SHODAIR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Welcome
From the Administrator
Fall is definitely in the air in Montana:
Kids are back in school, football has started, and our
inpatient programs are getting busier. As we prepare
for winter, we always think about how fortunate we
are in this beautiful part of the country to have four
distinct seasons. With fall upon us, we can't help
but think about harvest time and give thanks for the
good spring and summer we had. It seems as if we
had enough moisture and sun just at the right time.
The fire season wasn't as bad as recent years, and
the heat of last July was tempered this year.
Each September, the Board of Trustees holds its
annual meeting to appoint Board officers and
confirm Board actions of the previous year. As we
begin another corporate year, on behalf of the
Board, our staff, and patients, I want to express
sincere thanks for all of the support Shodair
Children's Hospital has received. Whether it
involves support through patient referrals,
volunteering for our Children's Miracle Network
broadcast, or offering financial assistance, all of it is
deeply appreciated and plays a critical role in the
overall mission of the hospital. Montanans have
supported our cause for over 112 years and we
couldn't serve our patients without their help.
Over the years, our inpatient programs have
changed from an orphan's home with an adoption
program, to a crippled children's hospital, to an
acute care hospital with a chemical dependency
program, to our present facility -- an acute care
psychiatric program for children and adolescents
Each year, we evaluate where we've been and
how we can improve our services. Program
development is a continuous evolution; we are
forever striving to improve patient care. We are
in our 32nd year of providing medical genetic
services to the entire state through a partnership
with the Montana Department of Public Health
and Human Services. It is through this
partnership that our latest innovative program,
the follow-up of newborn screening (NBS),
was developed.
As Thanksgiving draws near and the New Year
approaches, we are starting to think about the
upcoming legislative session and how fortunate
we've been to have the unwavering support of
the Legislature over these many years. There's a
synergy that's created by the various supporters of
Shodair that has allowed us to establish our long
legacy of quality medical care to all Montanans.
On behalf of all of us here at Shodair, I thank
our generous supporters and wish each of you a
happy, healthy holiday season.
Sincerely,
John P. Casey

Guardians
of Hope
by Celeste Sinton, MD
2 Reunion
It was the week before Christmas
and all through the hospital, children were singing
“Silent Night,” but refusing to settle in their beds.
Like most of the twenty boys and girls who lived in
the hospital unit, Jimmy, small for his fourteen years
with lively freckles and a mop of Santa-suit-red
hair, knew he was going exactly nowhere on
Christmas Day—no visitors, no house, no visions
of sugarplums. Jimmy’s father had unexpectedly
terminated all parental rights a month before, and his
mother hadn’t been heard from in over six years.
There was not much left to dream about.
I met Jimmy three months earlier, shortly after he had
been taken from his home when authorities learned
of the neglect and abuse that he had long suffered
from his father. The clash between the reality of his
father’s abandonment and the belief in his parents’
love for him produced great storms of emotion
within Jimmy; his reactions were violent and
wildly uncontrollable.
During those pre-holiday December weeks, he
plunged into serious depression, while our treatment
team searched in vain for a home or family to take
him in. Jimmy moped around the hospital like a lost
puppy, intermittently turning into a raging tiger. At
those times, he would pound his fists into his head,
scratch his face and arms and anyone who came
near him, or throw himself into walls and doors.
Jimmy fought hard not to lose both the hope of being
loved by his family and the dream of belonging.
Sometimes, he would have to be physically
restrained by the mental health techs and nurses to
keep him from hurting himself further. After these
bursts of angry energy, he would sink to the floor,
exhausted and sobbing. Perhaps that is why the
news of his father hit him so hard at the time of year
when we can’t help but see bright illusions for sale
in every shop window and in every television
advertisement, and everyone wants to buy them.
The gift that Jimmy wanted most would not be under
the tree this year. I sat with him, listening, often
alarmed, wondering how he would survive the
disillusionment of his parents’ abandonment.
Autumn 2008
On the evening before Christmas, I walked through
the electronically-locked doors onto the unit. All
of the children were gathered together, sitting on
the sofas, for their last community meeting of the
week. Then, I noticed one child was missing.
