Emmy
1984 graduate Gary Pahler won an Emmy
Award last season for his weekly KET television
program, “Louisville Life.” After graduating
from U of L, Gary worked as a
Videographer/Editor for AdCraft, Inc.
He traveled the country putting together a
video golf magazine program for the PGA,
highlighting some of the best courses in
America. Then in 1991, his affiliation with PBS
began with Louisville’s Channel 15, where he
eventually became Production Manager. When
Channel 15 closed in 1997, KET purchased
their assets and Gary was retained as a
Producer/Director, a position he enjoys most
because of its story telling opportunities.
Premiering in 1999, Gary’s KET program,
“Mixed Media,” Kentucky's only weekly
television arts series, featured more than 225
programs. “Mixed Media” helped promote
nearly 500 Kentucky performance and visual
artists, as well as arts organizations.
Gary’s most recent project, though, is
“Louisville Life.” Each week, this Emmy
Award winning video magazine program
spotlights Louisville’s finest people and
places. Gary hopes to inspire viewers to get
out and experience these stories first hand
and meet the people and places that make
this city so unique. The program is
broadcast Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m. and
Sundays at 12 noon (both on KET2).
Gary is also a drummer, currently performing
in two eclectic ensembles, which range from
the jazz, rock and world music of Ut Gret, to
the west african inspired dance music of The
Ohun Afrobeat Band. He credits Mr. Kroh’s
senior English class for helping him “think
outside the box” and Mr. Zehnder’s
freshman guitar class for inspiring a lifelong
love of playing music.
Ken Falk:
Keeping
Country Safe
& Secure
The oft-used
phrase “under
the radar”
happens to be
particularly apt
in the case of
Ken Falk ’79.
For most of his
career, from Special Agent in the Air Force
Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) to
his current position of Transportation
Security Specialist, Transportation Security
Administration (TSA), Department of
Homeland Security (DHS), Ken has been
operating out of sight of potential
enemies of the United States to collect
intelligence, provide threat assessments,
and conduct surveillance and
countersurveillance activities.
Ken’s position has him involved with
background and security clearance of
individuals who work within the United
States multi-modal (marine, land, aviation)
transportation infrastructure. For obvious
reasons, the details of his work assignments
are guarded. In general terms, however,
Ken’s work provides one facet of the
“layered security” that TSA utilizes in its
mission to protect the nation’s
transportation system while facilitating the
movement of people and commerce.
A career highlight for Ken came in 1997,
when he was selected as one of ten Special
Agents to establish the elite AFOSI
Antiterrorism Special Team, which provides
rapid, global support to the deployed theater
commander by conducting specialized
tactical counterintelligence, antiterrorism,
and force protection operations in high
threat, high risk areas. His extraordinary
service in Albania earned him the Bronze
Star and his citation mentions, among other
notable duty, gathering “crucial data
indicating the imminent assassination
attempt of a senior U.S. official,” and
“facilitat[ing] the move of that official into
protective custody…”
Ken lists Brother John Wills as a mentor,
and credits St. X with providing the
educational foundation, discipline, and critical
writing skills that have been cornerstones of
his career in the Air Force, and now with TSA.
Ken resides in Colorado Springs.
O Brother
Where Art Thou?
The Stinson-
Wolz Connection
Have you ever been asked, “Do you have an
older brother, because you remind me of
someone who looks just like you?” Well,
Damon Stinson ’93 heard that from time
to time, even from his art teacher at St. X,
Mrs. Bowman. The response was always
“no” since Damon was the oldest in his
family, followed by Josh ’99 and Annie.
But in 2007, Damon learned Mrs. Bowman’s
intuition was right. She had taught his
older, biological brother Lenny Wolz ’88,a
spitting image of Damon and Josh.
At birth, Lenny was placed with an adoptive
family through Catholic Charities by his
mother and father who were still in high
school. The couple
later married and had
two sons and a
daughter. After years
of never telling the
children of the
adoption, Mrs.
Stinson began her
search to find out
if her first-born
was safe. About
the same time,
Lenny began
searching for
his biological
parents. With the help of online
resources, the two were matched and
prayers were answered.
Lenny, Josh and Damon share similar looks
and personality traits, which made it that
much easier to come together. Lenny
attended St. Barnabas, while Josh and
Damon went to Holy Name. All three were
art students of Mrs. Bowman. Looking back,
the brothers were only a few years and
neighborhoods apart, but they shared similar
qualities and the common bond of St. X.
