a piano teacher.” Truth: I’m teaching a highly
professional skill and need to value it as such.) and more—Wendy
Stevens
10. Best ideas shared by attendees--1 st place: Street performances in
Lawrence on a keyboard powered by car battery! 2 nd place: field
trip to learn about the piano, 3 rd place: Sightreading challenge—
parents matched their student’s efforts. Money went to a related
non-profit—Envision
11. Develop a deeper friendship with one or more colleagues ☺
IMTF LUNCHEON DISCUSSION
KMTA Conference: June 8, 2012
Baker University, Baldwin City, KS
Our 2012 KMTA Conference opened with a wonderful luncheon on the Baker University Campus! Over 50
participants gathered to renew acquaintances, meet new colleagues, and discuss various aspects of teaching
music as an independent teacher. After a little “scrambling” for seating, a variety of topics were discussed at
13 different tables. The following are some of the main ideas shared:
Studio Business
1. Do you include your administrative time when setting student tuition, or do you just charge for actual contact
time with the student? Most do not charge an administrative fee or ever considered charging one.
2. What do you do about delinquent payments? What is your policy on making up missed lessons?
Most do not have a problem with delinquent payments or charge a penalty fee. Teachers require a 24-hour
notice for a missed lesson. No notice – student still pays. Some do teach make-up lessons. Many have
discontinued make-up lessons and offer swaps or a group lesson instead.
3. How do you organize your student payments? By the lesson, month, quarter, semester, or year?
Teachers charge a semester or monthly tuition – not per lesson.
Training
1. What training opportunities/conventions/conferences have you taken advantage of in the past that you would
recommend to other teachers? KMEA in February in Wichita; KMTA State Conference
2. Do you go to national/state conventions? How often? KMTA State Conference: some go annually; several
others were attending for the 1 st time
3. What do you find of most value in attending these events? Meeting people with things in common; gaining
new ideas; brainstorming to solve problems encountered in teaching
4. What prohibits you from attending? National Conference comes the week after spring break – poor timing.
Others do not attend due to cost and inability to find a roommate to share costs.
5. What online resources for training and ideas do you utilize? MusicTechTeacher.com; Pianimation.com
(Jennifer Fink’s site); pno-ped1.com; ComposeCreate.com (Wendy Stevens’ site); YouTube for listening;
Pandora for listening; Grooveshark.com for listening; Piano Teachers Around the World (PNO.PED-L.com)
6. Do you schedule time to practice and increase your own skill level? How important is this to your teaching?
Most practice, but do not schedule it in regularly. It is important to all.
7. What professional publications do you find to be of most value to you? Clavier; Music in Motion catalog
(www.musicmotion.com)
Personal Administrative Considerations
1. Do you need private health/life insurance? If so, where have you found it? 2 had private insurance; 1 used an
employer insurance.
2. Do you use any MTNA’s insurance of any kind? If it were affordable, it would be great. No one carried the
MTNA insurance who participated in this discussion.
3. Do you have a financial planner/tax consultant whom you would recommend to other teachers? Do you do
your own taxes? Do you itemize and use the home office deductions? What deductions do you use that others
might not have thought about? Some used a CPA; other did their own taxes using Quicken or TaxAct.
Everyone itemized and used the home office deduction. Deduct costs for teaching supplies, landscaping for
safety, office and maintenance supplies (especially for bathroom and cleaning), piano costs, etc.
4. What kind of liability insurance do you have for your studio? Does your homeowner insurance company know
that you run a business out of your home? How does this affect your insurance coverage? Only one in group
carried extra liability insurance above that with the regular homeowners’ policy. Teachers should check their
policies – many insurance companies will exclude pianos, teaching supplies, etc. if not specifically listed on
their homeowner’s policy as being used for business purposes.
ksmta.org 10

Personal Administration Considerations – liability insurance continued
If teachers see over 10 “clients” per week in their home, many insurance companies will REQUIRE a business
policy to be purchased.
5. Have you had any zoning problems with having your business in your home? No one in the discussion group
had obtained any permits to work out of their homes. Zoning issues can be problematic, but no one had
encountered a problem of any kind.
6. How do you deal with other members of your family finding your students intrusive into the home life?
One used a gate to section off the studio portion. Husbands can be especially impacted, and most indicated
that there had been some problems in this area.
Ensemble and Music Collaboration
1. Do you teach accompanying or provide accompanying opportunities for your students? Teachers said that it
depends entirely on individual situations.
2. Do you consistently teach duets/duos/trios? Most do not do it regularly, but do occasionally use them.
Teachers find it to be a very good tool.
3. Since piano is considered the “lonely” instrument, do you think that more ensemble opportunities would
encourage students to stay with piano longer? It depends on the individual student and the various situations
of rehearsal scheduling, community/regional situations.
4. Would you like to see KMTA sponsor more collaborative events for students? If so, what specifically would
you like to participate in? Teachers liked the multi-keyboard events currently being done.