From the opposite side of the unit, away from the
other children, I heard the distinctive sounds of
sobbing and wailing. I followed the sounds to the
furthest padded seclusion room. The heavy door
with its double bolts stood open, and in one corner
huddled a body heaving with emotion.
Without a word, I lowered myself to sit, not too
close, leaning against the door jam, motherly
instincts mingling with professional judgment.
My plan was to wait silently, but my mind raced to
find the right thing to say or do. No sooner had
I stretched my legs out in front of me than it
happened: Quicker than a snowflake melts on a
hot stove and before I had time to react, one wet
face was buried in my right shoulder, one tousled
wreath of hair was tucked under my chin, and one
small arm tried to squeeze inside the doorframe to
encircle my back. Without a thought, my right arm
enfolded Jimmy as he leaned wearily against my
side. He stopped crying then, and we sat, silent
and still, as though it were the last hour before
Christmas morning.
At Shodair Children’s Hospital, not all the
Christmas stories are happy ones. Children come
to us on the verge of hopelessness, fighting to stay
alive in a world where they feel no sense of place
or belonging. We offer these children hope without
promises; optimism without false reassurance;
understanding without pity; compassion without
judgment. It is in these circumstances that our
greatest skill is to cradle precious hope for each
child, nurturing and sustaining it, until he or she is
ready to look forward to a new year.
High-tech
protection
By Joe Menden - Helena Independent Record
(Reprinted with permission)
Shortly after Jill Twardosky gave birth
to her son Derek in 2004, she started seeing signs
something wasn’t right.
The Hamilton woman watched as her son developed
chronic lung infections. He was so small, he was off
the growth charts, even though he ate normally. Doctor
after doctor couldn’t explain Derek’s frequent illnesses
and inability to grow.
After eight months of lung problems and growth issues,
Twardosky finally discovered Derek had cystic fibrosis,
a hereditary disease of the lungs’ mucus glands, liver,
pancreas and intestines. It’s a disease that causes
progressive failure of bodily systems — but one that
with a specially tailored diet can be controlled to allow
a normal life and dramatically improve life expectancy.
Until this year, Montana did not routinely screen for
cystic fibrosis in newborns. In fact, the state performed
newborn screening for only six conditions, the lowest
number of screenings of any state at the time.
But in the 2007 session, the Montana Legislature
changed that, passing a measure that requires screening
for 29 conditions, including hearing—bringing the state
up to the standards recommended by the March of
Dimes and the American Association of Pediatrics.
Twardosky was among those who testified before the
Legislature on behalf of the bill.
Most of the other 27 genetic conditions Montana
screens for can cause brain damage, severe mental
retardation, or death. If caught in time, all can be
controlled and consequences prevented or lessened
by means of specialized diets and other treatments.
The screening, overseen by the Department of Public
Health and Human Services, also includes a long-term
follow up program administered by Helena’s Shodair
Children Hospital.
According to Jo Anne Walsh Dotson, family and
community health bureau chief for DPHHS, that
follow up — which makes sure children diagnosed
4
with a genetic condition get the specialized care they
need—helped bring the state from being one of the
nation’s worst to one of its best in terms of newborn
screening.
“They thought things through pretty well,” Dotson said.
Individually, each condition is rare — occurring in
frequencies ranging from one in 3,000 babies to fewer
than one in 100,000.
Through August, dozens of cases had already been
detected, including three cystic fibrosis cases, two of
which probably wouldn’t have been caught under the
previous screening system, Dotson said.
Out of 8,000 babies screened, there were 156 initial
positive testings. Of those, about two-thirds were found
to be false positives.
One of the positive readings found was an exceptionally
rare condition resulting from an inability to metabolize
fatty acids. Dotson referred to it as a “one-in-a-million”
case.
Linda Beischel, newborn screening coordinator at
DPHHS, said, “For many of these conditions, the first
symptom can be death. Irreversible brain damage or
death,” she said. “These folks (with proper treatment)
can have absolutely normal intelligence.”
The surge in recent years in increased routine screening
is due to a relatively new technology called tandem
mass spectronomy. Montana performs many of the
screenings at the DPHHS laboratory in Helena. The
state contracts with the Wisconsin state laboratory for
the tandem mass spectrometry tests.
Beischel said there is now a big push to screen for
more conditions, and some states screen for more than
the 29 recommended by the American Academy of
Pediatricians and the American College of Medical
Genetics. Mississippi, for instance, has 40 conditions
it routinely screens for.