On The Record
with Joe Duerr
Whether it’s lying
on our coffee
table, study, or
entry hall mail,
seeing The Record
around the house
has given us an
abiding feeling of
home. The Greater Louisville Catholic
community has enjoyed the weekly Record
for years thanks in no small part to the
efforts of Joseph Duerr ’57. Joe is in his
40th year at The Record and has been the
Editor and General Manager since 1985.
Starting his journalistic career with a good
old type writer, Joe has witnessed many
changes at the Record.
After graduation from St. X, Joe received his
undergraduate degree from Bellarmine
University in 1961, then went on to earn his
masters degree in journalism at the Medill
School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
Joe also has a masters degree in political
science from the University of Louisville.
Under Principal Br. Thomas More Page,
C.F.X. on Broadway, Joe has good memories
of St. X and of all the brothers who were
“excellent teachers.” He and his wife,
Patricia, have been married for 40 years.
They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
Margaret
Howell
Receives
Paulie Walsh
Service Award
Annually, Saint Xavier presents the Paulie
Walsh ’63 Service Award to an individual or
group who embodies the true spirit of
volunteerism for their “behind-the-scenes”
efforts and true devotion to the young men
of St. X. At the recent Volunteer
Appreciation Reception, Margaret Howell
was named the 2008 recipient of this award.
A volunteer since 1987 when her son,
Bobby, enrolled at St. X, Margaret has been
an active volunteer with the Office of
Advancement and the School Administrative
Office. She has helped with Xtravaganza,
Phonathon, proctoring classrooms, and been
an active member of the Tiger Boosters,
serving on their Board since 2000.
Margaret’s love for St. X is evident in the
tremendous amount of time she spends at
Tiger activities.
Coaching
Changes
Three prominent Tiger head coaches and
St. X graduates have hung up their whistles
after a combined 90 years of service. The
replacements for the basketball and
swimming and diving programs are both
St. X graduates. The school is searching for a
new golf coach.
Joe Bergamini ’73 was at the helm of the
basketball program for 23 seasons.
He compiled a 338-285 record that included
a 7th Region championship in 1995.
Throughout his career, that also included
coaching baseball, he instructed a number
of athletes that went on to play Division I
college hoops, with Scott Padgett ’94
being the most prominent. In March, Kevin
Klein ’95 was named Bergamini’s successor
after spending the past two seasons as
Waggener’s head
coach. Klein
received 7th
Region Coach of
the Year honors
after finishing
the season 22-6.
Marty O’Toole ’57 is perhaps the
winningist coach in KHSAA swimming
history. After 22 seasons, he retires with 20
consecutive state championships. Marty was
a three-time high school All-American as a
St. X student swimmer and captured seven
individual state titles from 1954 to 1957.
He has coached dozens of All-Americans
that not only swam for Division I colleges,
but in the Junior Olympics, as well. Mike
O’Toole ’93, a four-year letterman in high
school and St. X assistant swimming coach
for more than a decade, was named his
father’s replacement in late April. Mike has
been instrumental in the instruction of St. X
student athletes and in team assignments
for major meets over the last several years.
After 45 years, Marty Donlon ’56 has
retired as the head golf coach. He led the
Tigers to 18 KHSAA State Championships and
nine State
Runner-up
finishes, along
with 24
Regional titles.
He has been
named National
Coach of the
Year three times
and was inducted into the National High
School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of
Fame in 1996. Additionally, he is a member
of the Bellarmine University Hall of Fame,
the St. X Alumni Hall of Honors, the Metro
Area Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, and the
Dawahares/ KHSAA Hall of Fame. Marty is
the founder and director of the Kentucky
High School Golf All-State program and has
served as the KHSAA Regional Tournament
Director for 44 years.
is a true student-athlete and consummate
teammate. An outstanding hitter, Kal bats
lead-off for the Tigers while playing both
First Base and Outfield. In 2007 his
performance was recognized with All-District
and All-Region honors, and a spot on the
West All-Star team for Kentucky high school
juniors last summer. He has continued his
all-star form this spring while helping the
Tigers win 17 of their first 20 games. Kal
hopes to continue his baseball career in
college next season, but not before helping
the team return to Lexington for the KHSAA
State Tournament.
Senior Netter
Daniel Westhoff ’08 is one of only two
seniors to return from the Tiger tennis
team’s 2007 State Championship squad.