Performances/Adjudication Events
1. What would you most like to see from a judge’s critique after an event? LOTS of comments! Fill the page!
Specific comments and suggestions for improvement – especially if the piece is to be performed again. Also,
comments for the benefit of the teacher to learn more about the piece and its execution.
2. What comments would you NEVER like to see again that a judge has made? Vague generalities. Be specific
and tell how to execute the place in the music to which the judge is referring. Don’t ask “WHY did you…..?”!
3. Do you have recommendations for judges for KMTA events? Avoid undue harshness! Keep comments ageappropriate!
Be specific about improvement and positive.
4. What other types of performing/audition opportunities would you like to see available through KMTA? Local
recitals. Regional scholarships for summer music camps. More ensemble/string/woodwind, etc. and jazz
5. How do you get students to think beyond “notes and rhythm” and play real music in performances?
Recordings; research the piece; create images; movement; using terms from art and imagery
6. What aids do you teach students who have difficulty memorizing music? Advanced planning and analysis is
important; clap and move to the next section
7. What has been your best technique in dealing with stage fright? Building confidence with many different piano
performance experiences.
Motivation
1. What do you believe motivates students? When they sound good!
2. How do you encourage students to strive to play the more advanced literature when it seems so difficult that
they are “turned-off” rather than challenged? Listening to others’ recitals.
3. What part does listening to CDs and attending concerts have in your studio? Teachers use listening in every
lesson and also YouTube.
4. Do you use awards; stickers, trophies, or the MTNA awards program and certificates? Why or why not? One
teacher used to, but doesn’t do it any more. Some give stickers for passing songs, practicing 30 minutes. For
rewards, some use dollar bills, candy, or stickers.
5. Do you involve the parents to encourage their children at home? How do you do this? Email – complimentary
emails!
6. How do you keep yourself motivated without burnout? Coffee! Studio themes, thinking creatively, new ideas.
7. What are some of your best “motivational” pieces of sheet music? “Cross-Current” by Cooper; jazz version
of Pachelbel Canon (it’s in C); “Poet’s Lament” (unsure of composer)
11 ksmta.org

Repertoire, Theory and Technique
1. What are your favorite classical repertoire collections? Masterworks Classics (Bigler/Watts); Piano
Literature by Alfred or Bastien; Celebration Series by Lynn Freeman Olson; Suzuki series, Applause,
Bastien Repertoire Level 1-4; Encore; Keith Snell
2. Do you teach music history/appreciation? Do you have a special way for students to learn about
composers, time periods of music, and musical styles? Teach music history piece by piece. Set goals of
Music History with Music Progressions and Guild Auditions. Pieces used for auditions stimulate history
conversations. Use group lessons. Purchase subscriptions to Piano Explorer for each student.
3. What method/guide do you use to teach theory? Do you use theory games? Which ones are your
favorites? Finneys in Seattle; Pattern-Play; Music Mind Games; TCW; Lesson books; Theory Olympics;
Faber theory; Marlais Succeeding at the Piano theory; Computer theory games (“The Mouse”); Theory
Time books
4. Do you teach composition? What are your resources for doing this? Robert Pace book; work with
students on their own. None of the teachers at one discussion table taught composition in any way.
5. Do you have your students write out their own compositions or hand-copy music to obtain the skill of
writing on the staff? Do you consider this an important skill? Why or why not? With multiple children,
sit at the table and write out notes from a reading book. Some use technology: Tenuto; Paradis website;
Skitch-ipad. Most believe that the skill is important, but do not work on it because not enough time in
lesson. One person assigned a student performing at a church the task of transposing a solo from bass to
treble for the clarinet.
6. What technical studies or composer etudes do you use for advanced students? Hanon Studies (include
rhythmic variations for advanced students); Marco Takjevic; Faber technic; Music Progressions and
Guild required technic; Urtext Songs from the Mir Island; scale books (FJH) is especially good; Maurice
Hinson/Valerie Cisler Keyboard Choreography; Isidor Phillip studies.
7. How do you teach the student to find a relaxed playing position? What do you do for a low wrist? How
do you build finger strength? Use Alexander Technique principles with students. For low wrist – put
something under the wrist. Would really like to hear more people’s solution to this issue! When doing
scales, the wrist position is imperative, which requires a higher wrist position. At the beginning of the
Faber books, use a tabletop to drill finger independence. Use arm weight to “bed the keys”.
KMTA-Capitol Federal Honors Auditions
The Honors Auditions were created to allow any student to participate. Music students of any age level,
experience are eligible to participate. Even though the event is a competition, the Honors Auditions are
specifically designed to be a positive learning experience for all students who enter them.
2012 Information
Pre-College - November 10, 2012 (Postmark deadline - October 15, 2012)
Collegiate - November 11, 2012 (Postmark deadline - October 22, 2012)
Washburn University, Topeka
We are into the thirteenth year for the KMTA Capitol Federal Honors Auditions. KMTA offers this audition
program in the fall for music students wishing to perform for a judge in a competitive setting. Students gain
so much by being a part of a group that shares their interest. Listening to other student auditions and being a
part of a larger musical community, including parents, teachers, students and other arts supporters makes all
of their diligent work worth the effort.