Beischel said a number of criteria are used to determine
what new screenings become standard. They must have
Reunion
a good test that doesn’t result in a lot of false positives,
be able to be treated in some way, and be screened for
in a cost-effective way.
The model is based on the first routine genetic test, for
phenylketonuria, or PKU, which causes severe mental
retardation unless a strict diet is followed.
Montana first began screening for PKU in 1973, at which
time it also began treating for hypothyroidism, which
causes a severe form of retardation called cretinism.
According to Dr. John Johnson, director of medical
genetics at Shodair, those conditions have been all but
eliminated in the United States, thanks to treatment. He
said that the same will be probably be true for many of
the new conditions being screened for.
Families were able to screen their children for the
additional conditions in the past, according to Dotson.
About 40 percent to 60 percent of families were getting
the screening, she said.
But many families were
unaware they had the option.
And for those who did get
screened, it was left up to
individual families and
doctors to make sure the
proper care was given.
“We didn’t know about
them,” Dotson said.
That was troubling, she
said, because some of the
conditions are so rare, most physicians have never even
heard of them, let alone know how to treat them.
State Sen. Mike Cooney of Helena requested Senate Bill
162 in the 2007 Legislature. He said that having sat on
a task force on newborn screening, he knew how far
behind the curve Montana was.
Helena’s Shodair Children’s Hospital was among the
proponents of the bill.
Ellen Livers, director of management services at Shodair,
said screening was being applied differently in different
communities, which was a big motivation for
Shodair’s involvement.
“There really was a sense that there wasn’t consistent
care,” Livers said. “That was where we came up with the
concept of the long-term followup.”
Autumn 2008
Anne Seliskar is the care coordinator of Shodair’s
followup program.
She said Shodair’s role is to assist primary doctors in
obtaining patients’ diagnosis and to monitor the
treatment’s effectiveness.
“We know it’s effective,” Seliskar said. “We know it
works.”
Joan Reichert, metabolic nutritionist with Shodair, said
most of the conditions screened for require the babies to
get special medical formulas. Reichert works with the
doctors to make sure patients are getting the proper
formulas on a regular basis.
“If they get the proper formula, they can develop
normally,” Reichert said.
Four years after Derek Twardosky was diagnosed
with cystic fibrosis, his mom says, you wouldn’t know
anything was ever wrong with him. Derek is still small,
but he’s back in the range of
normal. He’s no longer
sickly. He runs and plays
just like any normal child.
Derek still faces an uncertain
future. Many with the
disease die in their 20s and
30s, but with improved
treatments, babies born
today can expect to live into
their 40s or 50s and beyond.
Jill doesn’t like to think about
Derek’s life expectancy, however. She focuses instead on
what her family can do from week to week to enjoy life.
She said that everywhere she goes, she sees happy
mothers with their new babies — just like she was after
Derek was born. It used to send a shiver down her spine
to think that some of those families could wind up going
through the same ordeal hers did.
But now she is glad she could play a role in getting
the legislation passed, allowing some peace of mind.
“I’m thrilled,” she said. “These babies are being
protected from the health issues that Derek went
through.”
Spotlight on Giving –
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Question:
How do I leave a lasting legacy to help Shodair Children’s Hospital?
Answer:
There are many ways to leave a lasting legacy, with the easiest being a
bequest or provision in a will or estate plan that allocates all or part of an
individual’s estate to Shodair Children’s Hospital.
Question:
How do you add this bequest or provision to a will?
Answer:
A sample provision may look something like this:
"I give, devise and bequeath [identify here a specific sum of money,
percentage or a specific asset] to Montana Children's Foundation, a
non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization located at 2755 Colonial
Drive, PO Box 5539, Helena, MT 59604, to be used for its general
purposes in support of Shodair Children’s Hospital [or identify a specific
purpose or area at Shodair Children’s Hospital, if desired]."
Question:
Are there any other ways I can leave a lasting legacy?
Answer:
Absolutely. Contact the Shodair Children’s Hospital Foundation today at
(406) 444-7548 for free, easy to understand information on charitable trusts,
charitable gift annuities, life estates, or gifts of life insurance.