A four year member of the team, he is a
perfect example of a player who has
continued to improve each year through
effort and determination. As the season
draws to a close, he is one
of several Tigers who are battling for a spot
in the regional line-up. With a 3.7 GPA in
the Honors Program, Daniel’s hard work is
also evident in the classroom where his
teachers recognize his leadership abilities
just as his coaches do on the court.
Super Vaulter
John Nunnelley ’08 is the latest in a long
line of outstanding St. X pole-vaulters. In
the past decade, seven different Tiger
vaulters have finished in the top four at the
KHSAA state meet. Included in this run are
three state champions, Chris Daniel (1997),
David McKenzie (2000) and Chip Heuser
(2001, 2002, and 2003). One of the top
students in his class with a 3.9 GPA and the
recent recipient of the prestigious Xaverian
Award, John looks forward to joining the list
of vaulters to clear 13’ at the state meet in
late May at the University of Louisville.
Coach Josh Mullin calls Dylan O’Loughlin
’08 his team’s hardest worker. Having
played four years on the St. X volleyball
team, he served as captain of the 2008
squad. As the starting setter for the second
consecutive season, Dylan is the floor general
who runs the offense and provides the
opportunities for the Tiger hitters to earn
their kills. He has
been outstanding throughout the season and
has been instrumental in both Tiger victories
over the Trinity Shamrocks this spring.
While Kent Taylor’s dreams of
becoming a professional
basketball player were
shattered in 1986 when he was cut from St.
X’s freshman basketball team, his love and
admiration of sports remained strong.
featured in news broadcasts ranging the
band of the sports spectrum, from coverage
of the 2005 Men’s Basketball Final Four to
his annual post-Derby show with his wife,
WAVE news anchor Connie Leonard.
reminiscing about the intramural
championship his team won in 1989.
Also in 1986, the St. X football team claimed
a state championship over Boone County.
However, his initial experience with St. X
John, a 1963 graduate of St. X and a
was not as illustriously glorifying. Merely
days before his freshman year, his parents Kindred
sports,” he says, remembering his valiant attempt
with his friends to sneak a radio into class,
hoping to keep track of U of L’s progression
member of the 1962 state championship
basketball team. Taylor reminisces how
Brother John Wills, as his Calculus teacher
WAVE 3 anchors Caton Bredar and Kent Taylor
at the Kentucky Derby Pill Pull.
With such a resumé concentrated in the field
dropped him off at a supposedly preplanned
debate team meeting, coordinated
by current St. X English teacher Deborah
Healthcare
CFO to Speak
through the NCAA basketball tournament.
at St. X, “instilled in him an admiration of of news broadcasting, Taylor was hired by
Cheek. Still, as a cliché lost and confused
Now the lead sports anchor for local news
station WAVE 3, Taylor makes a living using
his knowledge about sports.
A resident of the
Highlands, he
has been
enthusiasm.” He also remembers the
determination and diligence he harvested
from Bill Ballard, his German teacher, and
Mike Glaser ’70, who taught him English.
This diligence and
enthusiasm carried
Taylor to new levels
after St. X. Taylor
attended Miami
(Ohio) University,
and as an English
Journalism major,
he wrote for a
majority of athletic
teams at the
university. He
continued his passion
WAVE-TV in August 2000. He worked
primarily as a photographer and producer
before becoming the 11-o’clock sports
anchor in 2002. Four years later, he became
the 6-o’clock sports anchor as well. In early
2008, he was named Kentucky TV
Sportscaster of the Year by the Associated
Press, and a fellow St. X grad, Drew
Deener ’91, finished second. Taylor’s
sports coverage has extended to all parts of
the country, from the Brickyard 400 in 2001
to UK’s national championship win in 1996,
and even three weeks in Salt Lake City for
the 2002 Winter Olympics.
With such a varied and dynamic approach
to sports, Taylor also uses his journalistic
knowledge on a daily basis, writing
freshman, Taylor wandered aimlessly around
the campus, failing to ever find the debate
team meeting.
Still, Taylor’s St. X experience was one of
memorable pride and brotherhood. The
connection he established with numerous
friends in high school allowed him to
prosper and maintain a dynamic attitude in
his post-St. X experiences. As a result, Kent
Taylor absorbed the Xaverian values of trust,
zeal, simplicity, humility, and compassion
during his time at St. X and continues to use
these in his experiences with sports and
with the world at large.