Changes made to the KMTA Competitions:
The board has approved to suspend the KMTA Pre-College Woodwinds, Brass, Vocal and Percussion
competitions and the KMTA Collegiate Woodwinds, Brass, Vocal, Strings and Percussion competitions.
Competitions will only be available for pre-college and collegiate piano and pre-college strings.
Teachers are required to help with the auditions. A few hours working as a door monitors, check-in, and
recording is needed. There is a place on Form B (Teacher Application for State Honors Auditions) to list the
time you would be available to help out. District Auditions need help too. On Form A (District Auditions
Enrollment Application) there is a place to indicate when you would be available to help for that as well.
Encourage your students to participate! Teachers can enroll students with the enrollment Form A. Payment
must be mailed. Please be in touch with me if you have any questions and I look forward to seeing you in
Topeka!
Minutes of Kansas Music Teachers Association
Spring Board Meeting
June 8, 2012
Baker University
Present: LeRoy Dubois, Leona Dickman, Brett Janssen, Betty Smith, Karen McClellan, Mara Balke, Nancy
Blockcolsky, Linda Featherston, Mary Smith, Natalie Wickham, Julie Watson, Lisa McCluer, Reena
Natenberg, Sally Buxton, Cheryl Metcalf, Shirley Wiebe, Lori Supine, Pat Ziegelmeier
The meeting was called to order by Sally Buxton, President, at 9:15 a.m.
Karen McClellan moved that we adopt the agenda. Motion was seconded by Linda Featherson, and it
passed.
Linda Featherston moved that the minutes be approved as printed. Cheryl Metcalf seconded the motion, and
it carried.
President Buxton shared a printed report of various aspects of her work as president.
Pat Ziegelmeier, executive secretary, presented complete financial reports. Nancy Blockcolsky moved that
the reports be approved as presented. Julie Watson seconded the motion, and it carried.
Nancy Blockcolsky, immediate past president, reported on her attendance at the presidents’ meeting at the
2012 MTNA Conference, and reports were given from various KMTA vice-presidents as well as Mara
Balke, District I President. Vice-President of Associations, LeRoy Dubois, suggested a college connection
page be added to our website.
Advisory Chair Reports: Cheryl Metcalf, Local Associations Chair, listed the local associations and the
grants given this past year. Julie Watson, Update editor, asked for an assistant with the Update and said
newsletter information should be to her by June 15 th . Linda Featherston, Fundraising Strategist, shared costs
for ads and links in our KMTA publications. She also suggested soliciting donations for KMTA through
the Power of One. Lisa McCluer, Power of One Chair, will pursue uses for the funds in our Power of One
account. Reena Natenberg, Outstanding Teacher & Service Awards Chair, reported that there were no
nominees for the awards this year. Lori Supinie, business liaison, made several suggestions regarding future
conferences for KMTA.
In new business, conference scheduling was discussed. President Sally Buxton asked for volunteers to work
on a committee to develop new conference ideas and a conference handbook. Linda Featherston, Lori
Supine, Karen McClellan, and Julie Watson volunteered. Other board members should tell her if they want
to help on it. Local associations and colleges need to let Sally know of their events, to avoid conflicts in
scheduling. She also called for a committee to review KMTA Board job descriptions.
Concerning LeRoy’s proposal, Julie Watson moved that we create a connection page for colleges on our
KMTA website. Nancy Blockcolsky seconded the motion, and it passed. LeRoy will head the project.
After discussion about the need for a membership directory, Julie Watson moved that in the teachers area of
our website we add a membership directory, our by-laws, and general membership information. Nancy
Blockcolsky seconded the motion, and it carried.
The possibility of having to pay for use of facilities for fall auditions was discussed. Linda Featherston
moved that we pay for facility rental for activities at the discretion of each activity’s chair and in
consultation with KMTA. Julie seconded the motion, and it passed.
In discussion on local association grants, Julie Watson moved that we add $1,000 to the $2,000 allocated
for grants last year. Linda Featherston seconded the motion. There were objections to the motion because
of the possibility of having to pay for facility use. Therefore, the motion failed. Local association grants
will be limited to a total of $2,000 for the coming year.
In other business, Nancy Blockcolsky moved that Music Progressions fees be standardized with a $20 fee
for participants in each level. Cheryl Metcalf seconded the motion, and it passed.
Shirley Wiebe, KMTA-KMEA liaison, brought up concerns about the KMEA Keyboard sessions.
Suggestions would be welcome.
After President Buxton made several announcements and asked board members to let her know about
possibilities for a fall board meeting date, Nancy Blockcolsky moved that the meeting be adjourned. Cheryl
Metcalf seconded the motion, and it passed.