Successful 2008 telethon
supports critical services to
Montana children
The 2008 Shodair/Children’s
Miracle Network telethon once again
proved that generous people all across Montana want
to make a difference in the lives of children.
On Saturday, May 31, an array of Montana businesses
and individuals made miracles happen for children
and families all across the state. They did so by
donating funds, time, goods, and services for Shodair
Children’s Hospital’s 2008 telethon broadcast. With
phone banks manned by volunteers from businesses
and organizations in Helena and elsewhere, the
hospital launched its annual day-long fundraising
event to benefit Montana children. The event was
broadcast live from Shodair on Montana Television
Network / CBS affiliates around the state.
“These people make it possible for the hospital to
offer critically needed psychiatric care and cutting
edge medical genetics services to children and
families,” said Anastasia Burton, Shodair’s Marketing
and Community Relations Director. “We really
couldn’t do all that we do without their support.”
Shodair’s telethon was part of the international
Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Celebration
broadcast that aired May 30 through June 1. The
21-hour television special, live from Walt Disney
World, is broadcast each year over a network of
some 200 television stations in the United States,
Canada, and Mexico. It is the signature
fundraising event for Children’s Miracle Network
hospitals across the U.S. and Canada. Shodair is
Montana’s only Children’s Miracle Network
hospital and, as a non-profit facility, depends on
donations like those raised during the telethon to
continue offering its services.
During the day-long broadcast, viewers all over
Montana heard inspiring stories from individuals
and business representatives, who took the
microphone to talk about their reasons for
supporting the hospital and Children’s Miracle
Network. Many donors and Children’s Miracle
Network corporate sponsors came from locations
around the state to personally present their
contributions and work the phone banks
throughout the day and evening. Staff members
from Shodair’s psychiatry and medical genetics
departments were also on hand to offer additional
information about services available to families.
Eleven year-old Addy Scher
was on hand to talk with
donors, volunteers, and
on-air personalities. She
“worked” the phone bank,
and the phones always
seemed to ring when she
was on stage. Scher is a medical genetics patient,
and was Montana’s representative in the 2008
Champions Across America program, attending at
events in Orlando, Florida and Washington D.C.
14 Reunion
Miss Montana, Kristen Mantooth, and Miss Rodeo
Montana, Audrey Sholty, joined the telethon to
talk with hosts about their enthusiasm for
Children’s Miracle Network and Shodair, and
answered phones throughout the day. The Miss
Montana program, through its association with
the Miss America organization, supports Shodair
and Children’s Miracle Network fundraising
efforts. The Miss America organization has
selected Children’s Miracle Network as its
national platform.
The telethon is made possible by the efforts of
hospital staff and volunteers who graciously
contribute their time to make the event possible.
Local businesses donate food to feed the small
army, whose members arrive early on the
morning of the telethon and work until 1:00 a.m.
Television hosts represented markets across the
state and included broadcast personalities from
Helena, Missoula, Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls,
and Glendive.
Prepare
Patients
for Success
By Pep Jewell
Director of
Education
School is a significant part of a child's life. For some
young people, school is a stressor. This article is meant to provide some insight
into how Shodair Children's Hospital provides its patients with an education
along with treatment during their stay with us.
At Shodair, our goal is to provide each student with an education which takes
into consideration the factors that resulted in the child's admission to our
facility. School at Shodair is accredited by the Northwest Association of
Accredited Schools; many people are surprised to learn that we offer instruction
year-round at the hospital. This allows students an opportunity to work in
academic areas as needed or to make up missed credits. Our students receive
recreation and music therapy, as well as visits twice a month by therapy dogs.
School on the Acute Unit
School on the Acute Unit at Shodair is a non-traditional alternative learning
environment. Activities are designed for children from ages three to seventeen,
all in one setting. Children need to develop specific skills in order to meet
school behavior expectations, function socially in school, and be a learner in
the school setting. Toward that end, students participate in academic activities
designed to promote social skills, language skills, executive skills, cognitive
skills, and emotion regulation.
The activities are hands-on and group based. At Shodair, we emphasize handson
learning to promote a positive school outlook, so our students can develop
social and emotional skills for success upon return to their communities.
School work can be provided by parents or guardians at any time for their
children, so they don't fall behind in their home school during their admission
to Shodair. Homework can be completed during our school blocks with help
from a teacher, in their rooms at their own leisure, or at other times during the
day when a teacher
is available.
A Harvest of Hope
For the past ten years, the children at
Shodair participate in preparing and planting an
organic garden located on the hospital's grounds.
As part of their recreation therapy groups, they
help maintain and harvest the garden's bounty.
The garden features some permanent beds where
the children grow rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries,
asparagus, and flowers. This year saw the
addition of an apple tree and a cherry tree.
Shodair recreation therapist Lynette Presley,
who coordinates garden activities, says, “The
children are given information about plants,
insects, and harvesting as we work together in a
group. The staff at Shodair help support the garden
by bringing in grass clippings we use as mulch.
School on the Children's Unit
The children's unit has two full-time special education teachers and one
teaching assistant to meet the children's educational needs. Each child's
academic abilities are assessed, unless similar testing has been administered
within the previous year. Our students are provided individualized educational
tasks to best meet their educational needs.
Shodair educators are responsible for contacting each child's previous school
every two weeks to keep the school administration updated on the child's
progress. Receiving schools are also encouraged to attend other educational
meetings that may be scheduled while the child is in Shodair: Child Study
Team meetings, Individualized Education Program meetings, and Treatment Team
meetings. When the student is ready to discharge, Shodair's education staff
arranges an exit review conference with the child's multidisciplinary team to
ensure the most positive transition possible for each child into a public
school setting.
School on the Adolescent Units
Shodair middle school and high school residential units have two classrooms
per unit, with two certified special education teachers and a teacher's assistant.
Students are tested to identify their educational needs. After assessment, students
are provided materials to meet their needs, as well as continue to earn credit for
school. Our students use computer assisted instruction for a variety of subject
areas and other instructional materials at their ability and interest level.
Shodair teachers contact the student's home school twice a month, as well as the
student's parent or guardian to provide information about the student's progress.
Our instructors hold meetings to update and review important educational plans
for students, such as the Individual Educational Plan and the Child Study Team.
Teachers participate in monthly treatment teams to provide information on the
student's progress. Shodair instructors also coordinate an exit review conference
near the end of the student's stay with the school and other providers who need
to be aware of how to help the student transition to school outside of Shodair.
They also buy vegetables from the children at the
end of the summer, which helps provide funds for
next year's garden.”
Many of the children have never grown
vegetables and state how much they like doing so,
especially since they get to eat most of what they
grow. Some of the children reminisce about
gardening with their parents or grandparents. The
children are encouraged to ask questions and to
share what they know about gardening. The
end of season harvest sale is a good exercise in
marketing, as the children design posters and
vegetables that are their favorites and often tell
stories about their gardening escapades.”
A few years ago, a small greenhouse was added to
the garden to help extend the growing season, as
adds, “The children seem to benefit from having
the opportunity to grow food and flowers, and
often say they are going to start a garden when
they go back home.”
Shodair earns JCAHO
gold seal of accreditation
once again
Shodair Children’s Hospital is proud
to announce that its psychiatric program once
again earned praises and the gold seal of approval
for quality health care—literally. In August, the
hospital passed an exhaustive inspection and was
awarded accreditation by the Joint Commission
on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
following a comprehensive three-day survey of the
hospital’s psychiatric facilities, care, and services.
Joint Commission accreditation confirms that the
hospital has demonstrated a high level of quality in
care and services offered to patients. Accreditation
is awarded for a three-year period, and is indicated
by a gold seal specifying
national quality
approval. The survey
included critical, indepth
reviews of both
records and policies
related to care, as well
as interviews of patients
and staff members.
“We’re happy to have once again demonstrated
our commitment to quality care,” said Shodair
Administrator Jack Casey. “Achieving Joint
Commission accreditation for our psychiatric
programs is an important part of confirming the
expectations of patients and their families for
safety and quality care.”
The Joint Commission evaluates nearly 17,000
health care organizations and programs in the
United States. Founded in 1951, it is an
independent, not-for-profit organization, and
the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting
and accrediting body in health care.
Shodair Soccer Classic thrills fans for ninth year;
spotlights Montana's top student soccer stars
A summertime favorite, the Shodair
Soccer Classic, presented by Wal-Mart, once again
thrilled Montana soccer fans on July 26 at Carroll
College's Nelson Stadium. In its ninth season, the
highly-competitive event began with the kick-off
for the women's game at 5:00 p.m.,
followed by the men's game at 7:00 p.m.
The stands were filled with enthusiastic
fans out in force to enjoy the action on
the warm evening.
The teams carried Red (East) and White
(West) monikers again this year, reflecting
the color of their uniforms. The women's
teams battled to a final score of 5-0 in favor of Team
Red. The men's game ended with a score of 3-1,
also in favor of Team Red. In the women's game,
C.M. Russell's Erin Craig scored two goals, followed
by another from Jessica Leslie of Billings West. With
nearly seven minutes remaining, Billings Senior's
Kendra Emmet scored a goal, followed a few
minutes later by another, courtesy of fellow Billings
Senior graduate Tate Ellison, for the final score. On
the men's side, Helena High graduate Justin Maes
started the scoring early in the game. The action
continued with Mitch Glint of Stevensville scoring
another goal, giving the
East a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Late in the game,
the West team began to
rally when Big Sky's Lane
Hamilton scored a goal to
draw the game close.
The East prevailed,
however, with the final
goal scored by Helena
Capital's Nick Shaw.
The annual Soccer Classic
features top student
athletes from high schools all across the state.
Through a rigorous screening process, 60
outstanding young men and women are selected to
20
participate each year. In addition to having been
selected as All-State and All-Conference high
school players in Class AA or A, they must have
demonstrated academic achievement, leadership,
and citizenship. Several of the selected players
received athletic scholarships to continue
their soccer careers this fall at major
colleges and universities across the country.
A talented coaching staff from around the
state was on hand to guide the teams.
Many have winning records in state
tournaments, and their skills helped assure
top-level competition. Coaches for the
men's teams included: O'Brian Byrd, (Whitefish)
Team West coach, and Carl Straub, (Helena High)
Team East coach. Women's Team East coaches
were Erika Cannon (Bozeman), and Rich Brauss
(Belgrade) assistant coach; the women's Team West
was coached by Lini Reading (Whitefish), and
Matt Barrett (Big Sky) assistant coach.
Players and coaches arrived at Carroll College on
July 23 to begin practices and a variety of other
teambuilding and leadership activities leading up to
the games. They visited Shodair and met physicians,
medical genetics staff, nursing staff, and other
personnel, for an overview
of the important work
they help support by
participating in the Classic.
On Friday before the
game, the recentlygraduated
high school
players hosted nearly 100
aspiring soccer all-stars in
a free clinic for children
age 5 to 12. That evening,
they were honored at a
banquet which included
event sponsors, coaches, parents, and friends.
The Classic is a labor of love for a group of
hard-working volunteers and hospital employees.
Reunion
A small army of people contributed their time,
effort, and enthusiasm to plan, coordinate, and
execute a busy four-day event that included
feeding, housing, and entertaining coaches and
players from around Montana. It's no small feat,
and the Shodair staff was again grateful for the
added expertise and assistance. “We couldn't
make this happen without the help of our
generous volunteers and sponsors,” said Shodair
Administrator Jack Casey. “We appreciate their
commitment of time and resources to make this a
great event once again for Shodair.” Clearly, both
the players and the coaches look forward to
helping support Shodair's mission. After the game,
Coach Carl Straub said, “Shodair Hospital is a
great organization to support, and I know these
players will go far in life.”
The Classic is a benefit for Shodair Children's
Hospital and the services it provides for Montana's
youth—in particular, psychiatric services for
seriously emotionally disturbed children and
adolescents. Last year, the hospital provided more
than $4 million dollars in uncompensated care for
at-risk children and youth from around the state.
Support generated from events like the Soccer
Classic and the Children's Miracle Network
Telethon help ensure that these services remain
available for those in need.
Shodair Children's Hospital would like to thank
the businesses, organizations, and individuals who
donated time, money, services, and goods to make
this year's Shodair Soccer Classic a success.
Their support makes the event possible and
demonstrates their commitment to the well-being
of Montana's youth and communities.
Thanks to all our generous
Classic supporters.
2008 Miracle Treat Day
helps Shodair children
one Blizzard at a time
Once again, Dairy Queen stores all
over Montana participated in Miracle Treat Day on
August 7 to benefit the children and programs
at Shodair Children’s Hospital. With 100% of the
proceeds of Blizzard sales going to benefit Shodair,
the event was a big success. Not only did the 2008
annual Miracle Treat Day help Shodair’s children
one Blizzard at a time, but in many cases, several
Blizzards at a time. Through
generous community supporters,
the efforts of numerous volunteers,
and the astounding participation
of Dairy Queen owners and staff
across Montana, this year’s Miracle Treat Day
did not disappoint.
Miracle Treat Day generates not only excitement and
fun, but also community pride and some healthy
competition. During this year’s event, Republican
gubernatorial candidate Roy Brown spent the day in
Forsyth making Blizzards for the community. Dairy
Queen operators in Great Falls aired Miracle Treat
Day radio advertisements, which resulted in an
overwhelming customer response. Employees in
Bigfork challenged themselves to a friendly
competition to see who could sell the most
Children’s Miracle Network balloons, and they sold
every one of them. Participating Dairy Queens
across Montana had similar stories to share.
The owner of Helena’s Dairy Queen Prospect
Avenue location, Chiko Olson, a longtime
supporter of Shodair, said simply, “It’s all about the
kids.” In the last year, more than $24,000 of the
proceeds generated by Miracle Treat Day have
gone to benefit Shodair Children’s Hospital.
Shodair Administrator Jack Casey said, “Shodair
sincerely appreciates the involvement of all this
year’s participating Dairy Queen locations, as well as
our friends across Montana who supported us once
again by buying Blizzards on Miracle Treat Day.”
Golfers tee up for children!
Each year two golf tournaments bring golfers together to support Shodair and the
important services the hospital provides for troubled children. The Big Sky Open, held each year in
Colorado, and the annual COSTCO Golf Scramble in Missoula contribute to Shodair's ongoing ability
to provide critically needed services to Montana families and youth.
COSTCO Scramble
The annual COSTCO Scramble brings Shodair
supporters out in force. This year, 31 teams of four
took to the course at the Ranch Club (formerly
Phantom Hills) to support the hospital. Prizes donated
by more than 75 businesses and 90 hole sponsors
contributed to an exciting, enjoyable event for
everyone in May. COSTCO
representative Amy Hanser
said, “We really enjoy
putting this event together,
and many of our sponsors
have been donating to this
great cause for years; in fact,
75% of our hole and prize
sponsors this year were
returning contributors.”
The 2008 winners were
the team from Karl Tyler
Chevrolet. In addition to
Hanser, COSTCO employees
LaDonna Trimbo and Ida
Bell are instrumental in
planning and executing a
spectacular event that brings
sponsors and golfers back year after year. This
year’s event was another success, raising over
$10,000 for Shodair.
COSTCO Wholesale is a Children’s Miracle Network
(CMN) sponsor; its warehouses in Montana raise
funds for Shodair by selling the red and yellow CMN
balloon icons and participate in other events and
promotions throughout the year.
Thank you!
Big Sky Open
In its eleventh season, the annual Colorado
tournament brings former Montana residents and
others together for a good cause and a good time.
The 2008 Big Sky Open brought over 100 golf
enthusiasts and Shodair supporters together in
Thornton, Colorado at the Thorn Creek Golf Club
in August. The event raised
$6,500 to help children
and adolescents in
Shodair’s psychiatric
treatment program.
The tournament began in
1998 as an opportunity to
support worthy non-profit
organizations. Shodair was
named as the beneficiary in
1999, and has held the
coveted spot ever since. The
popular annual competition
draws golfers from around the
region, often with a waiting
list of would-be participants.
The committee responsible
for the event is composed of alumni from the
University of Montana and Montana State
University. Recalling the fiery gridiron competition
between the two institutions, the creative alums
decided to organize a challenge on the golf course.
The Big Sky Open tournament features alumni and
supporters from both schools, and has brought
sponsors and golfers with Montana ties to the tee-off
in Colorado every year.
SHODAIR
SPOTLIGHT
Eva Clark, RN
A lot has changed at Shodair since
Eva Clark, RN, reported to work on May 4, 1978.
In addition to the physical location of the hospital,
its mission has changed from medical and surgical
care for pediatric patients to its present day focus
on genetics and psychiatric care for children and
adolescents. Eva says, “My job changed
dramatically in 1986 after acute care pediatrics
closed and Shodair switched its mission. I’d always
had an interest in psychiatry and psychology, so it
was a good change for me.”
Over the past 30 years, Eva has worked at Shodair
as a charge nurse, a unit manager, and finally as Staff
Education/Infection Control Coordinator. In her
current position, Eva is responsible for a variety of
duties pertaining to Shodair’s employees. She is one
of the first people at Shodair that new employees
meet, as Eva orients new staff for their jobs on the
Acute and Residential units, teaches staff about
infection control techniques, and conducts their
tuberculosis screens. Her infection control efforts
at Shodair extend to the nursing, dietary and housekeeping
departments, as well as tracking patient and
employee illnesses; then notifying the county health
department of all reportable illnesses.
Eva also enjoys the mentoring aspect of her job,
which includes conducting the initial orientation
with nursing students from Carroll College and the
University of Montana - Helena College of
Technology who come to Shodair for rotations or
simply a day of observation. She also works with
several colleges to arrange student internships at
Shodair for a variety of fields, including genetic
counseling, pharmacy, and social work.
Autumn 2008
As you can imagine, keeping hospital staff current
on competencies takes a lot of planning on Eva’s
part. In addition to coordinating annual training
for Shodair’s nursing staff, Eva plans an annual
hospital-wide in-service and coordinates
mandatory classes, including those in CPR,
cultural diversity, and aquatic safety.
While her duties at Shodair have changed over
the years, Eva’s love of children, which drew
her to work here, has remained steadfast. Eva’s
favorite thing about working at Shodair is its
people; she also enjoys the challenges that have
come with the many changes here over the years.
“It keeps things interesting,” Eva notes. “It’s our
way of progressing and improving.”
A Helena resident since 1974, Eva enjoys going
to rookie league baseball games, reading, and
traveling to Washington, Oregon and Kentucky
to see her children and grandchildren.
A Tale Tale of Two Two Sisters Sisters
The year was 1919, and sisters Zelma Jean and June Hartley were students at
Lincoln Grade School in Hamilton, Montana. Born in Hamilton, the sisters were like most
other children at the time, with one important exception. As the world-wide Spanish flu
pandemic of 1918-1919 continued, June’s third grade teacher received an important letter
and package from the Montana Children’s Home and Hospital (now Shodair Children’s
Hospital) in Helena asking Hamilton students to raise funds to help provide medical care
24 Reunion
for children in the hospital. The package contained
red paper hearts; students were encouraged to sell
the hearts locally for 10¢ each.
The sisters took their share of hearts home that
day to plan their fundraising. Their parents, who
also raised funds for the hospital through the
Freemasons and the Order of the Eastern Star,
were extremely supportive. They allowed their
girls to go forward with a very creative idea they
had for selling the hearts. Why sell the hearts for
only 10¢ when they could sell them for more and
thereby raise more to help the children? Over the
next several evenings, June and a friend visited
various pool halls in downtown Hamilton. The
girls were able to sell their hearts in the pool halls
for 25¢ each. At the end of the campaign, they
were the top fundraisers at Lincoln Grade School.
“We just love
to give!”
Zelma and June continued to raise funds for the
hospital even as they went off to college. Zelma
Jean graduated from the University of Washington
in 1929 and June graduated from the University of
Montana in 1933. Both sisters graduated with
Bachelor of Arts degrees in public school music
and taught hundreds of Montana children to love
of music. The sisters’ love of music and service
continues to this day: Zelma served as a choir
director for over 50 years, and June currently
serves as head organist at the Hamilton United
Methodist-American Baptist Church, a position
she has held since 1926.
Over the past 89 years, Zelma Jean and June have
continued to give faithfully to help Montana’s
children at Shodair Children’s Hospital. Where did
this spirit of giving come from? From their parents,
who believed it was important to help others and
instilled the joy of giving in their children. As Zelma
Jean and June both say, “We just love to give!”
Will you please join Zelma Jean and June this
holiday season in experiencing the joy of
giving? It’s easy to do, and the joy you feel by
helping children in need will last throughout
the New Year.
